the original contacts are fine and do work. you need to keep them flat and unpitted and correctly gapped. as for timing, use a xenon timing lamp and adjust each conatct plate to dial in the timing. the "flash" will freeze the indicator situated under the left hand timing cover on the timing mark. It does sound like carbs though, and they will either be gunged up with stale perol or may need balancing or float levels wrong. this has been discussed at length in other threads, feel free to do a search for them and to the forum
  3. should look on german ebay as they are very popular there. I occasionaly visit xs400 with google translator on and there are loads of info there. just get your head round the pidgeon english translation. called the 12e model

keeping the flat track project going I've drilled, thread locked and wired my disk onto the rear wheel. Are these tensioned enough. I did pull on them hard and seeing as I used thread lock as well thought it should pass an MOT inspection!! what do you think?

thanx for the reply JM I would n't know where to start with ally. I would have to buy the gear for a start!! I may make a tank mock up and then get someone to make the tank up. This is a long term project at least for this year as I have the other bike to play on. Having said that I do need to start thinking about doing it hence this post.

10w is unusually low for indicators, is this a haynes manual by any chance? 21W is the norm or you could go LED and use an LED control flasher

SOHC xs400's are tubed tyres but you can use tubeless tyres with tubes in them. I can't recommend anything other than BT45's they are the best, Merv will confer with me as they also suit the RD's. I use them on my xs and can say they rock. I used them at wombwell kart track and they never kicked out even when grinding the footrests. drewps

3 speedo cables went to the pub. they waited outside and 1 went in to be served. " 3 pints of bitter please" said the 1st speedo cable. "your a speedo cable aren't you?" said the barkeep "yes" said the 1st speedo cable. " get out, I don't serve speedo cables" said the barkeep the 2nd went in and the same happened to him. when he went outside to the other speedo cables, the 3rd one said wait here and rubbed his cable all over the road till it frayed and for good measure turned himself inside out into a knot. " 3 pints of bitter please" said the 3rd speedo cable. "your a speedo cable aren't you?" said the barkeep " no said the 3rd speedo cable, I'm a frayed knot" wa wa waaaaaaa!!!! to the madhouse
