had an eye on the petcock overnight and the next day --all ok with nothing going into the bucket, refitted the tank and marked the oil check window with a fine marker nothing getting into the sump thats with the fuel tap at the on position so the diaphram must be ok, ill take some oil from the sump and take a sniff tomorrow just to be sure there's no fuel in it, ive found a lad who's going to help out with setting up the carbs, thanks for the advice though its always worth a looksee mo

Folks a couple of questions ive just done a small service on my xj900f (94) oil first with new filter, the old oil smelled kinda like petrol, could this be because the bike was running rich?and the excess fuel getting in through the bores new air filter next was new plugs changed out with type recomended in the haynes with a 0.70 gap as recomended(the old plugs had gaps ranging from 0.25 to 0.35 and were pretty much carboned up) however the bike ran with these plugs on trying to start her up the starter motor turns over fine and the engine is turning over but no spark and a strong smell of fuel obviously flooding, should i reduce the gap to say 0.50 or can anyone see another problem thanks in advance mo
