Hi and welcome. There are still a lot of these around at the moment. Most in the same condition as your by the sound of it. I would get the angle grinder out.

I don't have any comments on the bikes but reading this thread, boy do I feel short!!!!!!!! I did many years commuting in London and it isn't too bad once you get used to it. I do miss the traffic light races. Welcome to the forum.

Help / Advice needed please
As Cynic says. The Haynes manual normally has colour pictures of what a plug should look like if it is OK. Check you have the right plug spec in there. It should have a number on it and some run hotter or colder. Is the fuel pipe standard as hot engines can evaporate petrol causing starvation, The old chestnut of an air lock. when the bike cuts out undo the petrol cap and see if there is a suction noise. Check the float height in the carb and make sure that the float is moving freely.

to buy or not to buy???
So buy it for £350, spend £100 and then sell for £450. So a not for profit project? Someone where I work has one of about the same age. They are fabulous bikes and will, normally, only be beaten by age. A very good, versatile bike. I don't think you could spend as little as £100 unless you bodge the tyre and that would not be good. I would say buy it and spend if you want to keep it or leave it and find someone who would like to buy it and keep it to get them mobile again or a project. Try and keep it away from the breakers, it would be such a shame

125cc: Dragstar or Shadow?
I would go the bigger bike route myself and get it over and done with. You mention "my EU home country" but you didn't fill in your profile details so it is difficult to gauge any problems you might have. I would tend to lean into the corner . There is a lot of video stuff on video sites which should help and add to the motivation (if you need any more). I remember not sleeping the night before I picked my first bike up and not sleeping after the first night of riding due to excitement. Mind you I brought the bike without having ridden one although I did have a full car licence. No pre test CBT's then. Just buy a bike up to 250cc, get on it and learn to ride as you go.

TDM900 front wheel
+1 I am a big fan of German Evilbay. Some great bargains there. Just make sure you can pay by Paypal or your UK bank will probably rip you off with charges. I guess it pays for the Chairman's prostitute fund so at least it is not squandered.

TW 125 non starter
I would say that there is a short in the ignition switch, probably caused by the attempted theft. Inside the ignition switch there will be several contacts and at least one of these is either not working or is being shorted out at the wire stage. Often these can be intermittent and can be affected by turning the bars - which cases the short or connection. Change the ignition and any damaged wires as, even if the bike does start, you could have the bike cut out when you need it most.

Just bought a new bike
Have a search on the forum and look through the Yamaha custom threads which is a little lower than this section on the home page. Always good that you rate the Virago 125 as a superbike . You may get a better response is you post a "hello" in the noob section, but welcome anyway.

XS 750 special Tachometer Cable
You have the right area on the engine. What someone has done has made a blanking cap from an old clutch end cap. This is done as they will weep oil and let in water if left open. You need to remove (unscrew) the knurled part on the engine that you are pointing to and screw the new cable to it. Unfortunately the reason people tend to do this is that the rev counter or the drive gear had broken. I would undue the knurled cap. start the engine and look into the exposed area. There should be a part inside that spins. If it does then the drive gear on the engine is fine. Turn off the engine and connect the new cable to both the engine and the rev counter. Make sure to route it properly so it does not snag. start the bike up and the rev counter should be working. If not then the rev counter itself is broken so you will need to look for a new one. If the engine drive is not working you may be able to get the parts to fix this by looking HERE LINKY.

radiator cap
The rad cap should only let anything out if the pressure gets too high. you may have an air lock. Never try to take the cap off when, or soon after, the bike has been run as you well seriously hurt yourself.

It could happen to anyone!
You can't beat a good, phallic, tornado to ride through, OG I have just been to Tescos and got the only type of jump leads they had, super duper heavy duty. Difficult to clap to the terminals, but I managed to jump it off the car. Blew a main fuse in the process (replaced) and have just reconnected the Optimate so hopefully it will be charged just in time for the thunder clouds tomorrow.

My heated grips are direct to the battery. I haven't been arsed to put a relay into the ignition. At the moment I have taken the fuse out so they can't be switched on. I doubt if I will get around to it.
