Came across this company when i was in my local bike shop, and there was people talking about uninsured losses (excess)

www.motorcycle-lep.co.uk

its free to register, and if your in a non fault accident they will recover your costs.

There number is 0800 089 2289 and once registerd on there site you just phone them if your involved in an accident.

I am not affiliated with the company other than just being registered myself, but think its well worth it as its free and not everyone gets legal cover with there insurance

Not knocking it but I am unsure if Scottish law is different to English law in these matters. A bit like "no win, no fee" to me. There are expert law firms about who specialise in Biking claims.

Nothing wrong with it just being Scottish (I will leave all that cr4p to Salmond and the muppets in London). But it seems to sit on the back of these people LINKY. and the only the lawyers actually get rich. The rest of us pay though premiums and the associated costs to services.

Call me cynical (sorry Jason) but if you had a decent claim, any no win no fee vulture would take your case on. If you had brought protection cover then a company would be obliged to take on the work. If it is free then they can only cherry pick the ones they think they can win. If you paid for cover, I don't think you would necessarily get a better service as if they think your claim is a lost cause, I am sure your case notes would be coasters for tea cups until they told you that they were dropping the case.

I have passed this along to a learned freind http://the-zebra.com/ on another forum but this is not him but a scot that has knowledge of the firm

Only a few weeks ago we had a talk from Brenda Mitchell who works for (or possible is) MLS. I'm sure she mentioned something about the law changing about legal cover being included (either as part of or as an option) no longer being allowed. I'm sure Whealie can confirm but it may be bollocks as in all honesty the rest of her presentation was a load of crap. She gave us scenarios of accidents and we had to work out who was to blame and then she revealed what the courts said. Some of the court rulings were unbelievable and only when we really pressed her did she admit that she had omitted some crucial facts from the scenario along the lines of the was biker doing twice the speed limit while filtering or the biker was pissed. Her whole presentation did more to drive me away from her practice than towards it as it was such a blatant case of being selective with the facts to make a good story that she lost all credibility. She also made some pretty wild claims about motoring law and what was legal and illegal which surprised a few people (including some pros) in the room. Subsequent checks showed that she was downright wrong and ill informed.

I suppose thats the problem with ambulance chasers. They will do and say anything to get you hooked and while you are lying in a hospital ward you are easy prey.

Do you get the feeling I wasn't impressed?

Whealies take on this

Am rushing out so very quick abridged answer

Most legal claims are now funded by Conditional Fee Arrangements (no win, no fee). Even if you have a contract with a lawyer they often use these as they are a lucrative way to make money (the success fee on a simple case is more than the hours they have worked).

Because of this, lawyers (and loads of middlemen, insurers, brokers etc) would charge and pay "referral fees" to get business - if you had a cast-iron claim a lawyer would buy your case from your broker or insurer for hundreds, maybe thousands, cos even after paying this they'd still be quids-in from the success fee

The government is cutting the amount lawyers can get as a success fee.
Referral fees are on their way out.

In addition the new regulator the FCA (which recently replaced the FSA) has made clear it is to scrutinise the add-ons that brokers sell. Brokers often get more per add-on that they sell you than they get for the much more expensive and complex insurance policy. Commission may be 50% for an add-on (or more).

And one more thing - lawyers can now become part of bigger claims handling companies, either expanding themselves or, increasingly, being taken over by brokers, insurers, claims handler, doctors, accountants and all sorts. And law firms are allowed to advertise (they were banned by their profession from doing so).

All in all it is a pretty different environment that may make it more competitive for small pots of money. Without being able to rely on referral of business and making smaller amount for the work they do get, lawyers need to do their best to secure your business before you've had an accident. Most claims apps on phones have been written by law firms to win business.
