  1. So, relay arrived today. Connected it on and the bike roared into life but then I'd expect that as the battery has been on charge and there was probably a good bit of fuel left in the carbs. I did notice the pump running when the bike was running and I've never noticed that before. Not got time to get the multimeter on it so that's on for tomorrow after which I'll probably be driving around the block until it either cuts out or I'm confident that it'll go all day.
  2. Hey mate, sorry to hear your woes. Have you visually checked to see if you're getting a spark?
  3. I've not opened the multi plug as it 'appears' to be in good order. No green signs of corrosion and the connectors look in good condition too. There doesn't appear to be any sign of water ingress around the electrical componens at all (and yes I do ride in the rain ...). As I've got the side panels off the bike I'll just check over everything else but as the bike is in generally good condition and I've not had other problems I'm not expecting any horrors. I'll get back to you!
  4. Hey guys, according to the manual the main fuse or igntion fuse is all that's before the Main Relay unit. As the bike will run an start I'm guessing it's the fuel pump side of the relay that's gubbed, FYI I think its one of these www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-XJ600-XJ600N-XJ-600-N-DIVERSION-RELAY-UNIT-/290680818644?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item43aded4bd4 although, I have checked all the fuses and they look fine. As far as I can tell the relay block for the bike is getting power. I'm guessing that if the realy isn't totally gubbed it's on it's way, hence being able to drive it home after breaking down.
  5. p.s. Battery is holding a charge of 12.9 volts and it's not been used since I got the bike back from the breakdown.
  6. So, I just tested the fuel pump circuit and there appears to be no power going to the pump on turning the ignition key to on. I'm limited as I've only got one pair of hands to test the relay. I also connected the pump accross the battery directly (very briefly!) and the pump fired up fine, I wouldn't know what else to test that could interupt the power to the pump at ignition so I'm going to go with the relay and replace it for now. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!
  7. You're way ahead of me on bike knowledge and it sounds as though you know what needs to be done. A wee question Thouh regarding combining the two cylinders, won't the vacuum be sporadic?
  8. First of all guys, I think some of the replies to this thread have helped sort out the problem with my divvy so cheers! Re the XJ650 - can you check that the bike is definitely pumping fuel? i.e. a visible fuel filter with fuel in it? Also, faither told me about cranking the engine (without spark) to see if the end of each of the plugs is wet with fuel - an oldie but a goodie?
  9. I may have found the problem, well, only reading through Haynes initially but going to check it out first before buying a new battery. My Divvy has got an electric fuel pump. After reading Haynes it turns out I should hear it when the ignition switches on, just for a few seconds until the carbs are primed. This may explain why it'll run for a short period and then die, if the carbs aren't getting any fuel they'll just use up what was previously in the chambers until dry. Not sure how to explain the bike running again afterwards, maybe vacuum drawing the fuel through but unlikey, may just be down to a dodgey pump relay or wiring. It was actually the fuel/power problems XJ650 that got me on to thinking about this. Anyone any thoughts about this?
  10. I don't intend on highjacking this post but are the many differences between the xj650 and the XJ600n/s engine? It doesn't sound a million miles away from the problem I'm having. (See post in this section)
  11. Hi Mate, no charge light. Solid state reg /rectifier. Lucky if I'd even gone about 5 miles, probably less. It's almost the same place it happened just recently although I managed to keep the bike going the last time, probably as I had a bit of a down hill to aid me. I'm planning on going around the block a couple of times and see if it dies, measure the battery at this point and go from there. Also get into the cars and check the choke / throttle movement. It's due to go in for car balancing and a couple of new shims so if it's beyond me I'll get them to have a look.
  12. Hmm. I'm inclined to believe it's the battery as it needed regular charging last winter. It will sit for a week though, then start fine. One thing's for sure, I need to get myself a multi meter! Cheers folks. I'll let you know how I get on.
  13. Started fine a couple of times today. No probs. Not going to buy a new battery until I'm sure it really is gubbed. Will be Sunday before I can stuck into the bike.
