very interesting, looking forward to see how this turns out. also try the www.xs400.com site as the bike shares everything with the 400 except carbs head and barrel in the sohc range. I have a rewire how to on there too!

Matt, you can't ask for copies/pdf's of Haynes. The internet Gestapo is tolling for these key words, hence I have taken that out. the yam service manual is very good and should tell you everything for maintenance. Keep looking and yes, sounds just like faulty clutch cable

thought the bike was mint condition? dented tank and seized engine doesn't sound like mint to me soaking the engine pistons would be the only way to go, diesel's the cheapest option

good project, I think Merv will be back on here and extiling the virtures and vices of the aircooled rd club of which I frequent. You would get a lot more advice from there. not sure of the model you have, but the brakes are the same as the xs range from 250 to 1100. If you have a bracket on the left hand fork stantion you could use SR500 brakes which are left handed. The wheels normally come pre-drilled to take another disk. even better, I think the aprillia rs125 fits and has stonking brakes on them (they fit the xs400 frames of which the rd uses the same headstock bearings)
