  1. Congrats! Unfortunately finances dictate I have to plan 18 months to be l plate free!

I thought over a certain age that after passing the theory, I could go straight to Mod 2? Is that wrong?

  2. Well it isnt actually that bad, just needs a good clean as it looks like its been sat in a hedgerow for the past few year,

needs a new front mudguard, a battery and a key but thats about it, 32k on the clock and pretty much all complete :)

Sounds like you got a winner there! Almost as good as my £500 SR!! Perhaps I should get pissed before buying my next bike?

  3. Nah that sounds like effort, plus ive never really been a fan of hacked bikes, too many people have done it.

aslong as i can get the barrel out and cut a key blank to fit with the pins in (shouldnt be too hard, worked on the XJ alright), then if it starts i will give it a quick coat of paint, buff the plastics and i may even put it through an MOT if nothing needs doing then flog it on, ive already got a battery on order and bought a new indicator lens for £2.50, from the photos all i can see that is missing are the rear indicators.

if it doesnt run i will break it for parts, would be such a shame to let a near-complete classic bike go to waste, but tbh i really dont want/need it

Hope it does run but if not I'd be interested in some spare bits!

  4. Take Airheads advice re the air filter.

The choke is out for choke and in for no choke. They do often not stay out when worn but mist people get used to that. The WD40 when running is to check for any air leaks as it will alter the revs of the engine.

It definitely sounds like a full strip for the carb and a clear out of the jets.

I removed the air filter and it made no difference, so thought I'd double check the mixture screw. I had it unscrewed about 1 and 3/4! Re adjusted and now runs like a dream! Saved myself a couple of hours stripping it down!!! I even needed the choke this morning! Plus I don't lose power when I go to re apply throttle. Thanks a lot Airhead and Dirty :)

  5. Andrew, you can't tell what oil you have by dribbling it over your fingers!! unless of course your one really STRANGE lad, the only way is to actually change it to something you KNOW is bike oil, does sound like your cutch is the problem unfortunately but at least you will get to find out something new about your bike. good luck mate should only take a couple of hours to whip it off and have a look then put it all back together. let us know how you get on. :jossun:

PS take PHOTOS of the parts before you take it to bits, its easier than frigging around trying to guess what went where.

Lol! Just figured it was thicker! When the engine is cold, in gear and clutch in the back wheel still turns. Definitely will take pics - my memory is that poor! I may get chance this afternoon to strip it down but right now I need to take my boys to the park for a game of football. Like you say at least I'll know more about the bike! I'm guessing I'll need to change the clutch gasket? If so will have to get one tomorrow.

  6. Don't assume anything about 'services' done by the supplying dealer. Have you checked the OIL LEVEL? unlike a car the clutch rides in a bath of oil, if the oil level is low it will make the bike (a) have a clutch that feels awful, juddery, slipping etc (B) make the engine torque break the clutch, if the low oil level doesn't break the engine or gearbox first. Check this before you drop the oil to get at the clutch, as parts are expensive, a top up of oil is a few quid.

Thanks for that. Level is fine on flat ground. I've just dipped into the oil with a clean screwdriver and the oil feels a lot thicker between my fingers than car oil so I'm fairly confident it's the right type! Think its new parts for me :(

  7. Ahh yes it's the pull knob type...no mistaking the operation of those is there, sometimes the metal pivoted lever types can be though...i was wondering if it was one of those. Try it with the air filter removed...It should need choke when It's cold without a doubt

Cheers for that - I'll do that before I take the boys to the park! Can't believe it the best day so far weather wise and I can't even take the bike out!!

  8. Sounds like pilot jet blocked, if needs choke to start even wen hot, also air screw is 1/2 turn out,you say,, :eusa_think: bit ritch, or pilot jet is too small ,

It doesn't need choke when it's cold though - even when it's zero outside!

I was planning on stripping the carb down today, with the help if an 8 yr old and nearly 3 yr old! I had hoped I wasn't going to need to but after reading a lot of replies to this and others I don't think I've got a lot of choice :(

  9. arent you confusing choke ON with choke OFF ?

what kind of choke operating mechanism is it?

Given my obvious lack of experience I can understand why you'd ask that!

It's a simple pull to open choke, doesn't stay open, have to hold it out out for a few seconds. I saw someone else on here has the same issues and he was told it can be a common thing after letting it sit for a few minutes like after refuelling.

  10. Just a thought, is there an additive (like Redex) I could use which would clean the carb as I ride or is the only sure way to clean it is by stripping it down? Just me and the kids tomorrow so I'd get away with using the kitchen sink!!

  11. If it's the hole on the bottom of the pipe it's meant to be there to drain condensation.

I did wonder as it is a perfect hole! Should I be getting exhaust gases coming through it or does that point to an internal issue? Tomorrow I'll remove all the filler from it!!
