  1. My XS 400 runs well and has a good rev range, so that is good :)

I have found that if i use the side-stand that one of the carbs (Right) will drain a little making starting harder until it`s filled again when I put the bike upright.

That`s not a problem as I can use the center stand!

But no matter what I do to my bike, my idle is ALWAYS lumpy.

I have had them balanced , sonicly cleaned, new jets, diaphrams, ect, ect!

while looking at the mounts, I am thinking that the small brass tubes that are blocked off on mine should maybe be linked?? by a small length of rubber tube??

Any advise is greatfully recieved........ thyank you :)

  2. Aye jammer " i would like to visit bigging hill aerodrome , , and the south coast of england ,,, also brighton , like quadrphenia ,,,,,B)

Theres you coming down south and I would be visiting bonny scotland (west coast area)!

  3. Asshats.

That's why I have a security system on my Triumph, can't even breath on it without all hell braking loose in the garage, and on the keyfob control. The XS400 will soon have a lock, as the battery won't handle much of a security system.

The padlock on the garage door isn't much a a deterrent.

You`re in America...... Why dont you just shoot any scummers that try to nick your bike?

  4. Well done JonnyK :) there is nothing like the first time you get a bike :thumb: .

Good for you and many happy miles.

    Welcome to the forum.

There are many wise souls on this site who have a great knowledge of bikes so you should be okay if you need to know something about fixing your bike.

  5. i know im 44 but i fell off my skate board last month at about 5mph and tore a lump out of my elbow

Hmmm! at 44 years of age, I thought you would of got the hang of skateboarding by now? :) ..... have you still got your BMX :D

  6. I had an RD250LC that i called "Elsie", original i know! and i call my bike allsorts when they wont go :smash: .

these days, i dont think about giving my bikes a name, but i do talk to them ie "Start you b*st*rd" & "Well done you little honey" :)

everybody who knows me calls my CG125 "pop pop" dont ask me why, but they do :)

  7. Round here (suffolk) we/i seem to suffer from complacent dealers who know there is no-one else to take your bike to in the near vicinity

Luckily i`ve not needed to take my bikes there for any major surgery/work.

But they are fools being shitty to customers, because in the long run thier reputation will go down-hill and slowly business will dry up.

The sad part of that is that there is one less dealer for us to buy spares from and use as a link to keep our bike on the road.

I found a small local breakers near me, who will listen to me personally and use his contacts to get me what i need, ie he values his customers and gives them the best service he can.

This has encouraged me to go back to him and give him more of my money, even if we are only talking about a few quid.

The dealers in question will only ever get business out of me when i have no other avenues left.

Why? because my bike is old and they dont care and even look down thier noses at it/me because it`s old (W*NKERS)

I even heard an independent dealer say (not to me) "if they bring thier bike to me, they dont know much, so i can charge what i like almost"

  8. Why oh Why cant i keep my money in my pocket and my big mouth shut :rolleyes:

a while back i was looking for a small sigle cylinder run-about (mini project).

I looked for a Yam at the time but could`nt find one i could afford.

    So i bought a sweet little Honda CG125...... it was a bargain :) .

so i should have enough bikes now?, but no!

someone has offered me a RSX100 at a realy good price, and without hesitation, i said yes :o

So now i am going to have to explain to the missus why we have yet another bike living with us :icon_eek:

Am i the only one to do this or are there others amongst us who have to many bikes for thier own good :icon_biggrin:

  9. I`ve got a leather jacket & Arai helmet + boots & gloves when riding the Kawasaki!

but if i`m out on the little Honda CG, i`ve got a Lidl jacket and gloves that will surfice.

I got one of thier bash-hats as well

no matter what bike i ride, i always wear bash-hat, boots, and gloves, even in summer.

i have to admit that i dont like wearing big heavy amoured trousers, even though i`ve got them in the cupboard!

  10. Quote: Mr White [ id suggest getting some trellis to put up on the fence but cut every slat half way at an angle so when weight is applied it snaps off to a sharp point ]

Hmmm! i like that idea :) i`m off to B&Q tomorrow, to get me some trellis :thumb:

  11. Today I lost a dear friend, he helped me build my 400.

he helped the scouts out in their time of need

he even voluteered without complaint, to partner me in building my tracker,

now he's gone and its....just....too......much :crying:

so it's audieu to my 4 1/2" angle grinder. he will grind no more for me :cry2:

    sad drewps! :sigh2:

we have the technolgy to rebiuld him (play theme tune of Six Million Dollar Man)this need not be the end :)

  12. just a chance ? possibly ? maybe? it could be the same problem i had on one of my off-road bikes?

the rubber from the airbox to the carb is thin and old, so when you rev hard, the rubber collapses in on itself a bit.

that stop the engine from working properly, so you ease off the throttle and all is well again because the enginge is not sucking so much air.

as soon as you open the throttle again, it does it again!

when you are in your garage, checking everything, you dont see it as the rubber is it`s normal shape?

i had this problem before on an old Bultaco Persang if i remember rightly?

  13. Guess you guys dont have much trouble with your flasher relays! :)

took the old one off the Yam : it "looked old and grimy" , when i gave it a little shake, you could hear the internals moving about?

so i replaced it with another that is only twenty years old, rather than thirty years old.

    better but not perfect :)

Took it for a short spin today (500 yards of private driveway, not mine i might add) to go through the gears, and try the brakes :) , seems good

  14. always the last bits of doing a bike up that cause the most grief!

so close yet so far..... in getting that elusive MOT

everything else seems to be in working order on this XS400 (fingers crossed) but the indicators have now decided to only work when the revs are over 2500rpm? and i am having a similar problem with my little Honda CG125 (6V model)

do you guys have any tips please!

do the relays deteriate with age?

are the new transistorised/digital ones any better/more reliable?

can any of you make any recomendations about makes/brands of new relays?

i`m not going to buy Honda/Yamaha originals, as they will cost 5-6 times the price of a patten part
