  1. Is it normal to resurface a brake rotor on a motorcycle? or do people just replace them because of how thin they are?
  2. Dude if you have to use the choke that makes there more fuel then air. Since you wont run without the choke, you're too lean. Go to a parts fiche for your bike and buy the STANDARD jets for the bike. Your local dealer should have them in stock as they are a generic part.

actually i had that hanging problem on my 78 xs 400 and i fixed it by lowering the idle screw, might be gummed fuel also, but it should idle at 1,100 when warmed up. also heres the air filters http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycl...sh-1981/o/m8262 you'll need two of number 11.

id check your valve clearances, excess noise from the camshaft can be caused by too much valve clearance. it's pretty easy to do.
  7. well a 250 has about 170 lbs of compression, and a 125 has about 120-140, so i'd say 150

  9. i found out my petcock doesnt work with the vaccum. You should try running your bike on prime, mine idles beautifully with it which means I am in dire need of a petcock rebuilt kit.

just check your valves. or tune your right cylinder. or get new plugs. the chances of your chain being loose is between 0 and 1.

you could get a uni filter, or pod filter, as long as you know how how many mm wide the carb opening is
  12. hahaha, just i have a lights on off switch on my 1978 xs 400 on the right handle bar cluster. And it only turns the bike lights on and off when the engine isn't running. Shouldn't it turn them on and off when it's running as well? Because they just stay on while running. pherhaps someone unplugged some connection in the headlight bucket? just curiousity really, and sorry I was tired when i typed this up before.

wouldn't painting an air cooled engine cause it to heat up faster and get hotter in general because it acts as an insulator.

yeah viragos are good man, 1999 youll easily get parts. but 350,000 KILOMETERS? if thats what you ment to say then you may have a record on your hands.
  15. same problem. im sick of it.
  16. a bike with a happy battery will always work better, try charging it.
  17. maybe you should get a bigger main jet as well? could be starved for fuel past 6k rpms with those modifications.
  18. i just swapped out the carbs with ones i got from ebay, which dont have adjusting screws and have fixed mixtures. Works perfectly, i'll keep the old carbs for parts.

You could have a blown head gasket
  20. Yeah the screws are on top of the carbs right against the engine. I'll do that... After getting another set of bloody plugs tomorrow. Thanks for the help I'd have never figured that out before I sold it out of frusteration. Also as far as air restriction I think it's fine because the air filters tubes and everything look great.
  21. my xs 400 with 4k miles is fouling plugs almost as soon as I put a new one in. I think the last new ones lasted 20 miles. I went through the carbs already 5 times. Last time I put in new stock size jets. I have turned the air screws out to where they are almost coming out. should i get leaner jets?

OHHHH it hooks up to the top of one of the intake manifolds, there should be a brass fitting for a tube like on the back of the petcock sticking stright up on top of one of them, in fact both of my mainfolds have one, we just sealed one so you might have to take the rubber piece off if they are sealed.

    do you use the choke
  24. jordanscycles replied to jebb's post in a topic in Yamaha Workshop
you might want to unplug any lights it has if youre running it without a battery, if its not that you got a bogus cdi/coil but id think it was the cdi.

yeah id check the compression, also did you time it with a metric feeler gauge, and do it by the book, you might want to try and redo the timing. also i'd get a new plug, but before that kick it over several times full throttle, then take BOTH plugs out and make sure they are wet with gas, if not your carbs need to be serviced as well.
