1974 dt250a
Thanks Cynic that's pretty much where I'm at with it too. I've been thinking about replacing all the external seals anyway as it would suck water into the case whenever I went anywhere near anything wet. I sent off a list to Mr bike shop yesterday and am just waiting to see the availability and prices..... Any other suggestions while it's all in little pieces?

1974 dt250a
Yes, I'll need to put my hand up for the oil being low me thunks. Hadn't ridden it for a while etc etc. Schoolboy error. Bit of rusty looking grime around so I'm happy to get in there anyway. More soon...

1974 dt250a
Tracked down the vibration to the 4th gear cog being dry and not spinning freely on the drive axle. Cleaned up ok and with some oil spins nicely and doesn't appear to be damaged at all. Good time to check inside the crankcase as it had been sitting for a while with water in the oil before I got it. Bearings feel fine so will probably replace some seals if I can get them. Now to take a deep breath and fit everything back in......

1974 dt250a
OK, Clutch basket is off. In neutral I can turn the main axle and the vibration and dodgy bearing feels like it's on the end of that inside the case. When it vibrates, it will start turning the drive axle a bit because of the vibration/friction. I can hold the drive shaft/sprocket, isolating it back to the main axle. There's a small hole on the side of the case where I can see inside a bit and the gears at the end of the shaft but not quite the offending bearing. I had a look on the parts diagram and can see a small bearing there which seems to be in the spot. Next step I'm thinking is to split the case to get at it.........?

1974 dt250a
Yep thanks for that, I'll have a look tomorrow and see how far I get. I was thinking it's like a vibration in the bearing that hasn't got oil. You're right in that it's a bit wierd in that I can get it to make noise by turning the drive sprocket when in neutral and engine off but also that it is happens when the engine's running and in neutral and stationary. Good thing I'm on leave this week and can have some quality un-interupted tinkering time with the kids at school and the wife at work. Anyways, will post again when I know more....

1974 dt250a
Hi all, While I was out last week, the bike started making a bit of a racket with what sounded like a bearing playing up in the bottom end. I'm pretty sure it's at the back on the left, behind the drive sprocket. It will make the noise with the engine turning over in neutral. I've got the engine out and can get it to make the noise (sometimes) by turning the drive sprocket. I'm thinking I'm headed for getting the crankcase apart but would appreciate any words of advice before I start. Thanks in advance, Gordo

AG 175 1974/75
HI all, Here's a few pics of the new wheels I picked up a couple of months ago for $150. I figure good value if it runs and it' less than $1 per CC. I need to fix the slipping clutch and put the air filters back in place as it idles all over the place. It will at least start. I'll eventully get around to set the timing so if anyone wants to take a punt on the numbers on that please let me know. I was thinking of trying the points setting of a DT 175a and see how that goes. Gordo

Replacing Spokes
Thanks for that. I'll have a look. Na, it's an AG 175 which is pretty similar to a DT. Mostly limited to Australia as far as I know. I'm pretty sure it's a '74 but the plate has all the numbers rubbed off and I haven't been able to ID it from the engine number. Pretty much looks like a bit of a scrambler with front and rear racks, bash plate and drop guards around the engine. Generally the design is a lot sturdier than a DT (like it's got two air filters) for chasing sheep around the paddocks I guess. I'll put some photos up soon...... Gordo

Replacing Spokes
Heya, Happy Easter/Spring. I've kind of got an answer to my own question but maybe something useful for someone else in the process....... I've been looking for replacement spokes for a '74 ag 175 (pretty much the same as a DT) and for some reason I've found it difficult to get ones that are original or close to it. Is it just me? I was thinking I could just go into a bike shop and get them but as many would know, bikes from 1974 don't exist for most shops and spokes have changed a bit. I did some reasearch on having some made as well as getting a wheel/bike for spares but I wouldn't be able to get that through my Minister of Home Affairs and Finance. I did eventually find some that did the job so I'm fixed even if they're not 100% the same. Anyone with any advice on that I'd be happy to hear it. Anyways, I also came across what looks like a bargain on Fleabay at $9.30US for a set of 18 outside spokes and nipples. It's listed as rear wheel spokes for '74 DT125/175 but at 7 1/4 inch long they must be for a 19inch front (which I didn't need), So anyone looking for a set of front wheel spokes on a DT175/125 1970ish have a look under "NOS yamaha spokes" in the US and you'll find it. Even with postage it looked pretty good and I hope that someone can use it. Gordo

