  1. Listen to the old gits ;)

Either take it to someone for BRAZING or replace it! I did say this in my first post ;)

I have delt with leaking tanks before and ALWAYS brazed them. As Phil found out... it's too thin to weld and weld goes hard and brittle and no doubt it will crack again. THE ONLY WAY to repair a tank PROPERLY is to braze it, as the brazed joint remains flexible and will not crack.

The easiest thing would be to buy another tank... you can still sell yours and it would save a lot of hassle :D

Have to disagree - we have used JB weld on several tanks - and NEVER had a problem, was recommended to us by one of the well known bike builders. Yeah you can replace it - but if you cant afford to or dont want to then they are EASILY repaired if you take your time. :D

  2. All the best hope it goes well!!

Dont forget you can also sponsor me for my motorcycle challenge in November on an Enfield Bullet in india, in aid of Scope - the charity that helps children with cerebal palsy

    details HERE

    (blatant plug! )

  3. Well that's changed a bit, must have been lack of education and exposure to the outside world, as for my OH she is 46 and looks 35 apart from the grumbling whick makes her sound 60+ hehehehe things have changed here when was your last visit ?

    cheers

Lets see a piccy of yor lovely missus then!

Was last there in 2005 - will hopefully be going back either nest year or the year after :D

  4. I just had to reply, Yanks having a go at brits and vice versa, both complaining about their slang and roads....ok here goes, I have learnt English at school since the age of 5 ( very very long time ago) and yet I have to decipher both your slang.....now when it comes to roads, I invite you all for a ride on our tiny island of Malta.......not much worries about the weather but corners, junctions, sharp turns, crazy car drivers ( driving in the shade) and as many potholes as you can possibly count, so pls. pls. don't complain about your roads........now for pillon with high heels, most local riders which are in their hundreds here meet at the same place Sunday morning, the HD riders dressed to kill and don't mingle, the sport bike riders dressed like they just came from a grand prix and the cruisers ( non HD) tee shirt and shorts since it's too bloody hot...... well for the ladies, I invite the gents for a look, my god..............( sorry ladies) so here goes my two pennies worth off contribution

Malta is absolutely fantastic! Its a very beautiful place. We stay at Marsascala - we love it!

but as for your women - my dad was in the army for 38 years and a lot of his mates were married to Maltese women as they were stationed there a lot back in the 60's and 70's - they are absolutely stunning when they are young, but jaysus they grow into right ugly buggers once they hit 40! Sorry but its true! l

  5. having just read the above i notice you say you found a small plastic thingie as you call it? could this be the non return valve fitted on most breather pipes as a saftey function on most motorcycles?

You mean the one that allows air to escape from the tank, for example due to thermal expansion of the air in the tank, that if removed could pose a serious threat to ones health and safety? :o;)

  6. And according to Rod my friendly powdercoater you can fill small pits in casings and other things with JB weld and powdercoat em after safely about the only thing they can find to do it. but it is a bugger too sand etc when hard

    Merv

It is indeed - you need to grind it really - but its proper decent stuff.

  7. Regarding lowering the front end - some info for you:

Unless you have an idea of what you are doing I would not recommend lowering the front end at all.

You should NEVER lower the front without lowering the rear. If you just lower the front, you unbalance the bike the wrong way. Many bikes can be lowered by approximately an inch in the front fairly easily by modifying or removing the stock preload spacer. Some bikes come with preload spacers that compress the fork springs an inch or more when the fork is unloaded. Shortening the spacer drops the front end of a bike an amount roughly equal to what you removed from the spacer. But be careful not to go beyond the point where there is minimal pressure on the spring when the suspension is fully extended. If you go beyond this point, your bike will be effectively springless when the front extends completely, as when the front wheel drops into a dip in the road at speed. Not a pretty scenario. In my experience, actually RAISING the front end along with raising the rear of the bike (via an adjustable shock) is a much better way to go, as this increases the ground clearance at both ends and depending on the amount the rear is raised, may also make the "turn in" require less effort.

Some of the common myths about lowering the front end are that it makes the bike turn in faster and loads the front wheel. The bike will not "turn in" any faster by lowering the front, it will turn in "easier", by requiring less effort at the bars to initiate counter steering.

Raising the rear has very similar effects to lowering the front, although as mentioned, it actually increases the ground clearance. Lowering the rear will increase the trail, and increase the effort required to turn the bike. Raising or lowering the rear will also affect traction on corner exit, as it will change the fulcrum point of the chain/swingarm pivot/rear axle relationship.

Typically (but not always, as it depends on several other factors in the geometry and suspension), lowering the rear will increase the bikes ability to "hook up" on corner exit, while raising the rear will increase the bikes tendancy to spin the tyre on corner exit (sometimes referred to as oversteering, although the term oversteering actually can be applied to several handling characteristics).

And heres the post i made about the GSXR project a while back:

Here you go - how it was when we got it:

    Originalslingy.jpg

How it looks now, 2 engines later:

    Slingy1.jpg

It now has an R1 subframe on it which is being chopped off again and raised up by about 2 inches. Seat unit, frame and mudguards are pearl white. Electrics just been finished. Polished frame, polished casings, nice upside down forks etc etc etc. Cant decide on a headlight though - got 2 at mo, Hayabusa one and a Gilera one - hmmmm.....decisions decisions.

Should be finished by October - just bough a crash damaged Bandit 600 too......next!!!

  8. Hi

    Thanks for the info,

Dont see many of them bandit 400's that looks very nice how long did it take

Dunno - i didnt do it lol - well - jacked it up a bit and done some "interior" work but thats about it.

The GSXR project we have on the go at the mo has taken about 18 months but thats been due to a lack of time - it will be ready in a few weeks though.

  9. Vance and Hines are a good start - but you will need the front header pipe off your stock exhaust as theses are not a full system

I have Caligula Wave on mine - and theres no discolouration whatsiever on them - take a look at my profile - theres a piccy on there.

  10. Absolutely outrageous.

Bit like the footballer Luke McCormick who was weaving across the road and more than twice the legal alcohol limit AND wasnt even insured for the range rover he was driving when he was involved in a crash that killed two young boys aged 8 and 10. Their father is in intensive care at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire with a broken back and neck, plus severe internal injuries.

I bet he gets nothing more than a small ban and a even smaller fine

  11. Now I am in a real mess, V&H representatives are telling me I need the 31505 for my model and Cruzer Ecosse are telling me that they and Mag Ltd the European V&H importers recommend the 31501 for Europe, when I wrote back to V&H they said sorry can't help :( is there any one out there that has fitted either the 31505 or 31501 to the 2007 European Model whatever that might be, the cherry on the cake is my Yamaha dealer insisting that our model is different from the US models........at this rate I am going to gut my stock pipes.....

    cheers

    Joe

Your Yamaha dealer needs to do his homework. The only difference in models is the 49 state and the Californians. Other than that there is NO difference. As i said previously - mine is a 49 state one and i have NEVER had any problems fitting european parts so he is talking through his arse. As him what exactly he thinks the differences are........

Why dont you just ask them if you can return the pipes if they dont fit before you buy them?

  12. No, I'm not on Facebook, nor do I wish to be

I use an old invention called the telephone or e-mail to stay in touch with people

My folks live in Fiji - therefore the only time we can call each other is early morning or very late in the evening as they both work. Sometimes i dont get to speak to them for a couple of weeks so Facebook is a great way of keeping up to date wth each other, and they get to see pictures of my children on a regular basis as the email out there is pants so they dont always get them. Both my brothers are in the army and facebook is one of the few applications they can access when they are away on manoevres, so again its a great way of keeping in touch - even if its just to say hi.
