  1. The shims on a YZF are located under the camshafts, which means you have to remove the air box, poss carbs & cam cover maybe the radiator to get even more roon to see.The exhaust does not have to be removed, you should`t need to have too much oil either as you only loose about 50cc of oil when cam cover removed. If they have just done some work on the bike & now it leaks oil you will need to go back and ask them to rectify the leak. When you accelerate hard it may be smoking as it is running a little rich. This maybe that there is some wear in the emulsion tubes in the carbs. The carbs are effectively laying on their side & when the slides move up & down the needles may wear the emulsion tubes (Oval) & let in extra fuel. Hope this helps a little, feel free to ask more questions, will help if I can

Try Granby Motors in Ilkeston (0115) 930 0020, you may be surprised at what they have in stock

I can`t say if it`s a definate bolt on but the engine is very similar. If that helps
  4. If your bike is running ok the CDI is working, otherwise substitute for a known working unit. Your bike doesn`t have an EXUP valve on it.
  5. It sounds like your charging system has failed. If I remember right your generator/alternator is located under the carbs. You may find that it is the regulator/rectifier ,which is in the generator unit, that has failed. It may be cheaper to replace with a complete second hand unit but check with your yamaha dealer for parts availability
  6. Yep, 18" rear tyres were the norm until the late 80`s. Bridgestones are good tyres,I used a pair of them until recently on my FZ in the same size as yours until I converted to 17". I got around 3000 miles out of the rear including two wet track sessions at Donington, very good feel. Try M&P, sometimes they have deals that you just can`t leave. I bought a pair of Metzlers for less than trade price.
  7. That would depend on how wide the wheel is,by runnig that size tyre i assume that you are running a wheel off a FZR1000 which is 4.5 inches wide, that would be the ideal size for that wheel. You can fit a 170 if you can get hold of one. If you are running a standard wheel 3.5 in wide that is far too big and would give major stability problems
  8. I`m gonna get real technical with you now, think biscuits. Ideally you will want a colour very similar to a rich tea biscuit that has been dunked in coffee,if you have a colour which is lighter than an undunked rich tea it`s runnig too weak,if you are heading up to a digestive or choccy digestive you are heading up the richer end, then if you have a triple chocolate cookie you are running far too rich,so moral is when carb tuning always put kettle on first grab you nearest box of family choice biccys & away you go.
  9. I have gone down this route with my FZ750,first using a 1000 genny wheel but wanted better choice so went 17". You could use a complete 1000 Exup rear end,not a difficult conversion,I used a rear wheel off a 600 thundercat. It uses the same sprocket mounting so no grief when changing them, you can use you original caliper but will need a different rear disc & caliper mounting bracket. If you buy all thundercat parts you can then adapt in different ways because anything you do will need adapting. If you need more help & I`ll do my best.
  10. You are right,it will be the exup valve causing you a prob. You could try pegging it open & taking it for a ride. Strip your valve out of the exhaust,be prepared for broken bolts though as there are a bit of swine. You will benefit massively from this, reassemble with loads of copper slip, replace both cables as your problem was probably the exup valve seizing up & the other is probably streched as well. Try granby in ilkeston 0115 9300020 they usually have them in stock, knowledgable guys in parts & the workshop manager is a top guy