rectirier?
My bet is the bulbs are blowing because the voltage is too high. Main things to check are that the battery is ok and check the voltage with the engine running (at higher revs too). If it's high and the battery/wiring is ok I'd be looking at the rectifier as you suspect. Looks to be a common problem on these bikes and I had the same thing happen a couple of weeks ago on the way to work in the dark. I'm waiting on a rectifier as I'm pretty sure everything else is ok. On the end of that, anyone know if a rectifier can be tested with a multi-meter? Hope that helps. Gordo

stolen dt 125
The frame and engine serial numbers can tell you the build year. There's some websites that will have that info. Might be a compliance plate on the frame somewhere too that might have that info. Otherwise you can look through DT photos on the web until you find what year it is or post a photo here and I'm sure people will be able to tell you what it is.

Early DT seat cover??
A while ago I saw an EBay seller from Canada that had them. They looked pretty good and original design from what I could tell. There was one in the US too but the postage from there to AUS is ridiculous and not worth it. In the end I got one made locally as a temporary measure and might never get around to getting another one. Searching EBay might turn up something if people are still making them Gordo

where to get proper decals
Try reproduction decals. They might have what you need. They are easily contactable by email for an enquiry at least which is the limit of my experience with them. They didn't have exactly what my tank stripes looked lke but were helpful anyway

1974 DT 175
Last time I was in the bike shop asking about a coil the only one they had for my bike (dt250a) was a 6v/12v one as an aftermarket replacement. Don't know anything about them though sorry but it sounded like if mine ever needs replacing that's the only option I've got...........

Newbe here. So I have this problem, what next?
As you've got the case apart, you could take it to a welder who should be able to tell you if they can do it or not. Some welders are magicians I reckon so hopefully you can that sorted. Gordo

What's the problem with taking bikes to the mechanics?
Hi, It's all about choice isn't it? For my bike, I've really enjoyed stripping it down and getting it going myself. It was the process more than having a bike that works. Nothing against bike shops, but I can honestly say that it's never occured to me to go there first. My kids like it too and I'm stoked that both my daughter and son just loooove to get hold of the spanners and help. They're learning about stuff as well. Can't buy that.. Riding is only one part of the fun that I've had in getting back into biking. If I wasn't spending time doing that, I would be doing something else in the shed. Haven't used much tape on my bikes but I have been known to use cable ties, fencing wire and steel coke cans on occassions. As long as it's not a safety issue I think that's funny too. Gordo

Am I turning into a grumpy old bast...rd
Hi again, Been watching the forum for a while now and thinking that I probably just started by asking a question relating to the bunch of bolts that I had in the garage. I'm not really bothered by that approach myself but sorry if that's the case. Can't remember. Either way it's been really good in that my bike is on the road and in no small part due to the questions, answers and contributions to this forum. Over time you get to see a little of people's personality and pick up on other stuff that makes this quite a social forum and that's been great too. I have to think a bit about developing social connections through the computer (I'm not into Twitface etc.) but it's great to be able to connect to a few people all over the world who have a common interest. Being whatever the hell generation I am, I would much rather prefer to say hi over a beer, cup of tea, whatever. Can't say that there are many oppportunities to do that being in Australia but look forward to reading about when some of you get together. That will have to do until I can manage a visit sometime or if someone turns up with a trail bike close to where I live. Hope you're enjoying the summer and ride safe........ Gordo
