  1. nevermind.

after taking off the flywheel, doing a complete wire trace, breaking out with the volt tester, checking volts, and resistance, taking apart the switches. I said screw it. i would have to find the part used. since i knew that the low beam was popped, i switched to high beam. put it all back together and started the bike.

wouldnt you f-ing know that it worked fine?

I pulled off the light plug again and tested the two low and high. both at 6-7 volts at max rev.

now my high beam position switch is a lil wonky (it flickers, and dosent always make contact), so i swapped the wires in the plug so that i could run the high beam bulb in the low beam position. that will do for further testing purposes and for now until i get another bulb.

i noticed some oil in the area where the flywheel is kept. im thinking that perhaps that was what contributed to the problem. I know that there is not supposed to be oil there, but hey, that would be a time consuming fix. its not that bad right now and i can live until i get it rebuilt someday when it reeealy needs it.

  2. on my 1974 dt175a. recently i started blowing headlights at higher revs.

i checked my charging circut output and its about 4v at idle. 20v at high rev (6000 rpm) unless i hook up the batery, then i maxes out at 8v

i checked the headlight circut the same way and now im getting no output thru the low beam. and less than 1 volt at 6000 rpm on the high beam.

I cannot keep driving it without some help because i might cook my battery. what part do i need?

i assume its some sort of voltage regulator. but, there isnt one that i can find. I have traced all the wires from where they exit the flywheel to the headlight switch and battery. there is no regulator. no box, no nothing.

is that (the voltage regulation) controlled within or behind the stator windings?

my bike has 3. a fatter wired one at the bottom, and two thinner wired ones at each side. in a ring.

    please help...

is it possible that i blew the stator coil for the headlight?

  3. there is a product here in the states called "saddle soap"

also I used ( and this isnt exactly a suggestion so use at your risk) a product that i work with called "crete-lease" ist a mineral spirit blended with vegetable oil. used to help release concerte from forms. i pit it on my stiff cracked jacket, and it got all soft again. i figure the oil works like a waterproofer too.

  4. goff gets my vote at the coolest mom ever.

way to go. I agree that its a little early for the limo treatment (then again ive never been in one), but everybody will now be jealous of your girl.

  5. I bypassed the existing wiring and put a fuse and switch on a new line and now the head light works. So I guess the next step is to replace the flasher mechanism. Also, I was wondering if anyone had encountered problems with acceleration past 40mph. At about 40 the bike feels like it is pulsating. It will do just fine at below 35. Now I realize this is a 100cc bike but I am a small guy (155lbs) and I did not think 40 was going to be max speed. Suggestions/ info??

speed sounds about right to me. when i was a teenager in the 80's i had some kind of yam 100 i think it was a ct. (pre 1980) anyway, it topped out at 45 with a fresh tuneup and that was with me at 85 pounds.

i would expect that youre getting about what the bike can give.

if your headlight works with the motor off now, thit will only be a temporary fix. the headlamp will drain your battery after about 1.5 hours of riding.

I found that on my current bike (and this sounds wierd i know) but the headlight actually grounds through the speedo indicator lamp circuit on its way to the speedo cable. try wiggleing the speedo bulb with the motor running and the headlight hooked up stock.

i am no expert. period. just passing along what i have noticed in my minimal experience.

  6. I tend to wait and see what the other rider will do, I'm kinda shy behind my tinted shield. usually they rubberneck as I go by.

usually looks like they are thinking "pfffff! scooter, no, wait.... faster than one...looks like..uhh...dang that's old"

by than its too late to wave.

    ;)

  7. i live in the desert, it regualry gets over 100 deg farenheit.

I ride a 74 dt175. what happens if i overheat? how will i know if it does? what will happen if i do? does it cause permanent damage?

also, i was thinking of using manifold tape on the exhaust from the engine to the expansion chamber. good idea or bad?

i was going to do this to help keep my right leg a bit cooler. not concerned about hp gain, although it would be nice.

  8. regarding the gap on the points. I cant remember what the proper gap is either on my 74 dt175, I was told that a business card would do. but i used a set of metal gap feelers. which brings me to the point of my post, make sure you dont use steel or stainless ones, as they tend to want to jump towards the magnet on the fluwheel instead of going thru that narrow hole and where you want them between the points.

  9. whats the best thing to get the dinge off of aluminum?

on my dt the case seems to have black spiderwebby marks all over. it is smooth so its not a chemical etch. just old tarnished and baked in. no amount of rotopolishing with dremmel and compounds seems to make much difference. also my shock tubes and hub have done the same thing. I would like to renew the finish but its like there is some sort of invisible shield over the din. dosent seem to be clearcoated.

  10. Hi Guys n Gals...

As it says up there ^ ive got a fancy dress dilemma...80's theme..would you like to throw some good ideas in for me..

Me and a girl mate are gonna pitch up together so was thinking of something we could 'be' together (if u kno wot i mean)??...

    :headscratch:

Cheers for any input folks..... :thumb:

    skinny ties and pleated pants.

make sure she has shoulder pads. ;)

  11. it looks safe and i suppose it could be a good idea if it were cheap and could be made into a thin replaceable vest that would go under your leathers. im not too comfortable with the clip on lead idea though. as someone that often forgets to turn off headlights, im sure that i would inflate myself on a regular basis. also, any other way of triggering the device would rely on what? g-force (cant do that) impact (kinda beyond the point then) sudden and uncontrolled change of direction, (i can see the games at bike meets now "lets trip bob and inflate him hehehe")

    BUT DON'T MAKE THEM MANDATORY.

there is a difference between riding unsafely (dangerously) and riding unprotected.

bad enough that helmets are mandatory where i live. I would still wear one even if they weren't, but i think it should be about choice.

everyone that rides knows what kind of skidmark they will make if not wearing semi decent gear, and how their head may well and just pop on impact without a helmet. but that's their choice to make for themselves.

if the gov took protecting people from themselves as seriously in other sectors of life, condoms would be mandatory by now.

(and that would probably save more lives)

  12. heck I could pour what amounts to about 14.500 dollars in to the biggest junkyard basket case and leave with a brand spanking new reststoration.

better yet spend tha money on several (or more) good condition bikes making them look the way i wanted. and still have enough left over to make with a peace offering to the wife.

  13. not that i recommend running this way, but how does it fare without the cleaner?

with mine off, I idle fine. rev ok unless I really get on it, then it stalls at 1/2 throttle and runs a bit weak at top end.

with the filter I made up for it, if its driving it wont pass 8k rpm, which is fine with me. thats a bit past redline anyway.

my thinking is that your filter isnt letting in enough air.
