  1. Have a look for a Kawasaki KLE500, same power plant as the ER, but more weather protection, some hand guards to keep the wind off, easy to pick up, stable on slippy crap and quite good fun to ride.

They just look a bit off....

I had one as a hack for about 4 years then sold it to a mate, looks as rough as a dog but it's still running, and he gets 120 miles out of a tankfull of fuel

  2. I realy hope that Triumph have made this bike a 'road-side' servicable machine, not the usual take it to a dealer to plug in the 'puter thing. The local Triumpg dealer to me is crap, utter crap, but I like the look of the 800, and the XC looks like a capable tourer, and I'd probably take a look if I could get it serviced elsware...

Just to put a few things to bed.

This bike is never going to be a all-road adventure bike they claim it to be, first the weight, Erk! Then look at the rear tyre, it's a 150 profile....... TCK's cost an arm and a leg at this size (think BMW)and are too wide for any dirt, and it looks like they have tubless rims (can't be sure on this)

The exhaust runs under the bike, and it's a heavy bike so the firs decent grounding is going to leave your pipes squashed.

It's a triple, so the power is delivered in a more constant stream, not realy much use if you are stuck in sand (most adventure bikes, if they ever get dirty, seam to end up in Morocco). You need the high torque 1in2 pulse of a single. They have made it a long stroke motor though, so it looks like they are having a bash at the off-road stuff.

    Not enough ground clearence.

    Rubber footpegs....

That said, it's a fine looking bike as long as you don't squint, when it looks like the love child of a Multistrada and a GS (choose one, any one!). I think the bike will sell, and I think there will be a migration of riders sick of the BMW prices. They have aimed this at the mass market, those that like the look, feel and ride of an adventure bike but can't get past the "I need to be able to do 80 on the motorway" mentality. Someone will post a YouTube vid up at some point showing how these bikes can ride anything, and in the hands of a great rider - yes they will, but Mr Average will never manage it.

But for me ??? (apart from the crap dealer) well, maybe as a two up tourer.

  3. now you need to times that number by how many mph you think you will get with the different ratio till you get that number that i said we would need in a min (4.1)

    so 0.0615 X 75 mph = 4.6125 too high

    0.0615 X 70 mph = 4.305 still to high

    0.0615 X 65 mph = 3.9975 too low but we are close!

    0.0615 X 68 mph = 4.182 too high but nearly there

    0.0615 X 67 mph = 4.1205

    0.0615 X 66 mph = 4.059

    .

Rather than all the equations to estimate the speed do it this way instead:

    MPH = 4.1/0.0615

This will give you the actual speed of 66.666r MPH

  4. Wow the Trail Tech Vector looks like the dogs, was it easy to fit/install..?

The wiring was a bit fiddly, but now it's sorted I could supply you with a map (after having a poke about). The Vector is a IMO device and much more use for Enduros, but it gives great readouts and it can be super accurate (once you set your wheel sizes). Also it is very quick at speed changes (something other digital readouts are a bit slow on). The guys at Trailtech are pretty helpfull too, I just told them what bike, they sent me the right bits.

I needed to make up a small bracket, but I did it in a way that it just fits into the same mounting. If you can cut and shape alluminium then it's a piece of cake. Trailtech can supply a mount that fixes it to your bars though if fabrication isn't your thing.

I changed it because the OE speedo just stoped working, and from looking for a 2nd hand one, it seams it's a common problem.

Apparently there is another unit that has a GPS in built too!

  5. Sooty Exhaust Port ....

I thought this was some kind of porn link where I might find Sweep and Sue too :hah:

Sorry, one of them moods today..... but :welcome:

I've never had this problem, it mostly clears itself with a good run. I'd try something like Redex (can you even still get that?), but there will be someone along soon who can give you a usefull answer rather than taking the piss..... :whip:

  6. the louder the noise from the back the more it will drink

Hmmm....... mine isn't the quietest bike (XT-Z) on the block, but it does do 300 miles to the tank. So I can't agree with this.

