Hey lads,

My Virago 535 doesn't do more then 100 km/h ( at it is an exact thing, always shots down at this speed) I was suspecting an exhaust restriction but there is nothing in the pipes. I have cleaned the carb and the jets are good size i think.

My only other guess is the cdi ignition box ( I think air filter is standard as well)

Does anyone know what part number might be printed on a restricted cdi box? If any at all?

If the numbers printed actually does not tell about restriction then is there any test to find out whether this is causing the cut off at 100km/h or might be something else ( I can't think of anything else any more but any suggestion is welcomed)

Many thanks,

Gabor

In the UK, there is a licence restriction for younger riders having to limit their bikes to 33bhp. Granted this would allow a lot more the 60mph (100kpm), but are there similar laws in Hungary, or has your bike been imported from a Country that has a similar restriction ( I know you have issues confiming your bikes true identity). Best of luck with this mate

Hey,

I actually live in Ireland and the bike was bought here but it is originally from the UK. I have looked at almost everything by now that would cause the bad performance in higher gears (4-5) at around 100 km/h. So you think that even if it was restricted somehow to 33bhp, it should do more than a 100? Could it still be fuel issue? Carb you think? (although I cleaned them and synchronized them) The bike shots down exactly when it gets to 100 so this is why I am very suspicious. To me it seems something electrical.

Also the reason why I try to identify it is I want to find out from Yamaha whether it is factory restricted (and how) or not.

Thanks

You say you cleaned the carbs , are you sure there where noe restrictors fitted to them, usually to stop the slides going right to the top,

Sorry mate, I got confused, I thought you said you came from Hungary.

Anyway, my boys bike is restricted at the carbs, exactly as merv says. Maybe whoever done your bike got carried away a bit and restricted it beyond 33bhp. I dont think you can actually restrict it from the CDI

the carbs were absolutely in bits and pieces, properly and I didn't see anything. I think the slides went all the way fine as well. I will measure jets again to see if they are the original ones.

I am from Hungary but living here in Ireland now 7 years.

CDI restrictors do exist though but by the look of them or by any of the numbers written on them you can't actually tell if they are restricted ones installed in your bike or not so I was wondering if there is any other way to tell ( I guess taking it out from another 535 and putting it into mine is one way if I find one)

Now the other thing is that I can recheck the air-filter (sometimes they restrict those - intake) and I can also do a valve clearance test but after that I can't really think of anything else.

Thanks anyway!

Exactly 100kph?

Jap import. Dont know how you overide it myself. Used to be a plug in on the 400's. Dont know what they do now.

Mervin, maybe you meant the needle jet set up in the slide. I found out they can be set to a few different positions and they might make a difference.

Yeah a 100 or a little bit over sometimes ( only found out today that it can do a bit more with half throttle [110kmh] )

I left the cdi alone for a little while now I am back to the carb which I took apart again today. Main jet was marked 107.5 where it should be 132 (at least) according to service manual. So changed them to 130 jets. it makes some differnce in 1-3 gears but with full throttle it still doesn't run fine. Still max 110 kmh

I need to check the needle yet and other jets (only had some main jets lying around, I was only lucky to change them straight away) and see if it improves.

Does all this sound familiar to any of you here?

I am not so sure about the restriction any more. cdi doesn't seem like a box that could do all this by itself.

I am thinking it is a carburetor set up problem.

Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated!

(it seems every day I find something different on this virago that isn't set right, but it is very interesting, I hope I will find the problem and it will run like it should be)
