  1. Cheers for that. The choke does increase the idle speed once she is up and running, it just feels like there is a point where it suddenly kicks in as if it's suddenly woken up. I did wonder about the fuel thing but it has never been a problem in the past? Which setting would be OFF as I thought the 3 positions were (12o'clock) ON, (3o'clock)PRIME, & (6o'clock)RES?
  2. Hi I was already having an minor issue with the bike misfiring and losing power. Had to take it in to Yamaha (they bent me over) and have the carbs cleaned, new plugs. She now runs well all the way through the gears when warm but in the mornings its taking up to 20 minutes to get it started through a mixture of bumping, turning over on starter (without killing it), and bumping again. It will stall on the tickover a good 3 or 4 times on or off choke. Full choke will not increase idle speed. If I rev it, it almost dies, then slowly increases to a rattly mid high range rpm without that deep pop/firing sound I would expect from a happy warm engine. Go back to start of the year and she would fire immediately with no choke even in the snow. Then for the first few miles I'm having to give near enough full throttle to pull away and when changing gears. After 10 minutes or so, she's flying and doesn't miss a beat? Starts first time every time for the next hour or so but after work, dead again and the cycle begins all over. I'm lost?
  3. It can get surprisingly warm under the Stormex so make sure the bike is dry before hand and get the vents open. Has stood up to everything the coast has thrown at it down here for a year.
  4. Thanks Cynic. Thought it may be electrical misfire. Had the covers on it through a monsoon last night and she was fine this morning. 100 miles from cold without missing a beat.
  5. Plugs new in February, haven't checked them. Haven't touched the air filter. Have noticed hot gas out of top exhaust and cold gas out of bottom. Wouldn't even start after the downpour we just had, took a good 5 minutes of turning her over (not continuously obviously) on full choke to get a very laboured splutter into life then about another 30 seconds for it to come up to tick over speed. Yesterday was a wet morning, same trouble on the way to work. Sunny and dry for the rest of the day, not a single sign of a problem on the way home 8 hours later.
  6. Morning My lack of engineering knowledge strikes again. Bike ticks over fine as is usually okay for pulling away, then as soon as I open the throttle the engine note deepens and it refuses to rev. If I pull the clutch in it winds up again straight away and I can kind of startle it into accelerating but as soon as I change up a gear, it bogs down again. If I hold the throttle open long enough as I slowly get faster, it eventually starts to accelerate and then cuts back in to the end of its rev range as normal. Change up again and its back to square 1. There is no backfire but there is definitely some spluttering as it's trying to increase the revs. Tends to be worse on a wet or misty day. Help!
  7. Well it looks like this one is gonna have to stay in the shop window. She was coming around but due to a monumental decline in my industry (due to oil price), I'm suddenly facing a possible wage cut or seeing the business close, so the decision is now out of our hands. Another 6 months of flogging the 125 by the looks of it then!
  8. The guy decided to go ahead and take it............. ...................................but his credit application got turned down by Black Horse!!! The only issue now is, the law has been laid! If I proceed, the lady may leave
  9. Well the shop has just phoned to say there is a guy in there taking it out for a test at the moment so I may have to keep the xvs1100 in mind regardless.
  10. Your heroism is motivating! Wedding deposit......wow! I wouldn't be able to even type this if I'd gone there, fair play.
  11. All others I've seen are over 6 grand with 5 -10,000 miles on them. The road holding is great, its a cruiser so not looking to get me knee out, more long distance trips with a lot of motorways. Handles better than the HD Sportster and VN900 I took out. Basically a new bike but for 2 grand less than showroom price, guy in his early 60s bought it, did a few weekends and shows, did his back in then sold it to the dealer as he can't ride. It's right at the financial limit of what I can push whilst sorting a mortgage so the conversation has not gone down too great at home! I know the Bonneville engine (same as on the America) is pretty bulletproof...........and the mileage keeps winking at me.............(holds head in hands)
  12. Having been looking around at Dragstars - 650 & 1100s - I've stumbled across a 2010 Triumph America which hasn't even been run in yet. Less than 500 on the clock. In a part ex with my 125 the dealer will let me have it for less than £4000, am I stupid for not immediately biting his arm off? I've ridden it and it is immaculate.

    Ebikes???

Just been through some review pages and it looks like they're not so good in the end. As a note, do people who sometimes ride to work have it registered as commuting on their policies? It seems to add almost £100 on my quote. Even if I ride to work once apparently? I did argue how they would know but they didn't want to discuss the point.

    Ebikes???

Thanks. Yeah I realised that as soon as I looked back at the title. Must remember, not everyone lives in my head!

    Ebikes???

Apologies for the misunderstanding.. Just wanted to know if any one had dealt with the company 'Ebike Insurance' and if there had been any known problems with them. I'm in the process of buying a new bike and they have come in with a quote well under what the main providers like Carole Nash and Aviva are offering. Including breakdown, legal, helmet & leathers, keys, etc.

    Ebikes???

Has anyone used these before and are they any good? They appear to be undercutting the Bennetts and CNs of the world with all the add ons included. Quoted me £200 less on a 950
  17. Bit of a trek I fear, down near Brighton. I think I may have solved the problem now but thanks anyway, much appreciated.
  18. Thanks for the tips! I've got a nice long tunnel through the chalk hills on the A27 so that would be a good place to open her up. Think I may take a punt as the 125 will pay for it outright. Just hope there's no hidden nightmares. Fingers crossed.
  19. Cheers sire. Might have a look into it. Chrome is a bit tatty but other than that looks ok, won't know until I can see it up close.
  20. I've found a 1999 XVS650 classic for £1500 with 20,000 miles on it. I remember someone posting on here about checking monoshocks after a certain distance. Is there any other specifics to look out for as it seems a bit cheap? Has FSH and is used daily.
  21. Not sure. Getting a huge flat spot at mid revs in 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th. Also air is blowing out the hole but I assume thats just incoming air from the scoop.
  22. I've just come out of the office and noticed the allen bolt from the centre of the chrome air filter cover (xvs125) is missing. Must have come off on the ride in this morning somehow! Is that holding anything vital behind it or am I safe to ride home and then to the nuts and bolts place tomorrow?
  23. I know it's an old thread but does anyone still have a link, or would be able to email one? Got the owners manual but need the workshop or Haynes style one for xvs125. Thanks.
  24. They had been fine up till now. Fitted in February by Yamaha in Worthing, authentic parts. As I was working away and had no tools or jack the other week it was a quick £10 job at a bike garage. I remember him not taking much notice of the adjustment marks on the side and wondered if he had done it evenly. Possibly not. Situation now has a minor silver lining as it is the bolt hole for the engine casing just above (to the left) the front sprocket that sheared. Have spoken to an alloy specialist who thinks he can build it back up and retap it. Yamaha are happy to proceed with just replacing c&s set if I get this done well. Fingers crossed as there is still only 9000 on the clock and she runs lovely.
