yea! A lot to look at, I see you did your own silver painting. did you use cans? Looks like powder coating on the frame and PJ1 satin on the engine cases? can't beat wire wheels on a bike, can't belive that they were seen as a cheap wheel a few years back. All you got to do is choose which to ride next Merv!!, when the sun makes an appearance!!
  2. not one for words? jeez that's an essay
  3. it will not only flood the engine but do damage to the bore as it washes the oil away
  4. also soften them up a bit with a hairdryer as they harden with age. ( i bit ike me really)
  5. yep that's electronic ignition, still works on the same principle but its the box which gets the coils to fire. make sure its earthed properly undo bolts clean and retighten to make sure (a dab of copper grease whould help).

about 3 haggis and 4 Sporron's...... I think they worked out the same price as ebay and the same supplier. I asked a similar question on the classic bike forum and the suppliers post on there. go onto classicbike.co.uk and do a search for xs400 and you'l see drewpy everywhere and a thread on exhausts.
  8. Is the chrome good on the fenders as these are sought after. there's plenty of after market fibreglass fenders out there.
  9. float levels wrong and flooding the carb
  10. Thanks for those, I went back over the woodhead pass and managed to stay behind a micra at 50mph, then it bloody sped up out of my comfort zone, so I had to slow down again!!. Still it was an "interesting" journey to say the least! 6th july is uttoxetor VJMC show and end july is Lotherton hall where I hope to meet XS360!? we could always arrange a meet up to ride up/down to the shows if you're up for it?
  11. methinks its one of those urban ledgends!!

I got the '78 dealer update from 360 to 400 and all was mentioned different was the cc's and chamfered casing, lever gaiters. no mention of silencers so i assume they would fit. you won't find any left silencers, i looked for years and managed to get the only one in the country/world.

can i send my questions on the back of a stamp?
  14. If they are 34mm I think that the xs triples have the same type as I know they are the same for xs400's. you will need to rejet for the cc's drewpy
  15. are you on contacts?

are you on cdi or contacts? do a search for online manual as we had some available
  19. red/white wire which is shared is 12v positive the other wires grey and orange are from the contacts/CDI and earth out then open circuit to produce a spark at the plugs, make sure they are the right way round!! check the condensor if you have contacts by opening the contact cover and looking for sparking over the contacts (there should'nt be any)
  20. 1. voltage regulator -mentioned in previous posts so do a search 2. mine has a false neutral 5th to 6th sometimes - try adjusting your chain 20mm slack at tightest spot
  21. Hey, had a great time today at Barnsley despite the gales force winds over woodhead pass. Met up with Oldgit and hung out together (we even shared a meal AHHH) apart from the wind, the weather was great and I got to go on the race track to mix it with the rd's, cb750's and other kit from the 70's. never been to a show where you can "parade" your bike on a track!..... Bollocks, just screwed the bugger at every opportunity even got my tyres squeeling after the back staight and ground my foot pegs!! GT550 chasing me, he ground out most of his main stand on his recently restored machine oops! CB250 pottering in front better lean angle there!! bloody dust gave me the jeebies at first whoooo hoooo!! close up of me, red-lining in 2nd gear cheers to "Oldgitonabike" for taking the piccies
  22. no problem mate, just don't understand the logic in it, all oils will deteriorate/rub/wash off in time and expose the metal underneath. If I apply wd40 would i have a permenate cloud following me as its attracted to the fluid? I personnaly use ACF50
  23. wd40 and diesel are oils therfore do not "attract" water!! both are light oils and work the same way, should not need to blow them out as they will burn or are sent through the exhaust, therefore coating the inside of your expensive silensers stopping them rotting from the inside!!

try here http://www.yamahaspares.uk.com/XS250.html know it says 250 but there is a new 400 barrel there!!
  25. I'll be going, hope the weather is like today!! can we give it some on the track or is it a potter behind some bsa?
