You should have airbox connected and filter insitu, choke ON and little or no throttle opening, set the mixture about 1 1/2 turns out at a guess...at least the plug should show signs of wetness even if it didnt start I think it's a fuel related issue Where is the reed inlet attached, barrel or direct to case?

What about the choke, I dont know the bike or the carb but it wont start without a choke ? Edit you put your hand over intake of carb so is the airbox disconnected?, this may also upset matters greatly

A power valve, if it has one it will need a good battery to operate it,

Yam filter may have been OK but as you say the jet is bigger than it should be...something to consider?

Have you tried a new plug Kyle and does this bike have a PV?
  14. no it doesnt matter, whichever way fits best
  15. Did you not read what I said James?...they attach to the small coolant pipes from the cyliner head
  16. it'll do for now so You will see that the carb has two connections for the small coolant pipes from the cylinder head, and of course a connection for the fuel supply ...Paul

I would be cautious with the DT100, I have seen ballast resistors and avalanche diodes fitted to these machines
  18. an intro James? (New members) if you can spare the time that is

Despite my silly username I bet youre older than me we hear this now and again Mike, better late than never...take care and a great choice of ride. ...Paul
  20. carb float / needle valve may have jammed, try giving the carb a tap with the wooden shank of a hammer...sometimes it frees it. Otherwise you will have to investigate further.
  21. maybe /maybe not You may have blocked the venting hole on the filler cap with vaseline? When it starts acting up pull over, undo the filler cap and re fasten it then ride again...see if its better...If it is you need to discover how it vents and clear the blockage.
  22. I'm not so sure it's the carb at fault here, the fact that it is ok sometimes and not others, if the carb were gunked up it would always be bad. by the way dont use gasket sealant on carbs, it's risky and completely unnnecessary. I have heard though that theres a filter gauze somewhere, possibly in the spigot that the fuel pipe attaches to...ask '2wheels' he mentioned it recently. is your PV operating ok? does it undego the cleaning cycle properly when you switch the key to ON?
  23. Simon smokey when cold is normal. Your bike likes to take you to work but not bring you home...was it a gift from the boss
  24. Always keep the chain lubed, I use yoshimoto kingood chainspray, its oily rather than waxy like some. Oh and a RAC card for recovery if you puncture.
