i think the thread pitch may be fine and not the usual thread for whatever diameter they are...if they arent stripped why change them, they are probably high tensile too! was the nut loose? or just the gap had grown? you have been tinkering with the tensioner and not knowing how its done? perhaps the chain jumped a cog, check the alignment marks again

could be blocked pilot jets, choking the carb inlet would suck the fuel through the needle jet and so enable running until the inlet obstuction had gone?

same thing happened to me Richard, took a while to figure it out but eventually found the oil pump driveshaft seal had popped out of its seating. I put this down to the overheating issues I was having making the seal soft ? Fitted new seal, bigger jets bla blah blah...never been a problem since

what happens when you press the horn button with the key ON but the engine NOT running?

perhaps the fuel supply is slow due to a blocked filter gauze in the fuel cock? take off the fuel pipe and check for a good strong fast flow...not a dribble
