Watch out for oil. The front of the right hand side contains the carb and the oil pump, the back just everything held in place.
  2. That is starting to look like my garden Mervin. Cheers Preload. I will possibly be taking one for an MOT on Friday.
  3. C3 allow a bigger tolerance for expansion when the bearings get hot. The last thing you want is for the bearing to spin in the case. You may want to say hello in the new members section or have a read of this
  4. Be more worried about the ethanol in the fuel. It eats old rubber. I just use standard 95 unleaded in my bikes. Can't be ar5ed to search the country in the hope that I can find some super fuel.
  5. The higher the battery amp hours the more it will crank the engine. Any decent brand comparative battery will work.Yuasa are a good brand. There are lots of different types of battery, the normal one being lead acid. You can get fully sealed, gel, etc batteries too. Things to be careful of: Make sure the battery you buy is a direct comparison to the one you need - the position of the vent and even which side is + or - vary and so do battery sizes. If you buy a AGM or sealed type, make sure that your battery charger will work with it. Some need optimiser type chargers only. If you buy a lead acid make sure it comes with an acid pack, some don't.
  6. Light brown or quite white if really bad. Always remember that a lean 2 stroke will seize and probably put a hole in the piston. This normally means a full engine strip to get the metal out meaning a possible rebore and new crank bearings.
  7. They look sooty enough. Ideally you need to do a running check which would be to put a new plug in, run the bike for a couple of miles, when safe to do so run the bike at about 3/4 throttle for about a quarter of a mile and, again when safe, use the kill switch to turn the bike off and coast to a stop. At this point you need to whip the plug out (it will be very hot) and then check the plug colour. this will determine if the bike is running lean. It won't help any high reving which is a common symptom of an air leak. Things to check That the bike does have 2 stroke oil in it. The plug swap as above. Run the bike and spray wd40 around the carb rubbers where the air filter pipe and the carb meets and where the carb and engine meets. Listen for a change in engine noise and speed. Oil pump settings. Carb settings - are standard.

    1964 - YA6 Engine A7-102863--210890 Frame Y21-102883--210890 Bikes would have been registered between 1964 to 1966 in the main. 1968 - YA6M Engine A7-173001--245540 Frame A7-173001--245540
  9. Then it sounds like a crank seal (probably left one) is shot. This will allow air into the system which will make the bike run lean (too much air to fuel ratio) and cause the bike to seize. This fits with what you said earlier. Take your spark plug out and post up a picture. it should be a dark brown/chocolate colour. if it is pale brown or whiteish then this also points to a lean mixture.
  10. With the information I have I would have to agree with Cynic. You can't assume anything. YOU need to check things like oils, fuel and tyre pressures. A 2 stroke burns oil to run so it needs to be topped up. This is different to 4 stroke bikes.
  11. If it sounded strange at stationary then this points to a possible engine or gearbox issue. I am presuming there was 2 stroke oil in the bike? How mechanically minded are you ?

In the uk we can find out if the bike has ever been registered here but your's will be different. I will put up some details on frame and engine numbers when I get home from work. I would guess yours is an import, the same as mine. Again, I am not sure what you would need to do to register it in Ireland, here it is a bit of a pain, especially if you dont have any import papers to show import duty and VAT has been paid. It may be best to find out what your process is to register it before you do much more with it.

Please don't let me put you off, What I was trying to say is that old bikes can be money pits and being a 2 stroke you really need to have the engine apart. There are lots of parts on fleabay so I doubt that parts would sell very easily but you should be able to sell it on as a project should you think that a different bike would be easier to work on. The only part that seems to be in short supply are the exhausts in very good condition. If you got given it then you have lost nothing. Parts are cheap to pick up and, if fixed, it will make an excellent run about. I have never seen another one in the UK and I am sure they are just as scarce in Eire.
  14. 5 litres of fuel at 40:1 is 125 millilitres per tank, as per Drewps' answer 5 litres of fuel at 33:1 is 151 millilitres per tank,
  15. Moved to the workshop section as it is a workshop question. Simples.
  16. 33:1 or 40:1 I would guess Kev. Calculator LINKY
  17. Hi and welcome to the forum. As well as bike lovers there are a few guitar lovers here too.
  18. I only used a bike to commute on twice this week. I did come home from work and then go out for a ride so only 3 day's usage. It's just miserable out.
  19. I am glad you have it running and it doesn't seem to be something expensive. It does seem like you have done some "preventative" maintenance as you have got this sorted. Even if the battery optimiser said that all is good, I would seriously think of changing the battery in the near future. Not sure when the air filter was changed so add that to your list. I have an Optimate 4 charger/optimiser and it is very good. You can get a set of "tails" that permanently connect to the battery and you can just plug the optimiser into that making battery maintenance very easy. You can also plug in a aux socket which allows charging of phones, satnavs etc while riding the bike.
  20. Not sure you mean "suspension". Have a look here LINKY
  21. Don't have the car battery running, hook up the leads and then try and start the bike. Don't run the bike without a battery - if just connected to the car battery. We are starting to need a list now, Is the plug wet when trying to start?
  22. You can change the engine number on the V5 and send it back to the DVLA for a new V5. Many reasons for engine changes so unless you paid top money for it I wouldn't worry.
