  1. I`ve seen one just the engine in the frame, forks and wheels for under 100 pounds (ZAR1,234.00). This could be the start of a project.
  2. LOL..suppose that works as well.
  3. Oops..can someone change the title on this thread?
  4. By the way the older bike is a 3G6 serial. Is that a 175E? Can`t find it on my serial cross reference listing.
  5. Plan to take carb off for good clean like I did the first one (bowl in boiling water seems to help). Also needs gasket as leaks fuel when bowl is full. I replaced needle and seat on the first bike..damn expensive from the dealer..30 pounds for 2 tiny parts. Still looking for a seat for first bike..stuck with an IT seat. Can get off ebay but shipping expensive for large parts..will have to make a decision sometime.
  6. Thanks Airhead..will remove cover and take a look. Luckily I have 2 bikes here and the other one has an oil leak so will remove that cover same time to see how things should look. Just waiting for gasket kit from Yambits. Damn..come to think of it..if I remove the cover on the one with kickstart hassle i suppose I should replace that gasket as well...maybe I can get away with it.
  7. My next Xt500 will be a motard.
  8. Got original key..fits helmet lock and steering lock..everything works..no leaks. Only hassle is kickstart makes a whirring sound once started. Pull the kick arm back a tad and it stops. Would like to know what to look for here?
  9. When i start it and the kick arm returns to its position I get a whirring noise like something catching. If I pull the arm back slightly it goes away. I have had to reposition the arm to rest against the casing to stop the noise. What is going on in there..is a return spring worn? A stopper on the arm would be a quick fix.
  10. Sold this 5 years ago for around 1500 pound. Can get them here now for around 1700.
  11. Just aquired another one. Was going to use it for parts..but as its registered on the road and everyhting works..will restore it as well. I prefer this shape tank as well. Rode it home..runs ok..idles but dies at high revs.
  12. what she looks like after decals on. just have a little oil leak problem then should be sorted.
  13. GREAT NEWS!!..she started and ran nicely..revved her up (carefully on the revs as new rings must bed in)..set idling..must get chain on and take her for a run..indicators work..horn works..just headlight not working. I think must have been putting the carb bowl in some boiling water and blowing out all orifices..and I did re-adjust the airscrew again. ..unless its the new paint job making her feel better. Also followed the 2stroke starting procedure I found somewhere. Now I need to sort out the gearbox leak. Went thru some of the gears while standing, then no surprise the leak gets worse. Thanks for all the advice..much appreciated.
  14. Found no oil in the gearbox. Put in some oil and noticed a leak by gear lever output shaft. Is this quick fix?could use some advice here.
  15. Nope..no joy. I give up..my pics all on http://yamahadtclub.proboards.com/ ..no problem there.
  16. I keep getting "not allowed to use this URL on this forum". I`ve tried Photobucket and Imageshack. Am I right to click on the image icon on a new post and paste the URL from photobucket?..damn..easier to send a rocket to the moon than put a pic in here.
  17. Love the bike in the living room. Fantastic job..good to see. What I would like to know is what was total spend for a project like this?
  18. Ok..she started again after some fuel into the cylinder and put some in the carb. Ran for about a minute..revved a little but don`t have tank on so didnt have time to get warm. Did fiddle with choke to try kill it with no response (but she wasnt warm). Happy to hear her run a little while so feeling bit better. Main objective now is to get tank and plastics painted so I can mount them and get some serious fuel to this carb. Posting some pics on DTclub forum. What about my mixture..I went 30 to 1..maybe some more fuel in the mix to get her going?
  19. Well blew compressed air and carb cleaner again through every hole I could find to make sure air coming out the other end..so hole A and B definitely clear. If I still don`t get joy will take the carb in to have done properly. Must still check reed valve although someone said shouldn`t effect starting..more to do with power once on the go.
  20. After reading another thread of similar starting problems which got very involved investigating electrics and compression..it was solved by cleaning the carb choke mechanism and airscrew thoroughly. These seemingly huge problems always seem to boil down to simple things. Does anyone have any pics or guidelines of how these items come apart once removed. I would like to concentrate on them. I have noticed a lot of play on the shaft of the choke..making me wonder if its too worn and should be replaced. I removed them today and gave them a through clean again..also soaking the bowl of the carb in boiling water. Carb is assembled and back on the bike again.
  21. interesting test..will give it a go.
  22. Another thing is the reed valve. Previous owner said he had to bend it for some reason. Should I not remove it for inspection?
