could the crankcase be flooded with fuel due to all this trouble, how about switching off the fuel after it's started until it stalls out when everything's burned off ?

You know when you're trying to get top speed, at that time are you at or near full throttle? If not then try raising the carb needle if it's adjustable

no up/down front/back movement, and i'm making an assumption the flywheel is done up tight

yeah sounds like a right old bag of spanners doesn't it! The quickest thing is to do what I said it's an easy check but then there's also the con rod big and small end bearings to consider

working from memory the shim will allow the swing arm to be totally free from binding when the swing arm pivot is torqued up to spec, you have to remove the damper and wheel and have the bike supported to test that, then just left and release the swing arm and it should move freely

The link doesn't work for me! I think I'd be taking off the generator cover and seeing if theres any up/down movement in the rotor? movement here could cause the rotor to bind up on the various coils and heat them up with possible bad consequences?
