Anyone work for Yamaha? - Bike VIN check needed
Rich A few years ago I wanted rid of the Q plate on my xs1100. I contacted Yamaha UK with the engine and frame number and they sent me a letter stating the year of manufacture and it was sold in Europe. On the strength of that I got a T plate reg from DVLA, so I would persevere with Yam UK

1982 XS250 starting issues
Ben Burn it....... Only joking mate, but I had one of those back in the day. 1981, my first road bike and it had the same problems you are having. This thing had points ignition and I would be renewing them every month in my attempt to get a bike that would start. At the end of each day, I would be the last guy out the work and my right leg would be aching with the amount of kicks it would take to finally start. The heap of shits only saving grace was it got me through my bike test

Dishonest police
Well here we go My name is Jimmy and I am a Cop. I have been for the last 23 years. I'm a Sergt on the Marine Unit so spend all my time on the water but before that I spent 14 years as a dog handler. A few of the posts here are beyond the pale, but I wont get into a personal slanging match. Yes there are a few bad apples in every barrel and hopefully when discovered they get flung out. For what its worth I got stopped for speeding a good few years ago and when my details were being given I had to state my occupation. "Cop" says I "You should know better then" was the reply and I received a £40 fine and 3 points fixed penalty notice.

TDM900 restricted to 33bhp
Whats the insurance costs on a restricted bike. Hopefully my 18 yr old son will be going through his test this summer and he has his eye on a bigger (restricted) bike. As I will be paying the insurance, I'm interested in the ball park price

Given the choice would you wear a helmet?
Not at all. Just get a wee scoop and a pair of goggles and tell them your "real" bike is a pre 65 trials bike. Summit like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1955-ARIEL-350-NH-PRE-65-TRIALS-GREEN-LANE-HT-NG-NG-HT3-3500-OFFERS-PX-WHY-/200779874624?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item2ebf69c140 Anyway I would always wear a helmet. Thankfully I have never had a serious crash, had a couple of overnight stays in hospital back in the 80s, but nowt too bad.

WD40 on brakes
You can burn it off with a blowtorch as well. If its pads, get some copaslip and put a light coating on the BACK of the pad. This will help get rid of the squeaking As stated above DONT let your neighbour anywhere near your bike again

CDI Units
BH Thanks, I have been in touch with him, unfortunately the sr cdi is encapsulated in resin so cant be fixed. The boys bike is now running very well and he has a smile back on his face. I started this thread cos I have noticed a high number of posts that seem to involve dodgy CDIs jimmy

DTR 125 Help please
Are you getting a spark at the plug, cap, lead, coil Check all the way back and then go for the cdi unit. If any of your mates has a similar bike swap over the cdi and try that.

CDI Units
Having joined the forum whilst trying to glean some info on running issues with my boys sr125, I have obviously read through a lot of postings. It turned out it was a problem with the cdi unit on my boys bike and a helluva lot of posts seem to involve faulty units. So, are these units better than points ignition (for the younger forumeers, points were an archaic form of achieving the spark at the correct time), or are they now showing to present their own problems. Bearing in mind a new set of points was about 2 quid and I have paid £40 on 2 occasions for a 20 year old cdi unit for his bike. Any thoughts

Welcome back to biking mate.

starting??
I agree with the above. Sounds like the battery is on its way out. Put a multimeter across the terminals and you should get a reading of around 12 - 12.5v. Start the engine and it should rise to around 14.5v

Hi, brand new to bikes (XV125 Virago)
Alright mate, welcome to the forum. I too have recently joined the YOC Forum. One of the reasons for joining was the fact my son had running issues with his sr125 (a single cylinder, distant relative to your virago). Anyway he was experiencing the same problems as yourself. If you know the wire is arcing make sure you tape it up properly. Get a multi meter and fire up the engine, put the multimeter across the battery terminals and you should get a reading of about 14.5v. This will tell you, a/ The genny is charging and b/ the rec/reg is doing its job. Next up if you have access to a strobe light connect that up and removing the access plug with the engine on tickover you will see the timing marks lining up, rev the engine to about 5k and you should see the advance mark coming in to line up with the static mark. This is a lot easier that it reads. Turned out my boys bikes' CDI unit was failing and unfortunately the only way to test these is by replacement. If you know anyone with a virago, it is a 5 min job to change over to test.

petcock removal/fuel tank cleaning
Randall If you're using a tank sealer, make sure it is ethanol proof. A lot of the sealers break down in a short space of time, giving you a thick goo in the carbs
