  1. Ok it's gotta be the top.... the manual looks like it's pointing to those two connections.
  2. Do I remove it from the top hoses here? Or the bottom? Or somewhere else? IMG_5691 by feliks.ca, on Flickr IMG_5689 by feliks.ca, on Flickr
  3. Anyone watching UFC 168 tomorrow? Any predictions? I think Silva has something to prove finally...usually he's just killing everyone, this time, he's the underdog.... I'm rooting for him, I like his style! Chris Weidman vs. Anderson Silva Ronda Rousey vs. Miesha Tate Josh Barnett vs. Travis Browne Jim Miller vs. Fabricio Camoes Dustin Poirier vs. Diego Brandao Uriah Hall vs. Chris Leben Michael Johnson vs. Gleison Tibau Dennis Siver vs. Manny Gamburyan John Howard vs. Siyar Bahadurzada Bobby Voelker vs. William Macario Estevan Payan vs. Robbie Peralta
  4. Well I'm going to have to take the engine into a machine shop to get a bolt hole fixed so I think I need to remove it... the manual is vague as to how to remove it though. I'm assuming I remove it from the bracket obviously up top, but then do I remove the two hoses at the bottom where it goes into the oil filter area?
  5. Halfway done the removal! Question about the oil cooler - do I remove it from the frame and leave it attached to the engine? Or do I remove it from the engine completely?
  6. Ok sweet, got myself a weekend project! Really appreciate the help! I'll get some pictures of what everything looks like once I've got it apart.... this is scary for me because the engine is running so to take it apart makes me weary, but to know I have help makes me more confident so I can get the thing back together even better than it is now! Everyone I've talked to on here (and other motorcycle forums) has been so helpful....just loving the community and camaraderie!! You guys ever need graphic design or web work done let me know!
  7. Ok, so take it apart first, then assess damage, then take the engine to a machine shop and get them to let me know what I need done to it. Now...may have to spread this repair out over a month or two to afford it if I need to get engine machine work done, so I guess we'll see once I get it out! Thanks for all the tips! Need to pick up some stands, I saw a vendor on GTAM was selling a pair for $110 shipped down to Port Dover so I think I'll pick them up.
  8. Ok so looking at this, there are three sets of piston rings...which part # would I need?? http://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oemparts/a/yam/50042959f8700209bc789104/crankshaft-piston
  9. Just thinking out loud here...well, quietly, typing and thinking.... I should take the engine out and apart BEFORE you come, this way I can assess the damage, see what parts I need, AND get the stripped holes rethreaded with some proper inserts! SO! I'm going to get to it!! Any advice for removing the engine? I have the factory manual here so that should help....says disconnect airbox, carbs, pull the carbs out, remove exhaust, remove front sprocket and chain.... seems pretty straightforward. Any tips or just get at it?

    Pins and needles

You need to relax! Grip the bike with your legs instead of your hands, arms should be loose at all times not stiff, I agree with above, sounds as if you're holding on too tight!
  11. So here's something funny... I was at my mom's last night with my wife for xmas dinner....was just chatting, started talking about motorcycles. My mom rode and her boyfriend also rides a cruiser (Yamaha Maxim's) - I started talking about the Twist of the Wrist book and about how helpful it was to me and all of the ideas and technicalities of riding I've been learning....after a bit of talking my mom and him both said that you LEAN to steer!!!! LOL I was just like..what? No, leaning is a result of turning, you lean to not fall over while you're turning. I tried to explain to them about counter-steering but they're so old and set in their ways they actually didn't even believe the concept. I just laughed and said....ok, I guess science and physics are wrong! It's funny because the Twist movie actually demonstrates the concept....with his no touch steering bike, it's almost impossible to turn it, you can lean it a bit and it will go left or right, but with just one finger push steering you can have 10x more control.....I just thought it was weird that people who have rode their whole life (like my mom's bf) don't even understand or know about the concept of counter-steering!
  12. 14 year olds who have been riding longer than me! lol But not for long...give me some more experience and I'll be better! I've been watching some of those TT races....holy SHIT! Crazy mothers.
  13. Welcome! I'm new to this world as well and loving it. Some great folks on here! Enjoy the bike and assume you're invisible and everyone in a caged vehicle is out to get you!!
  14. If you're serious about that offer, that would be awesome! I can get everything I need together and ready but when it comes to putting an engine together, well I've never done it before so it'd be a learning process and probably take me quite a while! You can do it in a day?! That's nuts! That would be awesome if I could get your help! Beer and burgers on me! The wife will even bake some goodies, she's a great baker! Real estate agent is coming to look at the house Jan 4th so it's going up after that. When's good for you?? I work at home so any time is good for me, you just let me know! Would it be better for me to get the engine apart before you got here or would you prefer to rip it apart and put it together so you know where everything went?? I'm sure you know what to do but I don't want to do anything that'll make it harder for you! Can you think of anything else I may need for parts so I can get them ordered up?? Once again thanks for offering up the help! Merry Christmas to me!!
  15. Well if there's enough oil blowing by the rings, then a compression test should tell me how bad it is, right? I know it measures from the top but if the rings are fucked then it should at least tell me how bad they are.... but, I'm probably off.... if anyone's off here. lol
  16. I think my next step will be to look for a donor bike with a good engine. This way, I can rebuild the engine in my spare time, and still keep the one I've got running as-is! Either that, or sell this come springtime after I pass my M1 test and pick up a newer Yamaha. Probably R6. We'll see.... I'll be sure to keep you guys posted. lol
  17. Hey I was just thinking ..... isn't any Hardley Davidson ANYWHERE louder than this bike with no exhaust? lol I NEVER see them get pulled over around here for exhaust...
  18. Welcome to the site! Post a little intro about yourself, and then ask questions in the appropriate area.
  19. After thinking about this some more I don't think target fixation had much, if anything to do with it. Had it, I would have HIT those things I was looking at, right? But I didn't.... I was looking at the road and that's why I ended up on the road. I believe it was a combination of - not steering / leaning enough - chopping the throttle - hitting the brakes - all which lead to the bike not going where I was looking. Once I got back on the throttle smoothly I got control again. Again...just looking at the video attached to my bike it's hard to tell what I was looking, wish I had it on my helmet! Would have answered more questions. I'm just glad I didn't hit those trees or the pole!
  20. Thanks and have a safe and happy holidays and merry xmas everyone!!
  21. I'll probably start with a compression test, see where I'm at before doing anything else!
  22. Yeah the gasket kit is what I was talking about.
  23. I didn't put much of the restore stuff in the first time around....so this time I'll double it up. No harm in trying, if it doesn't work then I can think about the rebuild. Can anyone make time slow down for a bit please?? lol I've seen some rebuild kits from Japan - are they no good?