  14. Sorry guys. Phone app seems to be a bit awkward. I'm on an xj600n-98. When I tried to start from the button the bike had a few goes at trying to turn over, sluggishly, so the battery wasn't totally gubbed but after a few more attempts I killed the battery and got the usual click.
  15. Hey guys, I was at motorway speed overtaking an HGV when the bike stuttered and I lost power, managed get over to the side of the road whilst down shifting try to coax the bike to the hard shoulder. I tried to start the bike and there wasn't much from the battery at all. Being not far from a layby I tried to bump start it over 1/4 of a mile, and nae joy. RAC turned up, gave the battery a hefty charge, attached it to the bike and it started no problem. Checked the battery once it was running and it appeared to be charging fine. All this happens within about 5 miles from home, after a cold start, the choke was off. Cheers folks!
  16. Just died about 5 miles from home whilst passing an HGV going up hill awesome fun! Fuel is fresh and the bike is used regularly. RAC came along and gave the battery a hefty charge. Started the bike checked the battery was charging and it was. RAC followed me home (about 5 miles) with no problems. Got home left it ticking over with lights etc on and still no problem. I thought it may have been the reg/ rect as it went about 2 years ago and I used a 2nd hand one but unlikely now as the battery is receiving a charge. Any thoughts?
  17. John Lydon on Question Time!
  18. If I were a witch, (although it may be more PC to be a warlock) I'd stick with my divvy 600 )
  19. Personally, I thought witches rode broomsticks ... How do you know they even like motorbikes?
  20. So, the Divvy will need a new rear tyre soon. I do a lot of motorway riding usually with a lot of gear. Currently got Battlax on the rear and was wondering if there's a tyre out there which is less prone to getting squared off whilst still being a good all rounder? I've no problem with getting the bike over on the corners, just that there aren't that many corners on my regular rides. I didn't have the bike when the rear tyre was new so I may just go for the same and see how I get on but was wondering what you folks thought. Any input appreciated...
  21. Hey Blackhat. I'm planning on leaving around 10. Once my chores are done , going down the A702 (a bit more direct for me) then cutting up on the 721, planning on being at the Esso station for about 10.30. Not in a major hurry to get down so won't be nailing it, may come back up the A71 to prolong the day though. Mattew, what Blackhat said. No probs with the breatherpipe (although I've not checked in a while ), you'll notice if it's back pressure, bike will be a bit sluggish. Any blue smoke on start up?
  22. Hey folks, Not sure if it's been mentioned on here but this : http://www.classicbikeshows.com/showindex.asp?showcode=GSS12 is on this weekend at the Lanark Agricultural Centre.. A bunch of us are going from from the Scottish Bikers Forum.. Looks like it might a nice day out, less than a tenner entry too with free parking! C.
  23. I'm self employed. Had a 200 mile bike trip, collected loads of flies, had a coffee and a cig half way and was home in time for pizza. Worked for 3 hours tonight then had a bottle of wine... post in The Bar..... Loved the custom in the shop mate, was it a local build?.
  24. Had to go down to our cottage near Annan today so what better excuse to take the bike. Fuelled up just outside Gorebridge and took the A7,(a bit crap with slow movers but was in no hurry) down to Longtown, across via Gretna to Eastriggs. Back up the M74 (chance to collect some flies) then over the A702 to Edinburgh & east lothian. Feckin Awesome day out. Now, I know the Divvy isn't everyone's cup of tea but in having no experience of another big bike I can't imagine what else you'd need? 60+ mpg, comfy seat and comfy on the road. I will admit that after an almost solid 200 miles my right knee was getting a bit annoyed, I found myself scooting back up the seat for extra leg length and I noticed I had moved my grip right to the ends of the bars... so.. maybe not perfect, but what is after 200 miles? Most of my journeys are 70ish miles so I don't normally notice these imperfections. I didn't see many folks out today but if you were out I hope I nodded or waved.. Happy riding folks and stay safe!
  25. Cheers folks, its a plastic fender on the front so not much of an issue there, I've looked for huggers for the Divvy 6 but can't seem to find one, any suggestions? It shall add it to the to do list which thankfully, is very short.
