Could be the detent ball, that holds the shift drum in neutral, remove it by slackening the plug on top of engine, just behind the clutch arm.[ that's on most DT"s] remove spring and use magnet to draw out the ball ,, then test run, it will be hard to find neutral of coarse,
But if it changes gear , that's your problem,,

Hi jim,,,a mate has the trailway 125" and I noticed its a pig to start when hot, Now going on moto x [4 strokes] they were the same.
and they cured this by adding a Hot start" lever, this injects more fuel, As I believe when engine is hot the fuel evaporates as it entres the head,
Now am not saying this is your problem, but if your idle is hunting- you may have a pilot jet or air leak,

Aha" do you not have the rubber connector, ? if you don't, and want to run it, tape off 3/4 of the carb orifice , with gaffer tape [ super tape] not thin stuff or it will suck it in,,,she should run,,