It sounds a bit 'off' does that, I mean I can get 120 out of the XJR and that's a 1300cc bike, with some spirited riding. You might want to have a think about the mixture, is the choke on while running ? Stuck maybe ? or has someone been playing with the mixture screws in a past life ? It wouldn't do any harm to have this checked and the carbs balanced while they are at it.

  7. Yes, the speedo should be illuminated.

I'm doing this from memory (as I replaced my speedo with a trailtech Vector), but you need to get in under the speedo unit. I think you have to remove the plastic cowl with the two bolts, one either side, that also hold the headlight in place.

Once you can see the underside of the speedo the bulb holder is pretty obvious, it pulls out (or it might have a retaining screw) and you can change the bulb.

  8. sorry mate but if you have suffered with asthma in the last 4 years or have a history of it no chance,

Does this relate to Asthma in any case, or do they consider "childhood" asthma differently ?

  9. The filter should come pre-oiled, rub it gently and see... (the filter)

If not, make sure the filter is clean and dry before you start.

Spray the filter, from the air-in side evenly until it's all red then leave for about 30 minutes, best if you can let gravity pull the oil through, if you know what I mean - but it depends on if it's a flat filter of a round one. Depending on the conditions, I might give it another coating, but make sure you leave it 30 minutes from the last application before you run the bike.

If you over oil it, the bike will pull the excess through, or it will run out the bottom of your airbox. On the TTR which I always over-oil, the bike runs a bit rough until the excess has been pulled through.

If it is a foam filter, then cover the filter with oil, and squeeze out the excess.

  10. Edit:  I read somewhere the most dangerous part of any journey is the last 10% before you get home.(something like that, can't remember exactly)

It's the first 10 minutes, your mind takes this long to settle into driving/riding and dispense with the other crap you have to deal with. One of the reasons why Advanced drivers always park in a manner that they can drive straight out...

However, I tend to agree with you, the last few miles is when my attention tends to wander

  11. This is one of those incidents that could go either way, irrispective who is right or wrong.

Incorrect use of indicators is an offence. Using them at the last minute then failing to ensure it is safe to proceed is still Careless Driving.

But it's one parties word against the other.....

In a twist of irony, had you continued going straigh and allowed the driver to take you off your bike would have resulted in an investigation, but you would be in a worse state also!

First thing, write it all down as it happened, remember speeds and distance, time of day any other people about. Then go and speak to them, see if they would preffer to settle up or go through insurance. Don't ask them if they are accepting responsibility, just assume that they are in all of your dealing, speak to them as if they have already accepted it. If they start to deny it or claim the indicator was on, then walk away from them.

Secondly, would you consider yourself injured ? are you bleeding, bruised at all ? if the answer is yes then you must inform the police, within 24 hours of the accident. Then see if they have done the same, if they fail to then they are in hot water and you have an avenue to have them dealt with, especially when you fill out your insurance form. Failure to report an accident is an offence. It's under handed, but sometimes you have to line people up for a fall, just in case.

If you are 3rd party insurance, then contact their insurance company to see how they want to settle the claim. Do not accept any crap about having to use your own, you are under no obligation to do so, legally or otherwise. If they refuse to deal with you directly, tell them they must or you will make a complaint to the Insurance Ombudsman, and ask then for contact details - they are obliged to give you this. They want to deal with another company because they can 'horse trade', it is in their interests to keep you out of the loop.

An experienced rider would in all probability have avoided this incident through that 'biker sense' we all develop, you can't learn this sense, it just comes to you.

Goos luck, you will have to be persistant though, Insurance Companies are utter sods when it comes to this and will try every trick in the book to avoid paying out.

Oh, and you are obliged to inform your own insurance company of the incident, no matter who's fault it is.

  12. ACF50 - everywhere (except the brake discs)!

There is no other requirement against corrosion.

