  1. Can anyone tell me if an engine swap from an 80 XS400SG to an 82 XS400SJ is a straight forward bolt in or are there any mechanical or electrical modifications required? Any tips or tricks? Norm
  2. A couple of weeks ago I went to start my 82 XS400SJ and when it fired it ran rough, had no power, and would backfire. It did seem to run smooth if I got it up to over 4500 RPM with no load. I had to leave it and went away for a couple of weeks and now I cannot get it to fire at all. It looks like I have spark on both sides, I have a full flow of gas when I put the petcock into the "Prime" position (Tried to start it there as well), the fuel is clean and recent, and the battery is well charged. I am pretty skilled at 4 wheelers but am a relative newbie on 2 wheelers. Before I start running off on wild goose chases can anybody tell me which direction to start in?
  3. I just picked up this bike last Fall so have not had much time to poke around it nor do I know much about its history. It's an 82 XS400 Heritage Special and I was having an issue getting it started when cold. I usually had to boost it to get it to turn over fast enough then when it did start it only ran on one cylinder for about 30 seconds or so before the second one kicked in. After that the bike would idle smoothly and run and pull strong with no misses. It also started and ran just fine when warm. Did not have time to investigate any more on it before it had to go into Winter storage but it will be coming out of hibernation soon and I am wondering where I should start looking into the problem. Beyond the obvious of making sure the battery is good does anybody have any ideas on where the most logical places are to look first?
  4. Hi everyone. I just recently picked up an 82 XS400SJ Heritage Special. It needs a lot of bits and pieces but one of the things I am concerned with is the master cylinder. There seems to be too much travel in the handle to start with as it almost touches the grip and the resevoir sits at an almost 45 degree angle when the bike is level. I have a suspicion that this may not be the correct master cylinder for the bike. Does anyone know the correct part number, can give me any idea how to positively identify it or, better yet, can someone post or send me a picture of just what this master cylinder should look like and how it is oriented on the handlebar? Does anyone know if a master cylinder off an XS650 will fit? I have access to a 650 that is being stripped for parts. Thanks, Norm
