Can anyone tell me if the vacuum petcocks on XS650's will fit on an XS400? I see Mike's XS has a kit that will retrofit a standard petcock in place of the vacuum disaster that was fitted as stock to the XS650's. I want to retrofit the vacuum petcock on my 81 XS400H with a standard on-off-reserve unit like what he's offering, but don't know if they'll interchange. Can anyone research the two Yamaha part numbers and see if they're one and the same?

My `86 fj1200 `s fuel petcock doesn`t hold fuel back, thus the carb overflow tubes weep. A new one costs $180 a bit pricey..is a rebuild kit available or does another petcock from another model bike a suitable replacement?? Any help would be greatly appreciated,,,thanks Joe

I have been attempting to get this bike running for a few weeks. It had sat for about two years. The carbs were hastily cleaned in an attempt to get it running. Unfortunately, I overlooked the gas tank. The bike will crank, but only runs for a few seconds before shutting off. After reading previous posts, I have surmised that it is from a combination of two issues. First, I need to clean the rust/crud out the gas tanks. It has an old liner in it, from the previous owner, that is starting to flake off and looks decrepit. I was thinking about using POR-15. Any other suggestions? Second, I need to completely break down the BS34 carbs and thoroughly clean them. I figure…

Hey all - I am still pretty new to riding, just sold my 1989 Suzuki GS500E and I'm looking for a new project. I spotted this 1986 Yamaha FZ600 on CL, and I'm wondering if this is a reasonable project. I'm pretty good with carbs and other things mechanical. Curious what you guys think for $250... http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/mcy/344039763.html Thanks!

So, I have this old XS400 DOHC, which has been idle for a few years. I've fettled it to a point, and it's on the road, but not as good as it could be. Pics here During the fettling, I had the carbs off and had them ultrasonically cleaned. Firstly, starting is a pain. It tends to fire up instantly, then die after about two seconds. After that it takes a lot of cranking, it will catch, but I can't get it to stay running. Any throttle action and it just dies. Mostly, it's one cylinder doing all the work, and this post caught my eye. I would like to check the valve clearances and ignition timing but I have no data to work from. Also, I should replace the spark plugs…

OK so what's the deal with battery eliminators? I'm new to the whole bike thing, so you'll have to excuse my lack of knowledge...but I'm learning fast! Right now I'm in the process of restoring a '78 XS400 that is only a kick start to begin with. So is the concept here that I can reduce weight by getting rid of the battery?

Hi, I have a Yamaha XS 250 which is currently registered as a 1982 model. However it looks like nothing like any XS created within that year. In fact looking at a 1979 model it appears older that! My bike has hub brakes on both front and back wheel's. They are also not mag wheel's. The 1979 models have this but not mine. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated: The Engine/Frame number is: 1U5 - 240 - 435 Many thanks, Jeffman

Hello, I just joined the forum and wanted to introduce myself and ask a question. I live in Central Texas and currently have a Triumph Legend and a Moto Guzzi Stone. I am picking up a 1972 DT2 today. The bikes appears to be in pretty good shape for it's age, but has a problem I have seen described on this forum a few times. It will start and idle just fine, but when you give it gas it stutters badly and never recovers. Since I do not have the bike in hand yet I have not had a chance to check the plugs to see if it is lean/rich or the fuel system for debris. That would be the first thing to look at, but the current owner indicated he had and that it had to be the…

Has anyone else had a problem with connecting the Mikuni BS34 Carbs to the air filter box? I can't get them to connect for the life of me. I have had no problems attaching the carburetors to the cylinder side, but the two connectors on the air filter box will not connect no matter what I try. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
