  1. There are no bits at all on it that are really thin or holey, i guess when it was laid up in '88 it really was in a garage. I actually am only doing the strip as i need to sell my CB125 but know that if i didn't catch the Yammy rust before it started to go deep, it'd quickly deteriorate and i'd be left using pedals on my pushbike, no thank you! The joy of having a baby meant the car was sacrificed, a small sacrifice of course for such a grand life change.
  2. Very small update here, my one year old and wife don't allow for much bike time! Frame is all stripped down, so now ready for paint prep, i'm looking forward to that bit a bit more than the crappy stripping! Forks have started with the stripping, a little bit more time on those and they'll be fine. Next up will be the tank, that'll be it with stripping, then it's on to the spraying and build up. Just need a few more hours in the day!
  3. Yes i've gone backwards in man cave terms! I had a garage 2 homes ago, then a car port last time round, now i have nothing, boo! It was a quich strip before relocating to the garden. Drewpy, i've no doubt i could've, but it really is a budget build, so £50 is better spent on other bits. My time is free and the wire wheels are only £3 each. Would've been nice though as a powder coat would've been great. Hey ho. I'll be complaining in a year about the rust!
  4. Here it is before the strip and engine change. I got a seat cover as a christmas present! Here is me stripping it down and the frame And here is the frame as it stands at the moment, lots to do!
  5. Hello there! I've posted in a couple of different sections, but as the bike is now officially a project i thought i'd create a "proper" project thread. Short history of the bike... Bought 18 months ago, it had been off the road since around '88, i bought it from the original owner, so an owner number 2, which is nice. The wee Yammy was and is in a bit of a mess, but passed an MOT last december after a bit of tinkering and some new tyres and a fuel tap. I then decided that the speed wasn't up to much even by my standards (riding on CBT, but been driving cars for a decade) so i bought a V80 to put in it's place. The little thing is much nicer with that engine, can do 50 easily enough but i really just wanted it so that i could get to 30 a bit quicker. I ride an '88 cb125 as my daily (a baby meant i had to curtail my classic car obsession!) but i do really like the Yammy and will sell the Honda once it's back on the road. So last week i had a chat with my wife and we/she decided that it would be the ideal time to strip down the Yammy. It needs a bit of frame work as it is pretty rusty and i didn't want it to go too deep as it's just surface with a couple of areas of pitting, but no holes or thin metal anywhere, which is nice. I got the strip down done in a few hours and did an hours worth of wire wheeling on the frame yesterday. Below are a couple of pictures, i hope to have the bike back on the road by June at the latest. It's not going to be a show bike and is going to be used daily, so i'll be doing it all on a relative budget, especially as it's worth buttons anyway!
  6. Hi Frank! I have a 76 V50 (just plonked a V80 engine in it though). Regarding petcock, i boughta Chinese one on ebay last year, brand new, but it's rubbish. The vacuum side is just left dribbling open. I have looked at fitting one from a FS1E, as you can buy budget ones, but i'm not certain if the thread is the same, but it is a conventional On-Res-Off tap so a bit less to go wrong. They are about £8 on ebay, so may be worth a go, i've just been blowing all my pennies on the engine, so haven't had the funds to justify the tap (even at that price!). If you need any other info, i'm happy to help as much as i can!
  7. The engine will be swapped out very soon, so any work will be done to that one
  8. Ha, yes i understand the basic principles of "you get what you pay for", but compared to a probably coked up 40 year old exhaust, it feels fantabulous! It will of course rust up within days i'm sure!
  9. Funnily enough, i changed the exhaust to a Fuego one yesterday, pretty basic and cheap so wasn't expecting much, but the chrome on the original was terrible so needed to replace. It is so much better! I assume because the original is coked up. The bike before would only get to 20 in second and have a massive lag after you change up to third and then would slowly get up to around 38 if no wind etc. Now it gets to 28 in second and with a wind this morning it got up to 38 easy. It feels so much better!
