Hi Shaun, the only true way to find 1.8mm BTDC is by using a dial gauge and stand like this. The stand is made from an old sparkplug so this gives a secure attachment for the dial gauge. Im curious as to how you are doing this with a feeler gauge and if i'm honest a little sceptical as to its accuracy...

Matt youre scared of it, try standing on the kickstarter lever as to try to start it, you never get your backside of the seat which just results in little prods. Keep a straighter leg, see this video

Remove the plug, place the piston at BDC...(use a pencil through the plug hole to find this) and leave it for a while...days rather than hours, the fuel will evaporate via the transfer ports into the cylinder and out the plug hole. The oil if pre-mix will not evaporate so expect a bit more smoke on initial running.
