If its basic maintenance youre gonna be doing then a basic toolkit to start with is all youll need Centre stand/paddock stand Set of allen keys Youyve already got the socket set Ball pein hammer, no bigger than 1lb Plastic mallet Set of screwdrivers Torque wrench (watch for Lidl and Aldi, they occaisionnly have em in) As you get more proficient and take on more advanced maintenance Multi meter Pin punches and then youll find that youll be buying tools specific to a task, like balancers for throttle body setting etc etc then in 30 years years time, youll end up like me, wondering why the hell youve got so much stuff you only use once in a blue moon. Cant resist the gravitational pull of a tool stall
  4. Finished the job this afternoon. Wasn't easy though. Had a good look and decided it could be done without removing the rear wheel. Hugger/ panels removed for access, bike on centre stand, rear wheel packed up to stop it dropping. Top shock mountin bolt came out easy, bottom mounting bolt came out easy too. Haynes says "pull out the spacer". No chance, stuck in solid. No room to get anything on it to pull or knock it through. Ended up grinding a small groove in the visible bit with a dremmel, so I could get a small sharp chisel in the groove and tap it out from the left side. Still no good though. Soaked it in Plusgas for a couple of days, interspersed with red heating a bolt and shoving into the bore of the spacer to trasnfer some heat into it. It finally started to shift last night, eventually coming out unharmed. Then couldnt unscrew the yoke from the piston shaft. Finished up hacksawing through it, level with the end of the threaded shaft, then hacksawing down its length, level with the top of the thread, on two sides. A gentle tap, and it popped of like cracking open a walnut, shaft threads unmarked. Fitted the replacement yoke, added a drop of threadlocker, cleaned the shock up, ready to refit. Everything greased and copa slipped up, lined up the unit, slipped it in. Covers etc all back on, wheeled it of the platform, cocked mi leg over easy without kicking the handrail, now get both feet almost flat on the floor, so the jobs a good un. Centre and side stands still function as they should, will test ride in the morning

  6. I sorted out a complete set of imperial allen keys to save, then I skipped the rest. Looks like you can buy sets for as much as postage would have costed. Some more trawling turned up a lovely internal micrometer set from 0 to 6 inch in a nice red case that Id forgotten I had In the end, I put it all back ( minus the keys), just couldnt get rid
  7. Had a bit of a clean up today in the garage. Why do we keep so much stuff? I turned up in excess of 200 allen keys, metric and imperial, micrometers, thread gauges, imperial taps and reamers, v blocks, scribing blocks etc etc. Ive not used any of em for donkeys, Im inclined to tip em Any comments?

  11. Rode the newest addition to the fleet (the FZ6 fazer) up to Ashbourne, first longish ride, to get the feel for the bike. Went ok, only negatives so far are seat height shade to tall (will fit lowering mount) and poor view in the mirrors (need to fit extenders) Lovely day for riding, not too hot or too cool. Roll on a long, warm, dry summer

Id like to lower the rear end so that I can get more foot on the deck, this has turned up while searching http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-FZ6-Fazer-S2-RJ14-2009-MFW-Lowering-Kit-Drop-35mm-/130768980805 I reckon it replaces a longer link on the shock, would I need to lower the front end too ? Any advice greatly appreciated Thanks
  15. youre right, but if I was buying a bike and the owner had receipts to prove servicing was done, Id consider that the same as a dealers stamp

  18. Left handed taps arent always easy to get hold off and costly. Using an easi out is the same thing but cheaper and easier
  19. Maybe not. Like Blackhat says, if you can get something behind the bolt head to lever while unscrewing.it might just be the screw thats stripped, if youre lucky.
  20. Always eliminate the cheapest and easiest options first. Carb work is not the easiest stuff to undertake for a beginner
