  1. Them 400s are the easiest motors to change, and it would make getting the carbs off and on alot easier and if it turns out to be a dud then you know to strip it for parts and free up some garage space. But them motors are pretty bulit proof. I had one for a month while i was bulding my fz and I thrashed the living piss out of it sold it to a friend and he thrashed it for 3 years and sold it on and other tthan changing the oil never had to do anything to it.He used to ride it 10hrs every weekend back and forth from london to north bay each way none stop
  2. Yes so NOT funny how they appear and disappear, never adding anything.... just ask and when thier problem is solved they cant even contribute as to how they got to the final conclusion to possobily help the next person.
  3. Why not just use the old wireing and solider it on to the new one, then you can make it a perfect fit. 25 cents worth of solider and shrink tube and bob your uncle it fits
  4. HAHAH ya but squires is still months away lots of time to get it sorted out.
  5. Check part numbers against eachother same # same part.
  6. Well you dont have alot of options here, pick up coil and cdi are the only 2 things left.Check all connections to ensure they are not vibrating loose ignition switch and kill switch as well.
  7. +1 and check your clutch free play, the cable will strech over time could just neeed to be adjusted up.wich side did you crash on ,in what gear ?
  8. Stock xt dash = junk replace with a vapor or other aftermarket.
  9. Try taking the spark plug out and pour about 10ml of gas directly in the cylinder repalce spark plug and try to start if it fires up and runs for a bit then the carb is not right. also choke adds more gas not air.
  10. Sounds more like the coil is breaking down,I would swap out the coil first.
  11. That's 2 times then they normaly just give up completely, drove me nuts I cleand carbs weekly changed pick up and coil tested the stator under every possible temp range, was only after about 4months of living with it that I bought another rz and swaped the cdi that I figured it out. Glad you found it I did suggets to check the pick up coils, now if we could only figure out whats up with drewps fz I have stared at his wireing diagrams till my head hurt and i just cant see why it wont run its only 7 wires to hook up and by everything we have talked about he has them hooked up right?
  12. Well first thing to do is clean up all the grounds and check the wiring to all the right signal for rub through causing them to back feed the circut. also check the bulbs. The actuator arm is held in place by a e clip or set screw a look at a parts diagram will show you ,,,so no thats not good to have floating around in the gear box best pull the cover off and find it/fix it.
  13. Hi Alex only on the west coast would you find a bike in that shape,or one stashed in a barn, she looks like she need some new tires and it would be road worthy. Just one thing with a bike of that age the crank seals should be changed,as after 30 years they will have gone hard,Not a overly difficult job and with all the 175 nuts on here you will get all the tip's and info you need to walk you through it. If you know wich end of a screwdrive to use and have some basic tools. The combinded knowlage of theses bike's within the members is everything you will ever need.Untill they stop making parts you will be able to ride that bike, is this your first bike?
  14. Yep never had a bike i couldn't find the problem in a few hours, save for 1 rz 350 17 yrs ago that the cdi was intermittent and I have never heard of or seen that again. Good luck guys keep at it you've over looked something. Or it the salt in the air in the NW UK creating a abnormal void in the flux capasitor's haha I have no idea.
  15. if you have battery voltage on the feed wire to the coils( the single common wire from the cdi),and you have swaped coils to confirm that both are good, and you have cleand the mounting area of the coils .Then that only leaves the cdi to be faulty or if you have dual pick up coils then check them one against the other with a multy meter set in the ohms position. 1 test the resistance from the 2 wires of each pick up then test each wire for resistance to ground. also I would check the control wire to the faulty coil at the cdi that the treminal is nice and tight fitting and not spread open making a poor connection. As the cdi is only 2d it only controls the ignition curve / timming of the spark. If you have a wireing diagram trace out the 3rd wire and find out what it does, you say it went to the rh switch so I am guessing that it is the kill switch, and if it was defective the bike would not run at all. as they are normaly closed in run position and open in the kill position
  16. Hi normaly people like you to say hi first and then post questions in the workshop area, The 1/4 inch wont make a hill of beans difference in fitting the wheel. What i would do is check the brake disc and see if it's the same part # for both bikes or have the seller measure the bolt pattern and see if it's the same, have them confirm the bearing #'s as most from that era were 6302 or 6303 if memeory serves me.If the bearings are the same then it will be a direct fit if not you willl need to change the bearing to fit your axel.
  17. Thats 1 comerical I hope goes viral, even though it's ileagle here to text while driving people still just dont get it and do. I miss my old dodge truck that I didn't give a crap about was fun to get in front of people texting,a real steel bumper and trailer hitch does a number on the plastics on the front of new cars and just about the perfect height to hit the air bag sensor.
  18. First thing to check is spark, pull the spark plugs and lay them on the cylinder start bike as normal and see if you have any spark.

PS I also asked a friend to look and see if he has both wireing diagrams but he thinks he only has a fz I need both to see what the difference is cant be much but definatly something is different in the saftey switches, has to be the problem. Edit: try un pluging each saftey switch wires 1 at a time and leave them open and then try joing them,or any combination of open and closed,,eg stand switch closed with netural and clutch sw, kill sw open. It cant hurt anything as they do open and close as requested to do so,, so you cant do any dammage.

  22. Having multiple projects on the go at the same time, a white board comes in handy for listing the parts to order, and keeping track of the next to do's I find i dont miss ordering stuff since I started using it
