  1. 1TE/1TA engines are 1986 and 1987 To simplify, the reason you cant put more than 2 to 3 gallons in is because there's too much still in the tank, ie the level at which it needs to switch to reserve is too high. Hence my previous comment regarding premature cutoff. The switching level looks to me like it needs to be lower, this would allow you to run longer before switching to reserve. You'e filling up with the tank still half full.
  2. Its unlikely that you'll struggle for parts for an xv535, they sold by the boatload in the late 80s and well into the 90s, good late models hold their price well. Model was only discontinued because of emissions regs, and replaced by the Dragstar range. The Dragstar 650 aint rare, plenty for sale and they hold their value
  3. Looks like a standard Virago tank ok, that holds 4.4 US gallons. Whats the thing sticking out from under the tank, just in front of the petcock? I've a feeling that the bike is not set up right. You say theres no control panel? I can see that theres no tacho, and the low fuel light would have been mounted on the tacho unit. I'm no electrical expert, but could the wiring circuit for the low fuel level (which I assume is still there and connected up somewhere) be connected up in such a fashion that it is causing premature cutoff? That might explain why you're only able to put less than 3 gallons in the tank, cos theres more fuel in than there normally would be. I'm only guessing here. Nice bike
  4. Fill it up the bottom of the neck tube Reset odometer to zero Ride bike normally When you get to around 70 to 75 miles, open the tank and have a look in (take the cigarette out of your mouth), you SHOULD still see plenty of fuel over the hump Take a photo of the bike/tank and post it on here. Popping tends to happen on the overun ie when you let off the throttle
  5. XV1100 tank range155 miles tank capacity 4.4 US gallons should average 40 to 50 mpg
  6. Tried chrome spray before, always been disappointed with the finished result. Tends to be duller than chrome, more like the finish of an old silver teapot, or the colour of the forks on my old dragstar
  7. Shame. In Rock was the first LP I ever bought (1970), followed by every other one they released in the 70s, and subsequently hundreds of others. Spent the seventies and early eighties at Town Halls/University halls/clubs/pubs/venues the length of the country watching bands, some famous and some not so. Proper musicians all who could write too, none of this miming to soundtracks shite, and chatting after the gig in the dressing rooms. Still got all the vinyl, and deaf as a post. Great, great fun, wonderful times, and that guy and his mates were the catalyst.
  8. Are you using the choke? Are the plugs sparking? Spark plug caps on properly? Getting fuel in the combustion chamber? Side stand switch working properly?

    virago 750

    Only 3 Its a V twin Twin means 2
  10. Are there nuts underneath the fairing? Are the nuts spinning round too? If so, get a socket on them If the hex socket on the screw is rounded, you can sometimes get away with it by tapping a torx bit into the hex socket. Use the size which cuts its way in when you tap it into the socket. Failing that, it looks like you should be able to drill off the 2 screw heads to allow the panels to be removed. Mask up your panels first. You dont need a drill the size of the screw head, just a touch bigger than the screw diameter. Then, as previously advised, youll have to drill out the threaded parts carefully. Copper grease all replacement fasteners
  11. Youve got to avoid snapping bolts/screws etc, as you cant always get a drill in due to restricted access. As above, a good quality release oil rather then WD40, careful application of heat, patience, try turning both directions, sometimes the action of tightening breaks the bond, try to avoid extension bars as youre likely to shear the bolt/screw. If the bolt is just turning round in the hole (stripped thread)you need to pull as well as turn. Stripped nuts/holes will require helicoiling Always use the correct sized spanner/socket, not an adjustable (nut rounder)
  12. Probably more marketable than calling it Smegma
  13. Before stripping out the carb, try running some carb cleaner through the fuel system
  14. More than one Forum Can't you remember your schoolboy Latin
  15. You had to swoop around the cone curved section, accelerate out of it to hit a minimum speed of 32mph (I think, cant remember now), then through the speed trap whilst swerving off line and through 2 cones set in line, pulling up between 2 more cones in a controlled stop. Over 400 accidents in 2 years at the test centres carrying out this manouvre (again, I think thats the right figure)
  16. Best advice I can offer is pop into a training school near you, the test appears to be changing on a monthly basis at the moment, I'm not sure what it consists of now, but I do believe that the swerve manouvre has now been dropped from it.
  17. My advice? Buy a good one that you can test ride or see ridden, preferably with less than 20k on the clock and with some service history. If its your first bike, take someone along with you with some experience. If you remove the stock exhausts, you may have to start fiddling and faffing with the carburetor, to maintain the correct mixture of fuel and air. Hassle, and detracts from the enjoyment of riding your first bike Personally, I thought that the stock pipes sounded superior to any aftermarket pipes that I heard, with that lovely "doof doof doof doof". The aftermarket pipes all sounded louder, but much more harsh, and still sounded like a 125. Look after it, gain road experience on it, take your test, get something bigger, and pass the dragstar onto someone else to do the same. If you look after it, without to many "mods", you'll likely to get your money back when you sell it on as good ones hold their value and they are sought after. Good luck with your search
  18. as we have been asked to rate/comment at the end of the film: 0 out of 100 no regard for personal safety or that of other road users bad example all round nothing personal, take care
  19. Just a thought Kelum, what condition are your chain and sprockets in? I suspect that the climate and roads in Sri Lanka requires regular chain maintenance. Is the chain too stretched, is there plenty of meat left on the sprocket teeth, is the chain tension set as per the owners manual?
  20. One flew past me on the way to work this morning, in kwak green. Looked really smart. Good value for money too, new ones Enjoy
  21. Not that small, everyones in too much of a hurry these days. Chill and relax
  22. As suspected, carb trouble then. 10.2 bucks for 9 hours labour I dont know how much a buck (I said buck) is, but it sounds like remarkably good value
