are there resistors on your LEDs? maybe the relay has them also so that the extra resistance will lower voltage enough to cause the symtoms you describe. I am not an electronics expert so don't take my suggestion as gospel!! drewpy

you need the registration number. If you haven't got one then you will have to reregister anyway. you need to contact the vjmc and they will help in obtaining an age related plate.

Cleaning chrome/stainless exhaust headers
I've since been told autosol was too abrasive so didn't try. I have managed to get 1 nos downpipe and 1 being rechromed as we speak. The nos ones have twin walls to stop blueing. Still looking for a right hand silencer, tried classic bike forum as well. only could offer 3n6 silencer which i already have 1U4 anyone?

never throw anything away, 6 months later and you will want it. I can tell you from experience on that one to turn the engine over, just use the fat black lead from the starter motor (or whatever that colour is) and ground another heavy duty lead from the negative on the battery. Take out the spark plugs first as it will be easier to do this with less compression. Also squirt a little oil down the bores to help lube the engine. I assume that you still have engine oil in the engine and that you are checking it over to make sure its not seized? dont leave the starter on for more than a few secs as it will burn out! I would put the engine on the floor, that way if it jumps, it won't fall off and crush you toes, or what ever is sticking out at the time!!!

Carb and Air Filter Question
There are plenty of spares around, and I would keep it stock as the carburation would be out and especially if you are restoring the bike. The pods do fit straight on the bike carbs, then you would need to change the jetting to compensate for the increased air flow. Fitting bs38's would lose tractability of the bike as you are losing the high airflow on the intake because your using larger carbs. Great if you are racing and keeping the bike in the 9k+ rev mark! BTW for spare carbs, the xs750/850's use the same carb but with differrent jets

have you checked out the batteryeliminator site http://bat-pac.com/compatibility/index.htm says you can with a large capacitor (that's what a bat-pac is) and if you google there's bound to be someone who has found a compatible one from Maplins cheaper!!

XS400 Model ID???
360's had drum brakes front and rear and I think 250's only sold in europe where they both had drum or disk options. the "cruisers" had rear drums along with 16" alloys at the rear. the reason I suggested to look at the casting, is that it is a straight forward swop to change the SOHC engines around. drewpy

XS400 Model ID???
thanks for the compliment! the lower front barrels are the bit where the last of the cooling fins are at the front, about 100mm above the oil filter housing. drewpy

Yep an early 77' bike as the wheels are not painted. They are 400D in USA and 400C in europe. the CC's should be cast into the lower front barrels 398cc (xs400), 249cc(xs250) or 358cc(xs360) drewpy

1979 XS 750
can't see that working!!! you need black as earth and the two more wires as each goes to the two filaments in the bulb. One for normal lamp the other brighter for brake lamp. you need an earth as the brackets are usually rubber mounted. open up the lense and check you have the correct bulb in. easy to check as you take out the bulb and it should have two brass contacts for each filament side. If it hasn't you can't use it for braking/tail lamp drewpy

trx850 cold starting problems
check battery terminals as cold cranking zaps juice for the ignition. warm engine has charged battery and hot oil so less resistance. try heating spark plugs to see if that makes a difference as petrol (gas) ignites easier when warmed. drewpy

1979 XS 750
If it is like my xs400 with a twin bulb rear lamp (UK spec)! you should have 2 x twin filament bulbs, Black is common ground Yellow is the brake light spliced into two for both bulbs Blue is taillamp with a double female bullet connector from the loom side. hope this helps Drewpy

1979 xs 400f oil leak
could be crankcase pressure building up due to worn bores. how does the oil come out of the breather tube, is it disconnected from the induction? BTW did you post this on another forum a while ago, as this sounds familliar?
