  1. Hi, the setting is the points should just open (break) @ 1.8mm btdc. To measure 1.8mm you will need a dial guage & stand you can not get an accurate reading any other way, if the timming is incorrectly set you can suffer from either a hole in piston, no spark or general bad performance .... If you want to know the method on correct adjustment just ask ! Regards Jim
  2. Hi The colurs may be the same but perhaps do different jobs ... as bikes from the 21st centuary as out of my scope I was implying that the 2 cdi units are different ... so if we look at 1978 DT175 & 1981 DT175 the 2 cdi's were worlds apart & I just added that this could be true of later models also Regards Jim
  3. Hi, why did you change the CDI (were you after a different map ?). There is a chance that map of the fitted CDI is totally different to the original and the signals from the mag are sent up different wires (and or colours) to the CDI. It sounds like a return to std if you can Regards Jim
  4. Hi All, why does everyone want to get a quart out of a pint can ? I guess if you need to go faster & pull better the answer is to buy a bigger bike ... which will save you money on your current 125's (more money for the bigger bike) and have the little bike for lightweight fun ! Regards Jim

    old gits

well that is true of the old Vee twin ... I guess neither bike would make the trip !!! Regards Jim
  6. Hi Pete, you have 3 options ... 1) at the handle bar 2) at the other end of the cable 3) the push/pull rod. tbh I would get a new cc cover gasket & remove the r/h cc cover and adjust the push/pull rod and adjust it with the cable disconnected then reconnect the cable and adjust the cable slack to what is comfortable. At this point you could also check out the clutch for wear. As std the bike would not release the clutch until the lever is/was 3/4 of travel away from the h/bar so you may just have an over adjusted cable ! Regards Jim
  7. Hi, that will run like pooo and perhaps pushing it would be the best option Regards Jim

  9. Hi, no worries <dad mode on>read what is in front of you <dad mode off> Regards Jim
  10. Hi Barwell, most run like poo at 33 hp unless designed to have that power output all the extra weight & no power to pull it ! Regards Jim
  11. does that mean Pete has to get rid of his FZ 1000 ? ... I would guess the SR is just a traffic hack ! Regards Jim
  12. Hi John, it will just rattle on startup my own XS650 suffered from this noise and managed to cover about 4000 before I got around to doing it (that included a run from Worcter to Glasgow & back in 24 hours ! Regards Jim
  13. Hi Pete, I guess you are right !!!! the darker the better ! Regards Jim
  14. Hi John, I've had that one loads of times in the late 70's believe it or believe it not :- you need to fit a new cam chain. The first time I heard that noise it ended up with a factory tech guy visiting the dealership I worked in to asess this noise and it turned out to be the chain .... Replacing the chain is a pain in the butt as it's an engine out job but once you've done a few you can get it down to a couple of hours as long as the engine comes out of the frame easy and those damm exhaust studs don't break off ! Regards Jim
  15. Hi, did you refit the pressure plate correctly ? Regards Jim
  16. Hi Jesse, the mix screws are under the rubber plugs ... with there adjustment you must be quite careful as the point of the screw is very fine and if screwed down to tight (to start the adjustment) the points can break off. To set them ensure that the valve clearence, ign timming/dwell & carb balance are correct, with a warm engine screw them in and back them out about a turn or so then just adjust them slightly until you get an even tick over and when load is applied to the gen (turning the lights on perhaps) the idle speed doesn't drop. If the screws are broken you have a problem as the broken off bits are near impossible to remove from the carb bodies Regards Jim
  17. If you have not replaced the oil yet undo the cover with the 6 bolts in and clean out the strainer also ... With fuel in the oil the worse case is worn cylinder/piston and/or rings .... just keep an eye on it !!! Regards Jim
  18. Hi Barwell, The M45 ... the road to nowhere !!!! (bar the M1) I to have used the M45 as a testing ground managed bit more than a ton on the old Venture Royal tho ! Regards Jim
  19. Hi Sleepyk, it was simple ... just look up the part number from the parts book , and then google the part number ! Regards Jim

    speedo

Hi Alec, I would guess it to be the speedo head rather than cable, if the cable was at fault you would tend to get no speedo reading or a flicking effect. Regards Jim
  21. That could be a problem with riding a Suzki rather than a Yamaha !
  22. Hi Jesse, I guess the carbs need some more work.. sohc XS400's were just a bit odd with regard to their carbs Regards Jim
  23. Hi WF, on commision (new bike out of the box) there was no need to hold the thing back ... it was true in the mid 70's the extra wheel added to the pump (on your pump its a big black cover to the pumps left as you look at it) and the process was to turn the back gear (in order to prime the pump and small bore pipes) to ensure oil was delivered to the engine. With the introduction of High Speed pumps (the blank on the back of the pump) it was no longer a requirement to bleed the pump in the old fashioned way .. just make sure the air is out the bleed screw & run the motor Regards Jim

    CPC

Hi Janey, cycle riders are bad ....I agree .. I was driving back from tip and a cycle pulled out in front of me & rode on the road for about 2 miles at the point I could not over take due to on comming traffic the cars behind felt I was being silly (lights horns etc) if the cycle had got off the road in order for me to pass the hold up would have been less than it was !!! hence perhaps CPC should filter down to no licenced road users also (including Horse riders !!!) So I'll just keep driving the bin lorry to the point that everyone is safe ! Regards Jim

    Yamaha YB100

Hi Alex, just strip the cylinder off & see if there is any damage ( I guess there will be) and I would guess there will be no need to replace the head unless it has a warpage problem Regards Jim
