  1. I just put in a brand new air filter but it did not have an air filter in it before so the new one might seem like a clogged one by comparison. I know it is running rich because the spark plugs are covered in a dark residue after very little riding and someone told me that indicated that it was running rich. I will try it without the air filter and do the check for the float level once I get the parts I am waiting for in. I had to order a flange bolt for the auto lube system. It sounds like I can bet the float is set to high though. Thanks a bunch! I spent hours messing with different things yesterday trying to figure out what setting was not correct and made no progress. The float makes a lot of sense though. I am not sure exactly what the setting is but I remember seeing it in the service manual on my workbench. Thanks again!!!!!!! Nick
  2. Fuel tank and petcock are clean. The inside of the tank is pristine and I cleaned out the petcock and then let it dry out and checked it again. I have a float chamber gasket on order as well so when I open it up I will check the float height in the chamber. How do I check/ adjust the timing. The service manual was a bit vague in its instruction and so I am not sure that I followed what it was telling me to do. Thanks!!!
  3. Alright, so I got the cylinder machined out and it worked great!!! Kind of....So it starts in one or two kicks but I have no "get up and go." It revs up in neutral and sounds great but put it in first and start going and you are lucky to get up to twenty miles per hour. I think that the engine is not getting enough air. If I pull the choke to make it run more rich it dies. I have loosened the air screw on the carb as much as I dare. I have messed with the throttle screw, the idle screw on the top of the mixing chamber, and the throttle adjustment at the throttle handle. None of this has done almost anything. I can sense minor changes and I can manage to mess with them and get them so far off that they will not start but when I go the other way it does not seem to solve the issue, only run and start better. The bike runs really well after having the cylinder machined and getting the new piston/ rings. They fit tight so I don't know where my power is going. I know I am losing it somewhere. I went through and tightened everything on the bike in case when I reassembled the cylinder I did not tighten things enough and in the process I broke the banjo bolt that goes in the oil line at the base of the cylinder. That part is on order from Europe as no one I can find has it. So, the question is: any idea where my power is going and how to adjust to get it back?? I have done a lot of different things but the post was long enough and chances are I have tried most of the really simple things but don't hesitate to ask me anyway, maybe I forgot something. I am new to this. Thanks for the time and suggestions!!!
  4. I have a 72 yamaha LT2 enduro that I bought two weeks ago for 550. I thought that it was in great shape but I keep finding more and more things wrong with it. It had a wiring issue and the headlight would not work, also it had no battery. I fixed both of those issues. Then it had poor compression and died when it was idling. I dealt with those and now I found that my piston rings are gone. Both were broken and in the exhaust pipe. I have ordered new ones for 20.00 and a new piston for 45.00. My question is when is enough enough. How long should I go on replacing things like this and do y'all think it is likely that things are going to keep cropping up this often? Keep in mind I have had this bike a little over two weeks. I wanted a project but this is looking more and more like not just a project bike but a potential disaster. I just want to 10 miles a day on it at 35 mph to and from work, but I fear this may never happen. I have already pushed it all the way home one time, that was tons of fun. Currently it will not start and I am HOPING that the piston rings are the reason. The carb looks fantastic and when I took it apart it looked like someone had been there before me and very recently. I am not sure whether to keep putting nickles and dimes into this thing or put them in the piggy bank and hope I can get it up and running and sell it to someone with more time on their hands. Thanks for the input gentlemen!
  5. I will open up the high low dimmer and take a meter to it to see if I have current. Thanks, hopefully that is where the issue is, although it does make sense after closer study of the wiring diagram. Nick
  6. I have sorted out the power drain issue by putting in the switch. I was unable to find the problem in the stock wiring and so I had to resort to this new solution. I tried the meter and followed the wiring diagram but I could not figure out why I had power in certain sections and not others. So I only turn the headlight on in the morning when I ride in to work. For my mid day and afternoon rides I have it off so the battery is being charged back up. I know this is not a great solution but it was the only thing I could come up with. The flywheel is out putting the correct amount of power but it was not making it even to the ignition switch along certain lines although the battery is receiving a good charge with the bike just idling. Long story short this is the only thing I could manage to get working at the moment. hopefully eventually I will find the actual problem and be able to go back to the stock set up. New question: so after a four mile ride my bike is dying at stops. Any time that the it idles pretty much. Do I need to clean out the carborator? Where should I start looking to fix the problem. Looking in the service manual it looks like the carb is the best place to start for an idle problem although I am not sure. Thanks for the help! 7. I bypassed the existing wiring and put a fuse and switch on a new line and now the head light works. So I guess the next step is to replace the flasher mechanism. Also, I was wondering if anyone had encountered problems with acceleration past 40mph. At about 40 the bike feels like it is pulsating. It will do just fine at below 35. Now I realize this is a 100cc bike but I am a small guy (155lbs) and I did not think 40 was going to be max speed. Suggestions/ info??
  8. Alright, I replaced the battery and got the new one charged and installed. Although the other lights are much brighter I still do not have a change with the headlight. Could it be that the flywheel is not giving off enough power? I died a couple of times yesterday when I pulled up to stop signs. After depressing the clutch the engine would run for a couple of seconds and then die unless I give it a bit of gas. Not really sure where to start at this point. I am betting that this issue is related though.
  9. Charged the battery and tried again, no change though. the headlight still dead and the turn signals respond the same as they always did. I am ok with the turn signals because at least they come on, I can replace the mechanism to promote flashing at a later point. Where should I start in terms of figuring out what the problem with the headlight is. The color of the various wires is faded in some places and been changed out and replaced with new in others (so completely different). I really would love to get the headlight up and running so I can be more visible when I am out riding around. Thanks for your time, I am not sure what I would do without all of the help these forums provide. Nick
  10. Ok, last night I built a little tester with some batteries and a couple of wires and I can get both filaments (sp?) to come on in the headlight bulb. I still am no further on getting it to come on with the bike battery powering it however. This is the last major issue I am having with the bike but there are a few small ones popping up in addition. My turn indicators will not flash, they did for a bit at high rpm but they remain constant most of the time and the left one has never actually flashed (in the two weeks I have owned it). Thanks for the help. I will try and pick up a multimeter on the way home so I can follow the advice given properly. Thanks again!! Nick
  11. I have a 1973 enduro LT2 with a wiring and/or headlight issue. I have been able to start it but the headlight still does not turn on. I can see inside the headllight and the bulb appears to be ok. I have removed the bulb and checked the wires to see if anything came loose and I did not find anything. The taillight and turn signals work fine and there are no other problems that I am aware of. I am new to motorcycles and this is my first so please explain solutions well. Thanks for your time and suggestions!!!! Nick
  12. I have a 1973 enduro LT2 with the same issue. However, I have been able to start it and the headlight still does not turn on. I can see inside very well and the bulb appears to be ok. I have removed the bulb and checked the wires to see if anything came loose and I did not find anything. I am new to motorcycles and this is my first so please explain solutions well. Thanks for your time and suggestions!!!! Nick