Come spring, just a liberal covering of Muckoff or something similar, hose it down and ride away.

Alternativly, ACF50 as above, and ride the bike, just top up the ACF50 every week or so, don't wash the bike till spring.

  13. Fair play to your mate for joining ! (as if ya wouldnt given half a chance)

You might be interested to know, Bernard is Irish, in fact he is a past Irish Enduro Champion..... I would have loved to go, but the cost, and I'd never keep up with him....

  14. Have you considered a 2nd Opinion from your own GP ? Allergy tests are very straightforward so it shouldn't be difficult to have your GP write something down, of course your GP isn't very well paid and it's always hard for him to live off his poultry £100k a year, so you might have to pay for these tests.....

Just an idea, I've no experience of any of this.

I would think after getting something from your GP , as long as it supports what you are saying, you could go back to the Army and dispute thier findings ???

  15. I don't know if there is anyone interested, but right now the only true 'Race to Dakar' is taking place. You will of course know that 'Le Dakar' is no longer run in Africa (although there was a rumour that it might return this year - but hasn't!), in it's place there runs a classic event (under classic rules, rather than first-past-the-post).

Take a look at the links, there are a couple of Yamaha's running, a classic Tenere, and a new Tenere.

    Dakar2010-002.jpg

You'll have to excuse the quality, had to print the pic then scan it back in... The guy you see here on Number 5 is a mate of mine, on a pretty much stock 2009 Tenere (the forks have been replaced with WP40's for longer travel, other than that it the one you buy in the shop).

Have a look around the Heroes Legend website, there are some great forms of transport....

    and some great pictures ->

  16. I've seen the chains come off two bikes....

1st was a BMW F650GS, it just rolled straight onto the road, no damage, nothing, looked like a snake sliding alonge the tarmac.

2nd was on the motorway, guy on a blackbird (I think, was a long time ago), there was what looked like an explosion, chain went airbourne, cloud of oil and engine parts and he coasted to a stop on the hard shoulder. He bike was destroyed but there wasn't a mark on him. At the time (I was in a car and stopped to ensure he was OK)all he said was "shit happens' and rang the AA...... top attitude I thought. But looking at the bike, and the deposits on the road, he was a very lucky bloke.

  17. How old is the R1 ?

I only ask because my XT660Z has a centre dip, meaning it doesn't require changing for left or right driving.

If you do need a right-side dip then I think the best option would be a breakers over there, or new from a dealer.

  18. Anyone know how i get a pic of here and put it into an email ?

me and my computer are not friends at the min !

Thanks if ya can help !

Right click on the picture, then 'save picture as', this will download the picture to your PC. yopu can the attach the picture, or 'insert' it.

Or, right click 'copy' then move to your mail and right click again and 'paste'

but it all kinda depends on your mail client, and how old it is..

  19. not everyone on the road is experianced enough

    Hallelujah !

    Guys,

and for the last time, you are taking a very stubborn stance regarding road hazards. If you don't stop spouting, and start listening you are going to learn the hard way.

    1) You have to take responsibility for your own actions, no one else is.

    2) You have to accept that there are many hazards on the roads, trust me, mud and horse crap are amoung the least likely to become a real risk. They don't move so you can take action without having to wonder where they are darting to next.

    3) Learn this;

A hazard is something that has the potential to be dangerous, depending on other factors

The risk is conbination of the hazard and how you deal with it,

The Danger is the resultant action of yourself and the hazard.

    For instance,

Petrol, on the floor is a hazard, the risk is fire

Cover it in foam and the risk becomes negligable - throw a match on it and it becomes dangerous, understand ?

The factor that changes things is the rider, not the hazard.

What are you going to do when you have an out-of-controll object hurtling towards you ?

Most of the guys on here have many years of experience riding, some have been riding since the last ice age, if you continue to discount the advive then you are doing nothing more than insulting the experience these people have.
