  1. Guys,

Just a quickie, I'm relatively new to biking, started riding on the road last year and not a great mechanic either!

I've noticed today that my brake light is not working on either front or back brake operation, It looks as if its stuck on, is there anything obvious I should be looking for? Before I dive in blind folded??

Problem solved, sorry for waste of post! I surpassed myself! There were two spade lugs on the brake lever and both had come off under the rubber grommet!

  3. I agree with all of that Darren, but i bought some acerbis ones and couldnt fit them due to the way the electric cables exited the switchgear on my bike, so it's not straightforward that you can use these either, like you say with those others you will only get a bit of weather protection.

Thanks for the reply's both, I am just looking for some for weather protection. Last week my hands were absolutely freezing even with cold killers under my gloves! I use the bike every day in all weathers so though they might deflect the wind a bit! I guess the aftermarket ones might be best, they look easy ish to fit providing the cables arent in the way as mentioned!

  4. Two questions really, my 57 plate XT125R is serving me well but as I commute daily on it all year round I'd like to get some of those toasty heated grips! Am I right in thinking the XT125 will have a smaller battery and might not cope with them?

So anybody fitted them and also what make/model is recommended?

Second question, as many people have commented on here, the headlight is pants. Is it upgradable to one of these hid type things? Or again am I risking the battery going 'I've had enough, I cant do this anymore!' ?

  5. I managed to get an Oxford tailbag from a boot fair for £5 - I hate anything on my back when riding, and this is secure and came with the waterproof cover. I'll admit that I don't secure the velcro strap under the seat, but it's secure enough with the bungee straps. I carry a laptop, shoes and my lunch in it, and it's easy to remove - comes with a shoulder strap as well, or zipped up in one pcoket are rucksack straps to carry like that when off the bike.

I'd go for a tailbag rather than a rucksack - but that's personal preference.

Many thanks for that advice, are they universally fitting?

  6. My trusty old fitness first rucksack (must be 3 years old, so not bad for a freebie) failed me this morning and the one strap is completely buggered. It hasnt been bad in all fairness, keeps stuff dry too which has been important.

So I need a new method of carrying important* stuff into the office on my daily commute. So do I buy another rucksack, but this time a 'proper' bike rucksack? Or Do I try and get something fixed to the bike, the problem might be that its an XT125R and I dont know what I can fit to the bike. Will a tank bag fit it as its a plastic tank isnt it? Or do I go for one of these universal top boxes for the back?

All help appreciated from you experienced bikers!

*Important stuff refers to lunch box!

  7. A bikers "job" is to look out for those people who have not seen you. Those that do see you you wont notice much, its those buggers who dont see or hear you coming. Keep away from the kerb (because mr car driver will overtake and shove you in it!) , dont tail gate, overtake when their is enough room and passing distance, DONT go over the metal grids on the road cos that ends in a fall (although I have slid round bends 2 up on those things and not fallen), if you have to because of space on the road, bolt upright is the answer. Read the road well ahead, dont stare at the back of the car infront, be braking before they do....allways look for the escape if something infront happens ie: the car infront stops suddenly with no brake lights, go down the right side, not the left. Look for wet patches...if it looks wet, it usually is and it could be diesel. Always ride with your lights on and if your in doubt they've seen you, high beam with a horn as last resort.

    Safe riding ;)

Great thanks very much for the advice, glad I've had this advice now too. Fingers crossed I'll be able to do my best to avoid the wreckless car drivers!

  8. Do it quick! Before it get's difficult to find a test centre, otherwise you'll need to do it with those really dangerous cones all around you

I've an XT, a bit different in that it's got 660Z after it - but nevertheless a great bike!

Cool, very nice bike. One day maybe!

I've been constantly warned about car drivers all week, lots of people beginning to worry since I said I was buying a bike! Apparently they just dont give a stuff about bikers?! Hope I dont find out!

  9. Sent him a PM with about the Honda so no one new! lol

Rite thats two of us getting lynched now! Help

Lol, thanks for the sound advice gents. After much consideration and look/feel tests I opted for 2007 Yahama XT125R, got to resit my CBT next Thursday when I pick the bike up as CBT has expired. Thinking of doing DAS on 125 to get my restricted licence quickly and maybe move on up in 2 years time.

I really fancied the Honda but couldnt justify the 3.5k on a 125. I guess I'll be on here alot more asking for advice and stupid questions!

  10. I've ridden bikes for most of my life but never on road, well apart from a Jincheng Monkey Bike (Dont laugh)

I've just got rid of a Yammy Quad and as I work in the centre of Cardiff I feel the only way forward is to buy a bike, I've looked into everything and its going to be a 125 but i'm 6'3" and I need something beefy size wise. I dont want to go fast as the traffic is mental and its all 30mph limits on my route anyway, i've looked at what I think is everything and I'm swaying towards an XT125R as it seems the beefiest and nicest looking bike I can get, it also doesnt look too small for a 125.

Anybody else a bit on the lofty side got one of these bikes??

  11. Morning all, as you can see i'm new here.

I've had a few off road bikes and more recently got rid of a Blaster 200cc Yamaha quad.

About 18 months ago I got a new job in the centre of Cardiff and ive been catching buses ever since and it pains me! It takes 50 minutes to go 4.5 miles on a bus!

If I can convince the missus and im trying my best I want to get an XT125R. Now I've done my CBT but about 5 years ago so I guess thats expired??

I have a few questions I hope your helpful lot may be able to answer!

    1) I got my Driving Licence in 1996, so do I need to do another CBT to ride a 125?

    2) I'm 6'2" and 15 stone, is this bike going to be big enough for me?

    3) What sort of price can I expect to pay for insurance, (im 30yrs old and have a clean car licence since 1996)

    4) How much is tax on one of these babies?

Thanks in advance, if anybody has any selling points to convince the missus please add them too!
