  1. Which switch would that be? I mentioned that the switches checked out as OK and that the relay was possibly at fault. This is £60., however is shared by many Yamahas so are available on ebay for about £20. Are you suggesting replacing the relay or one of the switches? My mechanic said that these relays are almost without question reliable and are rare in failing. One issue that I did find was that my rectifier block connector had fused together ( previous rectifier issue- daft place to put a rectifier). Although it looked good from the outside it could not be pulled apart and having exposed the wiring could see evidence of scorching. These have been cut back and replaced. the system is now charging at about 14.4 v which is up from the 13,8 v before , so we have overcome some resistence. I have since replaced the relay with a second hand one and this combined with the rectifier block fix has addressed the issue of being able to start with the side stand down in neutral, so all is good. Next hurdle is the mot on Thursday.
  2. Hey Guys. I'm working on the 650 and am having trouble with the whole engine cut out system. Its a 97 4VR2 XVS 650. checking through the usual culprits the neutral switch was worn so this has been replaced. All clutch ,sidestand, ignition and kill switch check out as ok. However I can only start the bike when the sidestand is up ( in neutral or gear with the clutch pulled in. The moment I go to put the sidestand down the engine cuts out even when in neutral. My thinking is this, when the sidetand is put down the relay must think it is in gear and cuts in as it is meant to. The relay checks show that their is no continuity in either diode direction , which suggest something is wrong here. Any one had this before? II have also considered that in the whole process of getting her back on the road I have been cleaning all the contacts including those on the relay and may have moved some of the wires around ,even though I took a photograph before hand. If anyone has the same model and wouldn't mind supplying a photo or two of the relay connector block wiring I would be grateful. Like I say she runs but I would like to be able to leave her on the stand in neutral and start up as she should. I don't think it is crucial for the MOT but again its a fault I would sooner live without. Cheers.
