XV535 Fuel Pump
I'm not 100%-but apart from that emm, not sure of your bike, however it sounds like a diaphragm pump, does it sound like a Thuk Thuk Thuk Thuk ? or,, a Thak Thak Thak Thak ? go out and have a listen then come back in and tell us which one yep sounds like its OK, you'd be better checking with a fellow owner on this-the diaphragm may be 'holed' and causing this noise-or maybe its supposed to sound like that ?

k+n filter/ down gearing
I would have thought the K&N filter experience would have taught you something, just leave it be and enjoy, bike manaufacturers dont spend 1 Million dollars in research and development for you to spend £40 to 'soup it up'

Tyres, Compounds and stuff?
Have a look at Renntecs stuff Foamy-reasonably priced and well made, here's some engine bars in their 'clearance section', they have rear racks that have bars to attach panniers to http://www.renntec.co.uk/product1057.html

Tyres, Compounds and stuff?
Could this be the tyre 'tracking' into the 'transition strips' on the road?, if there are a lot of patches there then its probably whats happening and lots of mimi-cambers, the XJ club have tried out lots of tyres and combinations, there probably are tyres out there that perform as good or better than the BT45- I dont have the money to experiment so I stick with them
