    My Auld Triumph

    Well I have spent the last few weeks designing a new loom and getting it quality assured from someone who knows waaaay much more than I do. Once I got the thumbs up I ordered all the wires, terminals and other sundries and they arrived a day or so ago. I also bought an automatic wire stripper and borrowed a crimping tool from my pal. I will be doing away with the rectifier and zener diode and upgrading to a rec/reg, but that hasn't arrived yet. I'll be making a start on my next set of rest days and a wee trial run with the first wire

  3. Likewise any takers on the Coil So today I fitted the new coil without success. I then pulled out the manual again and went through all relevant checks on the Ignition, neutral, clutch and side stand switches and all tested as they should have. I then rechecked all plugs and connectors. Again all seems well, so that leaves the Igniter...........and that's where it's going to stay. £180 plus VAT means almost £220 which I am loathe to fork out especially as we will be heading off to Tenerife soon so the wife and kids won't be too happy if I raid their spending money On a brighter note, all the wiring and terminals arrived to make up my new loom for the auld bike so if I get that sorted the new one can lie and rot
  4. John, the same has been happening to me, so maybe it's because we are so far from the exchange.........At least that's what BfekkingT tell me every time I complain about my slow broadband.....average speed 67Mb, I get 15.....
  5. I have already went through the 'non cost' items before I took the plunge Well I'm not so sure about that. Having spent a shed load of time and money on my auld Triumph, it decided to melt it's wiring loom, and just as I got my head around building a new loom (bike non standard electrics so had to design the loom), this shit happens to my newer bike...hohum, it could be worse, and I'm learning new skills so there's a bonus

Drewps, mine is a carbed model so no real electronics to read Blackie, it is 11 year old now...but reading the forums this was a common fault........that's if it is the sensor Here's a poll Crank sensor £45 Coil £57 Igniter £280 (although there is a non OEM out there for £180 with good write ups) Any guess which one it'll end up being
  11. Hey Alex, I had the same issue as John. I was aware the site would be down on Monday but my being kicked out on the sunday didn't register that downtime in my brain. The offline message only showed up on the monday. No issues no tho, so cheers
  12. to Jimmy no bikes! I have posted my woes regarding amy auld 59 Triumph and how the wiring loom melted....still ongoing. I spent time drawing a new harness (old one had no recognisable Triumph colours and the bike had so many electrical mods that no standard loom would fit) and have just had it quality assured by someone who knows electrics. Good to go says he, so I was in the process of drawing up a list of wires and terminals whilst my modern Triumph allowed me to still enjoy the great spell of weather we have been having up here. Unfortunately the other morning I left work and travelled about 3 miles when the engine just died on me. The engine would still crank over and plenty of life in the battery, but all sparks had made good their escape. Spent a bit of time going through the basics with no success, so for the 1st time since I was 18 I had to get recovered home. I have now spent the last few days scouring forums and manuals. The issue for me is my workshop manual does not give a troubleshooting section for the ignition system, rather they suggest replacing each part. Hopefully with help from online forums (forii?) I have narrowed it down to a crank position sensor, which is now on order so here's hoping thats that

    A 500 odd mile update The lid is maybe not as quiet as I first reported (probably comparing it to my auld one) but still very tolerable. It is still very comfortable and I should have bought one a long time ago Things are looking good for the full face version......if I get it at a good price
  16. I had planned to do my own "Long Way Round" and do Moscow then California in one day, but roadworks and problems with my support team meant I just did the one ? ? Just reading through the whole thread again. I am in Tenerife until 6th July. I'm back at work but off on Rest Days 13 - 16 so could possibly make it up to Oban on the Friday

  19. You can still ride it to and from a repair centre (which can be your house) but you 'must' go by a direct route. Once repaired, phone the shop and book it in and, again, you're covered

MOT is just a test of roadworthiness at the specific time of testing so if you present a bike with a month left and it fails, it is not roadworthy Back in the day we did all sorts including changing wheels (with good tyres) and quiet exhausts to get through it, thinking we were good for the year.....oh well, the folly or joys of yoof

  23. Your fix seems to have worked. All I get now is the small settings triangle in the bottom corner. Thanks again for your efforts bud.
  24. Hey, I resemble that remark. BTW I leave my doors open at night but that maybe because my alarm system is a 7st German Shepherd, recently changed from an 8st Rottie ? Anyway, I would never describe Gourock as Civilisation, more like the land that time forgot