  10. Aye up, There was indeed a 70. Also an 80 and a 90. The 80 was the last before they went with the T80 which was a shaft drive and 4 stroke. The v80 engine fits in just dandy though, which is handy! As an aside, it's the same engine that is fitted to the PW80 kids bike, so really quite easy to get spares for compared to the others as there are Chinese copies still being churned out i believe. I did a bit of research when i decided i wanted a bit more oomph!
  11. Hi folks, i came back and checked for a little while for replies, but then stopped. I missed a whole conversation! My little bike is now on the road and being used most days for my ride to work. Generally very happy with it, for a slow, ugly thing. It starts up and runs fine no matter the weather (the same can't be said of my cb125t) and gets me to work in one piece. I was pretty ok with thr speed, but now seeing the post that it should be about 50 i'm not happy at all! Mine on a windless day will do 40, never any more. Because of this i have stripped and rebuilt a v80 engine so that i can do around the 50 mark which will allow me to get to 30 quicker. So should i be looking at the carb and points a bit more? Or exhaust? I must confess to not having done the caustic soda on the exhaust in the end as i had no gauge of how it should run and thought 40 seemed about right for a little 4.5hp 50. The plug has been a fune colour the whole time. Any help appreciated.
  12. Yeah, not too many parts on ebay! It is complete, so shouldn't be a problem, just make sure i look after the engine! It's ratty as hell, but i'm happy to keep it that way, it's just for a bit of fun, slow fun!
  13. Hi guys, thanks fpr the welcomes! Yes, it is indeed very similar looking to the C50's, considerably cheaper these days though!!
  14. Hello folks! Thought i'd poke my nose in as i have starteda new project and will require some info at points i'm sure! I acquired a '76 V50 last year from a friend of my father-in-law. At the time i was building up a '76 CB125 and a teardrop trailer, so the little Yammy got left to wait it's turn. Since then (oct 2013) the little Honda got stolen and torched (which wasn't ideal), we had a baby, bought a car (Triumph Toledo), sold the car, bought an '88 CB125 and moved house. The newer Honda had an engine rebuild due to lies from the previous owner (not ideal), but i am now free to start the little V50!! So... Here i am! I'll be posting in the classic section for obvious reasons, so please be kind, i am quite capable with a spanner and a Haynes, but the intricacies of a semi-auto 2 stroke will i'm sure require some help at points! So hello and thank you in advance. Callum (from sunny Portsmouth!)
  15. Hi, thanks for the reply, i understand forum etiquette, i shall go have a gander. I re-fitted the original filter a couple of days ago actually and plan to leave it there until i findthe right type. I can only see foam squares, which i assume people are fitting now as the original isn't available.
  16. Hi folks! Very new to the forum, but i am trying to find some information on these silly little bikes! I bought the bike last year to have a bit of fun with but have only just had a chance to get on with it (baby, daily use bike stolen and torched, house move, normal excuses!). The bike had been off the road since '88, previous owner had put a new piston in it and started it via gravity fed fuel line. The tank was completely thick with sludge and the fuel tap knackered. So i cleaned out the tank and bought a new tap, stripped the carb and adjusted it, cleaned out the oil pump and she fired straight away, crazy stuff! It is a 3 speed semi-auto, not pedal and i believe due to year, not restricted? I rode it on my road to see how it goes and it was surprisingly good. My problem though is that i don't know how far it can go in each gear, example 1st only goes to 10mph, but it feels like the engine is strangled rather than over revving. Currently no air filter and baffle glass was solid. I removed the fibreglass and will caustic soda the exhaust, is that the preferred method these days? I'm open to other options! I can't seem to find the correct air filter on ebay, does anyone know other suppliers? I'm hoping those two things will make a difference, plug is definitely a bit on the light side, so i can assume that there is too much air getting in at the mo due to lack of filter. Any info people can give on the bike would be greatly appreciated, the Haynes is a bit limited! Thanks in advance!
