  1. hi everyone. i'm getting my bike ready for its MOT due at the end of november, the horn switch on the left handlebar is long gone and the previous owner has replaced it with a big ugly button half way down the left handlebar which is a pain in the ass to reach when i'm angry. is there a replacement available to replace the original or would i have to buy whole new switchgear? - Steve
  2. oh... er... well, after sitting in the workshop for a few minutes with a craft knife i finally thought "to hell with it" and cut the throat bit off the front of the air box, the K&N filter popped on a treat. i took it for a spin up the road and performance was sh*te to say the least, then i remembered i left the choke on, after that it was great. the bike now has a deeper, growling exhaust note and the power is instant when you come on the throttle. all in all i'm quite happy with it. will do a plug chop to check the mixture is still okay but i think it is fine (bike was up-jetted a few sizes when the exhaust was put on and ever since it has been a bit rich and absolutely stinks the carpark out when idling) i think its been a success will possibly get a pic or two tomorrow
  3. just thinking if i need to put the airbox back on it would be a bit tricky to reconstruct the front of it
  4. hi everyone. ive got a little high-performance air filter for my Yamaha DT50MX to help it breathe a bit better, to mount it i would need to remove the airbox to allow enough clearence to mount it onto the carb throat. but the original airbox also holds the battery and a few other bits and pieces and also forms part of the rear mudguard. so i can't remove it without extensive modification. i was thinking of putting a 90* rubber boot on the carb so that i could mount the filter sticking up between the carb and airbox, does anyone know where i can find such a device and would it cause major problems if i fitted it instead of just putting the filter straight onto the carb? (the carb throat is 30mm Outside Diameter and the filter is 30mm Inside diameter) alternatively, does anyone else know a good way of mounting the filter?
  5. i have sat on the 'blade in the driveway and for a little lad like me i've a job to hold it up once it's leaning over. but i absolutely love riding pillion on it, and just by hanging off the back of it i can tell its not a bike to be taken lightly... My DT has a DHG front fairing which does make it a bit nicer to ride at night but you still can't see very far infront of you. Busters Accessories sell a 6v/12v "Looney lamp" which is designed for this sort of bike, only problem is finding a place to mount it as my front fairing is too small and the mudguard is right underneath it heated grips are something i have thought of, but this is a 6v bike so it wouldnt really be possible and to prevent future clutch breakages, would these do the job? http://www.busters-accessories.co.uk/productinfo/BRGBK
  6. URGH... i've had my motorbike for just over 10 days and already i hate the government. im between jobs currently and can probably just about scrounge together the £15 for my tax and possibly another £20-£30 for my MOT in a few weeks, i dont see why something like my little chicken-chaser which produces less C02 than a fart should be taxed so much. £15 is alright, but £33 why?, just another excuse to screw the motorist ... f*ck you government, f*ck you...
  7. made my first mistake... left it parked on a gravel driveway and the sidestand sunk in and the bike fell over only damage was to the clutch lever, but i've ordered a new one off the internet (£4 cheap enough, the original had the end snapped off anyway so it was due for replacement ) also hav elearnt another major lesson... its freezing f*cking cold riding at night, and the lights on Yamaha DTs' suck big time
  8. i'd assume that most bikes of that model would use the same front wheels. not 100% sure though as i've no experiance with DT125s'. take a tape measure with you when you go looking for a new front wheel
  9. SAme here, DT Lights are AC powered from the engine wheras brake lights and indicators are powered from the battery, no doubt the same for your RXS. welcome to the madhouse, what size straite jacket do you want?
  10. Sorry, i can't help with the electrics, but i like the bike!, you've done a lot of good work best of luck
  11. failing that show him your' basement, that should scare him straight... (that is not a euphemism!) I for one am a fan of leather though...
  12. hi everyone, took my CBT today. started off with the basics, parcticing in a car park e.t.c and after a couple of hours i got out on the road with th einstructor, after a couple of hours we stopped for a burger king (as you do...) before continuing the test for another hour or so and ending up back at the Railway station where we had started. since then i've not been off my DT, first thing i did when i got home was get my insurance sorted (£225 Third party F&T with Swinton) and i am really enjoying this little bike... keep asking my dad to let me play with his CBR900 Urban Tiger but he is somewhat reluctant
  13. drop the sump plug out of it during the night (use a bucket and dont spill any) that ought to stop the bugger... failing that i second the idea of expanding foam, no doubt you already have the required black clothing for a midnight sabotage mission...
  14. i could work a bit of photoshop magic if you like, but we still need to find a way of printing them and distributing them in sticky form
  15. its around 13mm, wouldnt imagine its that much smaller. thanks for the advice, will give it a try at the weekend when i got some spare time
  16. erm, anyone got any ideas RE: the torque on the head bolts?. now have a head gasket so am just about ready to change it
  17. the bike had the engine completely rebuilt because the perosn that owned ti before the bloke i bought it from ran it out of oil and it seized. not sure what happened to the gasket though... will be sure to give it a good seeing to when its all stripped down though. the exhaust has only done about 5k as its an after market "BIgOne" (coupled with the correct expansion chamber.) btw, what tourque should i be using on the head bolts? i havent been able to find out
  18. i'd be best putting a new gasket on methink, the bike has done 22k so its bound to need replacing (the rest of it is almost pristine though). will log into ebay and get one when i get home. have had t take the seat and tank off to get to the head though
  19. it was advertised as a Dt50/125 fuel tank but no indication of what year :S
  20. I have that problem with my DT50, i think its normal, if the revs are up its not usually as bad (mine has a knackered battery anyway). check your battery with the engine running to make sure it is charging, then check it after leaving it to stand for a while to make sure it is holding its charge
  21. well i fired up my trusty thrusty yammy today and noticed it was blowing from the head. inspection with a torch revealed that there is a little leak around the seal of the head, so im assuming the gasket has been cooked or the head hasn't been tightened correctly (which would ruin the head gasket, no?) my nearest dealer is ProBike, and im not waiting another 3 weeks for them to get a head gasket in... took them 4 weeks to get me a sprocket, would rather mail-order from the 'net
  22. hi everyone where's the best (cheapest) place to get a head gasket for a Yamaha DT50MX (1990) or would it be possible to cut one out of gasket paper (if so what thickness gasket paper) - Steve
  23. hi everyone. bought this fuel tank for my Yamaha DT50MX but it doesn't seem to fit (it overhangs the frame too much and catches on the exhaust expansion chamber. the blue tank in the pic is the one from my DT50MX, maybe someone could help identify the black tank? im pretty sure its from a trials bike as it looks remotely like a Suzuki TS tank.
  24. Hi everyone. i want to change the gearbox oil in my DT50 MX (1990) but what oil should i use? thanks Steve
