Hey all, Thanks drewpy and yoda for your replies regarding my TR1 blowing back through the carbs, I have checked the ignition and the coils are the right way round, someone suggested it could be the TCI unit, electronic ignition i think? If this is the case then the bike is getting scrapped because I can't afford another one!! Is there any way to re-wire the bike without electronic ignition? Or a simpler way that may remove the TCI unit, or a cheap replacement for it?? I need all the help I can get as this has been holding me up for months now and I'm starting to lose the will to finish it, would be a shame to scrap it now but getting to the end of my patience and bank…

I'm looking at buying a 2 into 1 exhaust and then fitting it with a can instead of a megaphone for my xs400. I found a 2 into 1 for a 78 xs650. Will this be compatible with my 81 xs400?

OK, I read through the service manual, thank you to original poster of the manual! It says to use SAE 20 oil, it also says that 10W30 can be used. It further states that other types of oil could be used to stiffen up the forks. Would 20W50 work? I am hoping to stiffen the forks on my XS360 up a bit. I don't like the sudden compression that they seem to have with me at the helm, my friend however doesn't experience this problem as he weighs about 50lbs less than me. They also rebound pretty damn quick too, I am positive its not a spring issue(well mostly) My weight is now a trim 203lbs and I am 6'4. Am I chasing a dead end in hopes that just a oil swap would …

I am having a problem with a 78 xs400 with getting my chain tightened... When the chain is on and i rotate the wheel, there is a tight spot, meaning rotating the wheel the chain is loose most of the time then at a certain point the chain stiffens up then loosens again. I cant properly tighten it cause if I do it pulls the swing arm into the muffler.. I dont believe its the sprocket but I dont know what it is. I think maybe the chain is twisted or bent....any help would be appreciated.

I was given a 1975 xs500 by my BIL, who got it from a guy at work who said it just needed new points. Well, it looks like it's going to need attention in other areas too, but it's not too bad looking. There was no title with it and I was trying to figure out if it's an xs500B. Is there some way to find out?

Hi, all I just got a 1978 TY250E. It runs fine, but it is a bit noisy. So, I took out the removable part of the tail pipe to find that the felt disks are so saturated with burned oil that they are almost solid. Replacing them with new felt disks is just a way of having the same problem in a while. So, has anyone tried any other material, such as steel wool, to replace those felt disks? Thanks Fern

Hi i'm new to the forum so i'll introduce myself real quick. A few months ago i bought my first bike a 81 xs400 and am slowly working all the kinks out so i can start turning it into a cafe racer. Well as i soon discovered after buying my xs400 they all seem to have idle problems. I finally seemed to have mine worked out and just had to blip the throttle here and there then all of a sudden it started cutting out after sitting at a light. It would be idling good and then i would notice start to slow down so i give the throttle a little blip and it immediately shuts off and then it takes FOREVER to get started again and i usually end up having to get off and push it off the…

Hello all. I recently changed out my handlebars on my 81 xs400. Right after doing this, my ignition switch died. it was working flawlessly beforehand but is now dead. I cleaned out the switches connections in the throttle housing and took a voltometer to some open connections. I have tested from the switch to the starter solenoid and everything checks out. I thought it would be just a wire being that i did jostle some wires pretty good when i had a wrench slip. The kill switch still works fine however. I'm probably going to try and check the connection from the starter solenoid to the starting motor if i can get in there easily enough.......What's my next step?

Guys, Im new to this group, so hello to all. Into my forties now but had loads of aircooled Yams in the late seventies early 80's before going over to the LC's. Then moved to the "four stroke dark side" - I've had 7 GSXR750's over the years. Currently own an RZV500R (not road going yet), a concourse XS650 roadster, and just bought a little RD80MX to restore. I'm looking for some assistance with the MX. It's an '84 and I require a barrel and carb for it. I know these bikes were very rear in the UK but wondered if anybody knows where I could source parts for it? There seems to be far more 50MX bits (and DT80MX) on sleeze-bay, anyone know if the 50 and 80 (and DT) bits…

Is there a Sealed Led Acid battery that will fit this bike or is the standard vented LA the only option? All the sealed ones I've found so far are to wide or low amps

OK dumb question here, but if the battery is dead will it still start? I just put new plugs in, and can't get a spark. For reference I just picked up the bike and it hasn't ran in 3 years. I drained the tank(NO RUST!!), cleaned out the carbs, cleaned up some green fuzzys on the electrical connectors and fuse block and I am just wondering if I will be kicking in vain without the battery? Yes I put about a shot glass full of oil down each cylinder to ensure proper lubrication before start up BTW. -Bill

I'm going to be painting my XS400 and I'm thinking either: 2002 Ford Focus Mandarin Copper or 1975 Porsche 914 Copper Metallic My fiance insists they are the same color, but I know they are not. Which one do you guys like?

Hi everyone. I just bought a 1980 Yamaha. The engine has 655cc stamped on it but I'm having a hard time identifying if it is an XJ 650 or an XS 650 maxim, or an XS 650G. Is there a way to identify this engine before I start ordering parts for the engine. Thanks. Brotherflash
