Yamaha TT600 nightmare
Had a similar issue with my XT600 Frank..... Check the condition of your carb manifolds.....if they're cracked, they'll suck a fair amount of air through there & cause the backfiring you speak of. I was advised to reseal the mounting surfaces between the carb boots & the cylinder head with a thin coat of RTV gasket sealer.....as my boots were in great shape......this did cure the problem. Might be worth a try.... Best of Luck with 'em Oh, & BTW..... to the forum!

Cages are a necessary evil....UNfortunately! My biggest issue is trying NOT to drive my YamaHauler like I ride my bikes!

Cluthless changes.
Clutchless upshifts on shaft driven bikes proves to be quite fluid & smooth......not creating the dreaded typical chassis jacking from the shaft final drive. If they're done correctly.......it doesn't hurt a thing.

XJ600 starting problem
Used to have an XJ550 Seca with the same scenario...... Ended up being the starter circuit cut-off relay......located right behind the steering head, near the coils. Yanked the relay & ran a jumper wire across the connector to complete the circuit..... Worked great after that! HTH

Problems starting a hot bike
to the forum Freedom Fighter Used to have an '82 XJ550 Seca that would do the same thing when the Pilot Jets started to get dirty..... Pretty sure a good carb cleaning could cure that issue.
