mushy brake and rubbing parts.
Or is it just due for a master cylinder rebuild? This bike has been sitting for almost 10 years and the brake fluid was dark and cloudy.

mushy brake and rubbing parts.
So my buddy and I was bleeding out the brakes and we tightned the bolt for the brake but something is wrong it. When I pull the brake it is super mushy but the it is also really hard to turn the wheel when it is on the center stand. I believe its the brake pad rubbing against the caliper, but when testing the brake by running at speed it does not really brake at all. I am stumped guys, what did I do wrong?

sito mufflers question
nope I cannot weld, I am just looking for the exhaust tips because it just looks better than the original exhaust, I was just wondering if it made any significant improvement to the bike. Also see that "H" thing on the stock exhaust, isn't that a balancer/midpipe thing? or what is it called? am I calling it the wrong thing?

sito mufflers question
hey guys I am looking at sito mufflers because the complete exhaust system is too hard to find. Is the thing on the right a midpip/balancer for the stock headers? Also would I be gaining anything from these mufflers since the headers are stock? its suppose to be 218 dollars, is it a good price or do anyone of you guys know anywhere cheaper I can get them?

brake rod adjusting pin
sorry I highlighted the wrong part haha, it is part 14 on the picture I showed you. But the wing nut should be easily found in a hardware store right? Anyways I placed an order with mikesxs which is a 650 sight and bought some 54mm air filters since older 650's share the same carb I think. I also bought the pin that goes into the lever and it is expected to arrive at the 23rd. I will keep you guys posted if anyone is interested.

BERTS MEGA MALL SERVICE SUCKS
Ok so some of you guys know that I own a xs400 and I bought new tires for it. I was trying to find the lowest price and shopped around. Certain places asked 30 for each tire balance and mounting and installing bearings bushings etc in the wheel would cost me 60 per tire and plus the rear bearings would cost me 190 not including tax. Berts megmall beat that by 10 dollars. Now I sent the wheels at 01/07/2010 since I have seen my wheels and its going to cost me 210 dollar total because the front took them a lot "more time than expected" which amounted of 90 dollars. Now it is 01/23/10 and its still in the shop! They also found that the front bearing dust seal I gave them was the wrong diameter so they ordered the right one for 8.88 but a week later they told me they got it for the wrong side! How can a professional mechanic mistake which side of a part he has to order? I would understand it if it was some weekend mechanic but these are full time professional mechanics for God sakes. The dust seal cost a few dollars more too. My peeve about them is the extra cost and the extended amount of time it is taking me. What should I do? Should I sign the deal? How would I get my wheels back to the regular 180 price? help guys!

Fork Badge/Trim ... will it fit ...
I don't believe it serves any function other than look pretty, most of the cafe racers I see do not have it and its too flimsy to serve as a brace, its almost plastic like. I will give u pics of it within a few days, I have been busy working on the forks.

Fork Badge/Trim ... will it fit ...
I have one that I was about to throw away. It is stashed somewhere in the back since my bike is going to be a cafe racer. If you interested we can work a deal out.

xs400 wiring rats nest
Thanks I believe this is a ground now so technically I can cut the wire and tape it up to the inside of the bucket correct?
-
xs400 wiring rats nest
I hope someone can help me with this wiring nightmare. When I was removing the front end off of the bike I marked and labeled everything with numbers on bright green tape as you can see in the pictures. I ended up missing one since it was getting dark (few days before not in the pic) and when I try to figure out what goes where I cannot find the missing link. It is a black wiring that is coming from the left side and I believe it is for the blinkers/headlight. I have dotted it yellow, so where does this go? How can I organize this mess?

exhuast options for xs
holy crap I was thinking about another bike when I was making this thread. Sorry for the ignorance but I was thinking about this xs400 that someone heavily modded that had a V twin. But anyways about MY 4 stroke xs, it wouldn't be as troublesome to fab a 4 stroke exhuast than a 2 am I correct? what would happen if I put an expansion chamber on there? would it mess everything up?
-
exhuast options for xs
hmm I am a bit confused, would you care to educate me drewps? isn't the rd a 2 stroke?
-
exhuast options for xs
So I am thinking of getting a RD exhaust and modding the flanges and junk to fit on the xs. Will this work? I am afraid of clearance issues since the expansion chamber look huge.

XS400 taper bearings
drewpy my previous post was about the bearings itself not the bearing cups/races. But yea I put down what was packaged since each bearing had their own cup/race.

XS400 taper bearings
it should be out a little bit like this. ]http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v463/GoranXS650/XS650%20Tinnis%20Project/Steering%20Bearings/?action=view¤t=2006-01-07SteeringBearings06.jpg But I had a little trouble fitting everything in all together so instead of it fully seated like that, I tapped mine in a little further in order to get everything to fit snugly. Did you keep the rubber seal on the bottom? Also make sure you did not confuse the upper with the lower ones. The lower ones are a bit bigger so they should slide down fairly easy. The upper ones should stop at the threads. I read a bunch of threads from other forums that ruined the bearings because they went at it with a hammer and wrong bearings.

clubman bars problem
So how do you guys get your cables not to bunch up on aftermarket bars? I am putting clubmans on mine and the throttle and clutch cables are getting bunched up and I am afraid it will kink or something. What do you guys do.

XS400 taper bearings
I just replaced mine yesterday, did you fit the seal/cup/cone thing flush into the frame? I took a mallet at it and evenly tapped the thing in there.

new bronze bushing, new torque settings?
oh sorry its the swingarm bushings to my xs400. Currently it has no shocks and is mounted on some blocks, it has no left or right play which is good, but how stiff should the swing arm be? It takes some effort to push it up and down with one arm, like if you wanted to push someone.
-
new bronze bushing, new torque settings?
hey guys I just put new bronze bushings on there and it took a bit of encouragement and heat/cold to fit it in. Now I got everything all greased up nice and I torqued it to 47 lbs. How stiff should the swing arm play be? right now it acts like its frozen until I get it to about 20 lbs than it moves very freely. I believe the new bushings are a bit thicker in width than the old one, hence the lower torque settings. Any ideas?

xs400 2-1 exhaust system
I called the number and a dude name Lewis picked up. I asked for Will but he said no one that works there is named Will Schoeppe. Is he responsive with email? usually big ass companies are not.

xs400 2-1 exhaust system
Hey guys I am trying to find a 2-1 exhaust system for my 81 xs400, and I heard the mac exhaust quality was not really good. Does anyone know any other brands that I can look into?

xs400 cafe process
updates! I had to take the seat the seat in the house because it was drizzling while it was curing. So here are the pics, currently it has 1 layer of glass mat (sanded down of course) and I just put a layer of glass cloth today. I plan to put 1 more layer of each. I will prob sand it and trim it down tomorrow before I lay any more glass. Also as you can see there are indents where the shock and turn signals are. I plan on getting the small aftermarket oval type instead of sticking with those bulbous things.
