Not quite true. Only with an aftermarket exhaust. I have converted many air filters on XJ12s and other Yams of that era to cones without an issue. With an OE exhaust, all it requires is careful setting up.

Dear Mr Cage Driver, I was riding pillion, minding my own business when you came so close to us, I almost swallowed my tongue whole. I was not the least bit impressed by your aggressive manner or your flashing lights. You followed us for several miles through town, cutting up other cages to keep with us and going through red lights. I hope you realise that was very naughty of you. We came to an NSL zone and left you for dead, rapidly getting up to the speed limit within a couple of seconds. Again, you zoom up behind us getting dangerously close, your lights flashing in our mirrors. If we had to stop quickly, I have no doubt in my mind that I would have been sitting in your lap. I watch you using your mobile phone while tailgating us. Do you realise what would have happened if a child had run out in front of us? We finally stop at a set of traffic lights and you get out, steam coming from your ears - you're not in a good mood. Next time Mr Cage Driver, please drive a marked squad car so we can recognise you :lol: :lol: :lol:

With an OE exhaust system, you shouldn't need to re-jet the carbs. You will, obviously, need to adjust mixtures, etc. when you re-build. I presume by pods, you mean individual cone filters such as K&N? TBH, cheap unbranded ones (of the K&N red colour) will do the same job - they are all made in the same place in China anyway, just made under liscence. I would recommend fitting an air box if you can source one, then use an aftermarket panel filter. Using cones can offer set up difficulties to the less experienced if you have unbalanced compression as each carb will have to be set up more precisely. If you do wish to work on carbs, one essential piece of kit I would really recommend is a set of vacuum gauges - you cannot set carbs up reliably without them.

Can you not use a 16" wheel from another model of bike? Doesn't have to be Yamaha as long as the spindle is the same size.

I presume your problem is that the bike will not start? Have you checked for a spark?

Insurance won't be much different. You can insure any bike over 10 years old as 'classic' now with a lot of insurers.

You may have the 2009 colour scheme fairings, but the bike will be a 2008 model underneath. The 2009 model is not going to be available in the UK until mid-January. Sorry guys.

It's all about personal preference matey. Just because it didn't agree with me, there's no reason for you to dismiss it completely.

Hiya peeps Just thought I would say hello as it seemed rude not to Anyway, I have filled in my 'about me' page so I am not going to bother writing it all out again. I have been a Yamaha nut ever since I was old enough to reach the bike mags on the shelf. The first bike I saw in a magazine was the newly released Yamaha FZ750 and I have been hooked ever since My first ever bike was a Yamaha FZR400RR at 14. Purely car park and industrial estate riding, I never managed to fully appreciate the bike I bought a brand new R1 in 1998 (certified as number 137 off the production line), but I was only ever a passenger I've had about 30 different bikes in the last ten years including a 1999 Thundercat from brand new until it's theft last Christmas, a 2005 R6, an FZR600, and several Kawasakis plus my only Honda - a 2003 CBR600RR, the worst bike I have ever ridden. After my insurance payout on the Thundercat, I ended up seeing a 1996 Thunderace, completely mint, that I paid £800 for (the guy in the garage owed me a huge favour). It is by far the best all round road bike I have come across and I can see me replacing it with another one if I can't afford an FJR for mile munching in comfort.
