  1. Thats fine but you need evidence that its fine with the plug chop, hence the wide open throttle. This has to be done before any further adjustment, get the main jet size established. Then when this is done you plug chop again at 3/4 throttle and use needle height adjustment to correct here
  2. Still not convinced it was lean though, youre just going to have to do the old plug chop routine, wide open throttle up a steady incline after about 1/2 mile cut the engine and pull the clutch. Coast to a stop and examine your plug, you know the script youve heard it before and plug colours are in Haynes manual>
  3. But it didnt seize did it? you said it died, not a very descriptive term that! when a bike seizes it either a wont kick over or b locks up the back wheel and comes to a sudden stop what did yours do?
  4. If the jet was too small (lean running) and this causes engine to run too hot, characterised by pinking (pre ignition) and eventual hole burned in piston or at the very least a pock marked cyl head and piston crown...........so..........how much of this was true the last time it broke down on you with this big bore? and incidentally did you re bore it because you said you had score marks near the exhaust port? I'm not convinced it ran lean last time from what i've read so far
  5. How come you did this Steve, have you decided to keep it now?

Hi again Chris Your bike has a four stroke engine and if you run a four stroke engine with no exhaust attached they make a popping sound like you describe, this coupled with the smoke / steam you have seen suggests one of your pipes is loose where it connects to the cylinder head. Let it all cool down and have a look at the connection as you grab the have a good old shove / twist and general manhandle of the exhaust down pipe, you should not see or feel any movement at the manifold connection ...Paul

its more than likely your carb over filling and over flowing, it wont be coming from the exhaust. You need to have a good look to see where its coming from.
  17. Yes youre right, they are a cheaper option but thats not to say the others arent good value for the whole lot, thes bikes are getting on for 30 years old now and many of the reflectors have seen better days, they bubble and then start flaking. and also those bulbs you mention are dearer £12.20, versus £7.99 If you go for them, I think this will be the one for you American Pre-Focus Halogen replacement bulbs are now only available in 12V 50/50W & 6V 35/35W. The bulb these replace is shown as illustration 17 in the diagram of standard bulbs. £12.20 ea. Click here for the diagrams of standard bulbs

If youre struggling, why not buy them from your local Yamaha shop, after all its only a 1998 bike!
  19. I assume the word globe tranlates to bulb to us The DT175MX headlight is notoriously poor, verging on dangerous on unlit roads, thats because its old technology and only 6volt. If you want to upgrade why not get one of these they arent a bad price after all. If you do go for one of these make sure you specify the 6 Volt option, come to think of it I'm gonna get one for myself as it says limited stocks and I dont want to 'miss the boat.'
  20. Good news

Welcome to the forum cort Sounds to me like you either have a dirty fuel filter, or you gas tank isnt venting properly, does it have a vent pipe that has become trapped under the tank somewhere ?
