  1. I'll try that brick acid method. I think I have some of that already, and have plenty of wd40, just need to get the methanol.
  2. I have a '96 XV535 that is a project bike. It hasn't been tagged in 4 years and has been sitting outside for maybe 2 years. Overall it's not in bad shape, hardly any rust on the outside and the paint and chrome should polish up fine. The prior owner said the bike would start but not stay running, and a mechanic told him it was the fuel pump. The top tank is a bit rusted, so I figure before I do anything, I'd pull both the upper and lower tanks and the carbs and clean everything out. I'm going to replace all the fuel lines as well. When I got the lower tank out (not an easy task) and dumped out the gas, sure enough it was filled with rust. My question is this- does anyone know if the lower tank is bare metal inside, or is it an enamel finish like the outside? I'm hoping that if it's enamel, then all it needs is a good rinsing to get the rust out that came from the upper tank. thanks for any info! Dan
  3. Hi everyone, new Yamaha owner here. My wife bought me a couple project bikes for Christmas, one is a '96 Virago 535 with 27,000 miles on it. It's in decent shape, been outside for a bit but overall it shouldn't take much to get running. The gas tanks are pretty rusty inside and I'm going to remove the carbs and clean them, change all the fluids, check the valves, and hopefully that'll be it for the engine. There is some kind of electrical issue too, when you turn on the signals, they all blink back and forth no matter which direction you push. Again, hopefully something simple. For $200, even if I have to sink a couple hundred more into it, we'll have a fun little bike. I also have an '08 Kawasaki Vulcan 1600, and my wife rides an 07 1500 Vulcan. The other project bike she got me is an 86 Goldwing GL1200 that needs a LOT of cosmetic work but hopefully not a lot of mechanical work. I'm going to start on that one once I get the Virago up and running.
