After 30 odd years of biking, I've done summit I thought I'd never do. My boy rides a 1992 SR125 and last week I ordered a chain and sprocket set. I took my time ordering and pointed out it was a 92 SE model. Anyway I removed the chain, rivetted link, front and rear sprocket. Front sprocket no probs, Rear sprocket, the bolt holes do not line up. I measured between the centres and there was a difference of 12mm. The new sprocket was 80mm and the old was 92mm. As I said Needs Must and my boy needed the bike for work this afternoon and college tomorrow, so I had to put the old sprocket, which by the way was well past its sell by date, back on the wheel. Not ideal and prolonged use will fuck up the new chain so hopefully the dealer will send me out a new sprocket asap.

Ok mate, as I see it:- You are over 17 and passed your Mod 1 on an A1 Motorcycle before 19/01/2013 so if you sit your test after that date you will sit it on an A1 bike, basically it will be be a solo motorcycle be between 120cc and 125cc be no more than 11kW engine power be capable of at least 55mph There are restrictions to the size of bike you can use after passing your test, but I cant remember offhand......I will seek it out

Good advice regarding eye contact, however dont think that just because they're looking in your direction, that they have seen you. I tend to shift between eye contact and watching their wheels to see if there is any forward movement.

Bummer about not getting a test date. As I said earlier, there must be a rush on. My boy had to wait 6 weeks from mod 1 to mod 2. He failed that and cant get another date until 11th December

Can confirm its free. I have just re-registered the colour of my 59 Speedtwin from blue to black (what other colour is there). The updated v5 arrived yesterday. No charge

For the 1st 8yrs of my biking life, I used the bike every day as my only transport, then I started using a car. After about 3-4yrs of car sharing (my daily commute is 105miles round trip) I went back to the bike as I couldn't be arsed travelling with folk. Anyway one January nightshift it started snowing at 1900hrs and it was still snowing at 0700 the next morning when I finished my shift. 52 and a 1/2 miles through deep snow and sub zero temperatures was enough to make me vow never to (knowingly) be in that position again. Hats off to those who still do, but I feel I've done my time

hippyracer Can't help you there, my xjr1200 gets about 140miles on a tank before I start to panic. Your 600 should get double that then no.................... Anyway, I have to say you've picked a fantastic avatar....Has to be one of my favourite films of all time

Amazing discovery...
Here's my amazing discovery. After 31 years of riding bikes, I went into my sons room this morning where a pair of rubber gloves, the kind you wear when working on the bike, were lying. As I do his bike maintenance I asked what they were for. "I wear them under my gloves, and it keeps my hands warm". I tried it today and bugger me, it works. I have worn silk liners under my gloves before, but this beats that.

I agree on all points. The roads on my way to work are a mixture of motorway/dualcarraigeway and very twisty A roads. If I pass cars or bikes on the twisties and then slow down in the 40 zones, invariably I get these twats flying by me doing about 60 looking at me with a look of triumph on their faces. I usually get them back on the next set of twisties. Regarding the bike test. My 18yr old son is waiting to sit his mod 2. He failed it at the start of November and the next available date was 11 December, so there must be a rush on up here due to the changes coming in at the end of January. He too, has the experience, and has been taking a weekly lesson at the local school, £60 for 2 hours, but did not take a lesson for just over a month prior to his 1st test date. He failed because he was speeding through a temp speed limit.....25mph in a 20. The examiner asked when was your last lesson. Anyway fingers crossed he gets though it on the 11th

I drive a Police Launch for a living, but occasionally I have to go out on one of these. or the smaller searider on some days you can be on them for up to 6 hours, and with the windchill factor and bouncing waves, it can lose the fun factor

I've never bothered, but a mate swears by Tesco Momentum, super unleaded. and uses nothing else in his bikes and van

Whats your time worth?
After 30 odd years of biking, I would advocate DIY, but if just starting out at least try and get a bloke (or gal, sorry sach) with some experience to watch and advise. You will pick up a load of experience from others. And as said always buy a manual, although in my experience Haynes is known as the book of fairy tales as there is so much wrong info in there it beggars belief at times. If you can afford it get a proper factory workshop manual, at least you know the guys that wrote it, built your bike.

I agree an intro is not necessary to receive help, however it is polite, and it has been asked for by the MODs of the forum, so why not give one, it does, as has been stated, only take a minute or two and will probably guarantee a lot more help.
