  1. Sorry for that, I just read the first part of the date ("august...")
  2. Hi, Does the fred have connectors only at one side? It could be the turn cancellation device, which appears to be under the tank, but I'm not sure if your model had it. As long as I've been able to dig it looked like a black brick with a single connector on one side, made of 5 wires. There's a drawing of it at page 7-56 of the service manual for the '82 model, but as said I don't know if it could apply to you. If you want to take a look send me a message with your email and I'll send you an screenshot. Regards.
  3. Hi all, today my bike started doing some noise when running slow and turning the front fork. I went down to the tachometer cable. I mechanical I've consulted told me the tachometer needs lube. Can you give me any advise in doing so? (XS400 12E) It doesn't seem difficult but I'd like to do it right. By the way, the only oil I've got is mineral 20w50, will that be enough for now. (I'll by a different one for the next time if needed). Thanks a lot, Asier
  4. Christoph21, sorry to hear that. I've been testing my bike on the road today and maybe the "problem" is the driver 'cause I've been pussing it a bit more and it's able to reach at least 9000 rpm; in fact, it reaches 81mph in 4th gear, so I guess it will pass that figure in 5th. To be honest I didn't test it, it was a bit windy, I'm newbie and the bike becomes a bit instable at that speed... maybe other day. Someone at a different forum with an XS400 has told me his maintains a cruise of 81-88mph, and that 6th is only for maintaining speed rather than speeding up. So probably my bike is working properly. CharlyG, as far as I remember: - Toll highway and freeway: 120kmh - Roads with at least a 1.5m shoulder: 100kmh - Roads with a shoulder smaller than 1.5m: 90kmh - City: 50kmh Anyway, remember to check traffic signals In the last years they are pushing quite a lot wrt speed cams so be careful, they are everywhere, and depending of the speed you can go to jail. If you come along the North of Spain contact me and maybe we can drink a beer together If you need any further information or I can be of any help feel free to send me a PM. Regards, Asier.
  5. yep, cancellers sound expensive... for the swith I don't really see a problem, it's more a plus. I've already started to drive with the side stand open :-( I guess it's a beginners' issue... Anyhow I'm thinking more on find it at some scrap yard, rather than a new one, and mounting it for the, let's say, "bike completness". Thanks, Asier.
  6. Well that means I'm actually at top speed. I didn't find that figure anywhere. It was more about curiosity and ensuring my bike's running fine rather than trying to break any record. Actually I _already_ get frikkin terrified at 81mph when the stability of my rather-narrow tyres starts to advise me on going slower... For me, right now, 81mph is a more than acceptable figure, even more knowing I can get there full of power and therefore +/- safe in the highway. Thanks for the answer, Asier.
  7. Hi Chistoph, did you manage to find the solution to this? I've got a 1987 XS400 12E, it seems to run fine, but when in 6th gear the engine seems to stall and it's quite difficult to take it further than 6000rpm. In lower gears it is full of power (up to 5th) but revving it up it seems to have difficulties beyond 7500 rpm. I will try check more accurately where the limit is today if I can. (in lower gears, as I'm a newbie and I'm not confident enough to check what's its max speed, although I think it's not going much further than 81mph/130kph) Regards, Asier.
  8. Hi all again, Although it looks I wasn't very lucky in my fist post I'm posting again with my hopes in getting any answer... I've been checking my bike and have realised it's missing two devices; I think they may have been removed First: I've read somewhere that the bike has a side stand switch that cuts off the engine if you engage a gear while the side stand is open. After checking the part list and checking the bike I've realised the swith is not there at all. Do your bikes have it? Does anyone have a picture of it? the manual is not very graphical and I'would like to see it physically for trying to find a replacement and an idea on how to mount it. Second: I found an spare connector "floating" above my carbs, after some research I think it is the connector for the turn cancellation device. Can anyone confirm it should be there? This second issue made me think my bike was the German model limited to 27hp, but the Spanish importer has told me there was only one model imported at that time and it was the "full"-45hp one. So maybe the original owner took these two items away :-( For the side stand switch I, personally, find it useful, for the turn cancellation, I have no idea. Any thoughts? Thanks, Asier.
  9. Hi all, This is my very fist post here but I've been reading you for a while, so hello! I've just bought (two weeks ago) my first bike, a 1987 Yamaha XS400 12E, and I'm certainly happy with it. I'm doing minor tunning to ensure safety (tyres, brakes...), but the bike runs quite smoothly. I'm now planning my first addition: a windscreen, but it's being quite a pain finding one that fits this model's square headlight Did anyone here manage to find one? or did you manage to adapt one? On other subject, it happens that the technical (legal) information coming with the bike doesn't reflect the real power, and being the XS400 a model with different versions rated at 27, 38 and 45 hp, I'm unable to guess which one is mine. An expert driver would probably know it on his first ride, but I've only ridden 250cc bikes at 21hp at most, so anything above that is better. I was told it's the 45hp version, but I've found it doesn't have the turn cancellation device this bikes used to have, so I'm starting to think it may be a cheaper version sold at Germany that could be limited to 27hp. Any suggestion on discovering the real power of my bike (other than a power measurement bank)? Thanks all in advance, Asier.
