  1. Not sure of your bike model but is the choke working ok?, air filter clean? also you could maybe try some of the spray start you get in a spray can, try this by removing the air filter and give it a spray inside the carb while trying to start.
  2. Sorry ive not been on to reply but i have been out at the bike. Anyway i got it going again turned out the black box i mentioned had yellow tape round it when i bought it but never thought anything of this. I then thought i would take this off to see why it has the tape only to find the box had been chewed up from some numpty trying to open it. It was not waterproof and some water had managed to get into this unit. I pulled it out gave it a good blow with an air jet and sealed it back up with sealent, plugged it back in and fired straight up . Cheers for the help though fellas was good of you. UPDATE: MOT today at ten so fingers crossed.
  3. Yeah i had a look at that it says something ignitor on it. Check this though and it seems fine. The black box is not fixed to anything as it looks as if the battery has been changed to a bigger unit as the battery box has been cut to allow it to fit so the black box it just sitting on top of the battery. It's as if its flooded for some reason but i cant see why as i just pulled the choke as usuall and tried to start it. Does it do anything if i leave the tap at prime as i might have done this but again unsure. It's doing my head in as it was fine when i got it as i started it a good few times with no probs. Is there any way to clear a flooded engine on a bike, sorry but im no clued up on bikes.
  4. Ah can it be removed?. Anyway more problems. I went out ten mins ago to give her a wee start and she wont bloody start. The only thing i done was remove the battery last night and moved a black box sitting on top of my battery which bye the way have no idea why its just sitting there on top of my battery. The bike has started no probs since i got her so im worried now, i turnred and turned till the battery had no more but nothing. it did try a couple of times but i cant be having this as i bought it as a means of transport for work. I did get a back fire at one point but im thinking thats just unburnt fuel. Any ideas?
  5. ok cheers buddy. did the ebay thing for the shock but seems there all sold. im just going to clean it up and prime and paint it in the now. the chrome rod is fine in the middle just the spring.
  6. Another question, sitting on the bike left hand side(side with fuel tap) what is under he engine cover with yamaha etched into it? The reason i ask is i was wanting to remove it for painting but dont want my new clean oil pissing out.
  7. ok cheers ill have a look.
  8. Ok i will dig around. Any advice on where i should look?
  9. I stripped the rear shock off tonight to do the linkage, they where ok bar the left and right ones that pivot on the swingarm but its all been stipped cleaned painted and rebuilt. I will say the shock has some bad rust on it so im wondering if any others fit as ebay dont seem to have many unless i want to pay £400.
  10. Ah but i have a chain lol.
  11. for the oiley stuff i use Dr beckmans oven cleaner its cheap and does wonders. Then hose her down get a bucket of hot water with two caps of turtle wax car wash, wash rinse and dry. then i get the mr sheen out for anything thats seen.
  12. Cheers buddy, i took the tank of again today and yes the wire for the sender unit had been taped to the bottom of the tank. I then found the connection you mentioned joined them both and i have a working fuel gauge. Right next thing (sorry if im being a pest). I noticed on the fuel tap i have three positions. ON, PRI and RES. Question is i know on is on and res is reserve but what is the pri and how do i turn the fuel off as i had to mess with the tap to remove the tank today but forgot to look at where it was sitting when i had it turned off.
  13. No buddy it sure aint, terrible.

Well hello to all, it seems i jumped this stage when i joined and its been put to me i should do a wee post here lol. Well im from bonny scotland and have just bought myself a nice wee 1992 xj600. I also have a K8 gsxr600. Im hoping to learn alot from this site with my xj as im not to used to the older school bikes (been spoiled with tech). I love the wee xj already though and looking forward to the day i get the mot on her. Well guys hope you's lot can help and im sure you can and if i can be of any help i will put my twobobs worth in. Cheers, Kev.
  15. Cheers for the info guys. i stripped the bike today and it turned out the bearings where needing greased. I gave them a good look over and could see no sign of damage or wear, packed them with grease and rebuilt and its like new. Other question i have is where does the petrol gauge get its reading from as i had the tank off today and it clicked on me after i stuck it back on that i never seen any wires for a sender unit.
  16. Hi all, well first off im new to this here site so hello. Ok ive bought myself a 1992 Xj600 pre diversion with 28.000 miles but need some help. I bought the bike with no mot and i need some advice on this bike. First off i have noticed the bike seems to have a notch in the steering at dead centre, now im thinking head bearings but its smooth everywhere else in the turning. second oil, which viscosity and where is the sump plug? and three anything that is common on these bikes i should check for the mot? No doubt you will be sick of the site of me on here but ive found these forums very handy in the past. Cheers folks.
