  1. I know exactly what the problem is. It happened to my xj600 in April.

If you look at the Haynes elec diagram and trace the wire from the starter button(blue/white?) it goes into a block connector before going to the starter relay which is located under the seat on RH side, should be the forward relay out of four. Even though it will look ok but it will be corroded and therefore not making a connection. Mine is a W reg(2000) if yours isn't located there because of being an older model the Haynes manual will tell you where it is.

    Mike

Same happened to mine, corrosion in the block connector stopped the starter solenoid from being energised. It's very exposed to all the rear wheel spray.

  2. the 'breather with the bolt in it is a common 'fix' on the Div, I've seen it on other models of bike also, if you take all the hoses off-note where they all go- having a 'heinous' manual helps' and give them a thorough clean with parafin or something similair(not petrol !) then put back together, replace any missing hoses while your at it, think the blockage may be causing 'vacuum' at the top end, hence the oily filter-which you'll have to replace zwell, hope this helps :)

    Thanks :)

  3. Hiya, newbie here,

I've had my bike a couple of months, I think the guy who had it before was a bit of pratt and botch-job merchant.

I just took the tank off my xj600 to see why it was dripping oil when hot, wnadered if anyone could help.

OK, firstly the oil drippage was from the where the 'drain hose from the left side of the air cleaner housing' should be, but on mine theres no hose, the oil just drips right out of the stubby tube that pokes out.

When I took the filter out, there was oil in bottom of the air box, what I can't work out is how it got there.

When I disconnected both the tubes that come out of a t-shapes piece that comes out of the bottom of the air box, they were both a bit gunked up with oil that had gone thick and white (i think thats because of water and I hadnt run the bike for a while) One is called the 'large-bore crankcase hose' and the other 'drain hose'

When I took the air box off, the carburettors looked clean and oil-free (the oil that has been pissing out of the air box is black or dark brown)

When I went to disconnect the fuel tank, where the instructions (in the Hayes manual) tell me to 'pull the breather line off the tank stub', there was no breather line, its already been taken off, and by all accounts doesn't exist.

Finally, the vacuum line goes to the 'manifold stub' is just a short piece of hose with what looks like a bold comming out of the other end (imagine of the head of an allen bolt was up the hose, with the threat sticking out), I don't know if its supposed to be like that, of its another botch job.

LOTS of info there, sorry, but I really want to fox this problem, because its stops me doing anything more a small commute. I've got a new oil filter, and oil, but want to try and fix the problem before I do an oil filter change.

Can any engine boffins make any sense of this?

    Hi,

I also have this issue and wonder if you found a solution for it?

    Thanks

  4. I still think the Govt. has F*£ked up on car tax, the older cars with bigger engines need hitting a bit otherwise where is the incentive to upgrade?

Not so fast, I was pleasantly surprised to get the car tax for our (new car) Y2000 530D ice cap melting car :P

Get a car that will last for 500,000 miles and won't rust for quite a long time, long enough for the petrol to run out and we're all eating beans for our own gas production

  5. Hi, I just tried to login to this forum using Firefox Web-browser and after using the login page it said the usual "please wait etc...." but then when the page came up it still said Login/Register in the red bar????

I'm sure i've used Firefox to login to this forum before......WTF???

It works fine with Internet-Explorer though.

    Anyone else noticed this?

    Works for me :)

    User error? :o

  6. The only problem ive had with the R1 is getting it up the stairs at night, and also the wife has been moaning a bit recently about how she gets in the garage at night, so ive bought her a sleeping bag, i wouldve got her a heater too but im saving for a steering damper!!!

Obviously come the summer i will put the R1 back in the garage and bring the wife back upstairs :D:D:D

    :thumb:

  7. Just looking at anti-mist products for inside visors and they are damn expensive.

Anyone have a cheaper solution (sic!) that I can use.

I used to put neat washing up liquid in mine and polish up, but that doesn't work as well now for some reason.

did a google search and a product called "Mr Min" was mentioned which is a silicon based furniture polish (not available in UK)

so come on Yammy owners , spill the beans.........

Get yourself a Foggy Breathguard, only £12, bloody fantastic :D

  8. It's a real pain when you see it, you back off and then the bloody thing goes off! I gues the only thing to do is keep at around the max level to stop the oil light thinking it's a cyclist's rear LED :)

    Thanks

  9. I also have some strangeness with my oil on a 01 R1. The level is between the min and max however I have the oil light come on and then go off 30 sec later.

Should the oil always be kept at the max?

  10. I just bought an 07 R1. what are the best xenon headlights?

Hi, not sure about Xenon kit, I went for some Anti-Vibration Piaa Xtreme White Plus bulbs for my R1. They burn twice a bright for same current just a direct replacement for what you have in there, although not cheap @ £40/bulb. You can get cheaper but not sure about the vibration element.

  11. After some hunting I have finally found some pics of my first fast(ish) bike, seen 105 indicated.

The quality is not so good. I took the picks after a rebuild, you can see the black tape and scratches on the fairing screen, as she rolled down the road @ 60mph.

    RD_01_small.jpg

I won't show you what 10 years of sitting in a garage has done for her however I am now restoring her :)

  12. I am thinking of going to the haslam race school at donnington

    http://www.haslamraceschool.com/

Not cheap but you get to use their bikes and get taught by a pro.

Probably going to be next year though now because of fund limitations

Although the money is being spent riding over to Valencia in november for the Moto GP so I guess that makes up for it :D

It does come highly recommened, I have no cash for this year and its quite full (well for the dry months). The increased cost is offset by the use of their bike, which also puts everyone on a level :) If you are fast then it's at least nothing to do with the bike :D

  13. Yep unfortunatly for NEW members I have had to make the hard decision of charging for use, it's got to the point now where I really can't afford to keep paying for the bandwidth and the software out of my own pocket. Any existing member will not be charged just for new members. Alternatively i could put banners up but would prefer not to. This small payment will also hopefully stop all the idiots we get signing up to post spam and links to their products/websites etc.

Have you a pay pal acc for donations?

I'm happy to help out :)

  14. no laws on em your totally fine whatever you buy. if there was a rule on them, then you would't have brought the screen so easily. just a little tip, if you can get it easily for a bike its usually legal. but do check i suppose.

    Thanks for the info

Hope it will stop the wind rush more importantly it looks v. B)
